Yes. Way too many factors go into it.
And what's good to one person might be bad to another.
It's too subjective.

Re: good neighborhood??

I don’t think you can really judge a neighborhood by a google search.

Yea, you can find school ratings. You can see the median age in the area as well (people with small children like to live where other new families are) but unless you spend time in the area, go to the local stores (clean, friendly staff, etc) you really don’t know.

When we chose our town, we knew a few people who grew up here, schools are good and the houses on a lot of blocks looked well cared for. But I spent time in the area (only lived 2 towns away so it was easy) while we were looking and saw a lot of kids at the local parks, families walking their dogs with strollers stopping to talk to neighbors, the stores were clean and people seemed friendly enough. As you live somewhere, you learn the good and the bad. I’m glad we live here because my block is exceptionally wonderful and we got very very lucky. But like every town there’s the crap, car break ins, drugs, etc. I don’t have to deal w the mom/school drama but hear about it often.

good neighborhood??

When I was looking to move we looked at the crime maps for the neighborhoods we were interested in moving into- i then drove around to get a feeling for the layout, etc.
we did a lot of research and worked with a very knowledgeably realtor.

Re: good neighborhood??

I think first you have to figure out what you are looking for in a neighborhood.

Some of the things you can look at depending on what is important to you are crime, types of crime, median income, school ratings, education levels of population that resides there, ages of population, percentage of kids receiving free/reduced lunch, unemployment levels (obviously before this crisis), diversity, number of schools in district, spending per student, how the school district ranks in the state, whether they have a library, colleges/universities in the area....

all of these factors can give useful information depending on what you are looking for. What's a plus for someone is a minus for someone else.

Yeah I would take a look at the crime rate and the types of crimes that are committed. If you don't have kids going to the schools I wouldn't let that play as much of a role than if I did. You don't want the schools to be really bad for resale purposes but you will probably get a better deal in a mediocre school district that is still in a great area.

This is what my ILs did when they moved after becoming empty nesters. The moved to a mediocre district with low taxes.
