I'm curious what the rules are going to be regarding visiting people when Phase 1 begins. My mother really wants us all over for Mother's Day. I'm thinking not actual Mother's Day since that's before 5/15, but the weekend after. If they start opening businesses on 5/16, could we then have family get-togethers then?

They really can't control family get togethers.
If you wanted to have one now you could.
Just because they say it's now "OK" doesn't mean it's any safer than it was yesterday, kwim?

Yes, but I'm confused on how this is different from people complaining about other people having parties in their houses. We'd be 11 people total from 3 different houses. And, it would be dinner indoors, not something in the backyard.

At some point we're going to have to start coming out of hibernation and I'm not sure what's the best way to do it.

I mean I guess it's not. But, in reality having dinner with family on 5/16 isn't going to be any "safer" than having dinner on 5/15. You just won't get the judgement on 5/16, I guess?

Yes, I guess once Phase 1 starts then home get togethers are "legal"? I don't know what right anymore!

People are getting "isolation fatigue" - understandably so, and so are starting to "bend" the rules and make excuses, saying it's only family, we stayed 6ft apart, were only outside etc. (except when someone has to go in your house to use the bathroom). But until the hospitals can get back to normal and be able to handle new, incoming cases without getting overwhelmed, we won't get back to normal. Phase 1 is not going to be a sudden, state wide opening up of things. It's going to be certain industries, in less populated areas. I doubt May 15th will change anything for NYC/Long Island. But we have to start somewhere and even baby steps at this point is somewhat encouraging.

All that being said, you can decide to have your family over anytime you want. The chances of someone spreading it to someone else will always exist (until there is a vaccine and everyone in a group has the vaccine). You have to decide (as a PP said) what the risk vs reward is. I think a big part of that decision would be knowing if the people being invited had been out anywhere, in contact with others etc and if anyone is vulnerable - elderly and/or has underlying medical conditions.

I have resigned myself to the fact that life won't really be normal until maybe September. I figured it's better to keep my expectations really low and then be pleasantly surprised if it happens sooner. I would rather avoid the disappointment by not hoping for any sense of normalcy in the spring/summer.

I don't think it will really be normal then either - I think we will be back to school but, things will still be shuttered and there will be some social distancing guidelines in place.

I hope I'm wrong.

As for the glimmer of hope - I still think we have a long road in front of us. The stuff to open first is construction and manufacturing, in upstate NY...

ETA - My DH is an essential worker so we have only had people over in extreme circumstances where no other alternatives were available (non-covid related parental health issues)
