District Administration

Spinning off from another thread-how would the public go about influencing how many superintendents/assistant superintendents/executive directors a district has? Is this possible?

I think the key is to attend all Board of Ed meetings, read all the information, and just voice your opinion at the meetings.

Of course, I'm all talk and no action because I think I only went to a BOE meeting once.

Re: District Administration

Your local board of education decides contracts for length, amount, and person. You would need to attend and ask these questions.

BOE. They hire and approve all superintendents.

Re: District Administration

Things you can do if you are unhappy with how your district is run:

You need to go to BOE meetings and make sure your voice is heard.
You need to get a large group of like minded residents to support you and attend meetings so the district will take your concerns seriously.
You need to start a social media campaign to get additional support.
You need to reach out to the media to have your concerns aired on TV and in print.
You need to run for a BOE position.

District Administration

Thanks everyone. It’s my daughters first year in public school (kinder), so I’m doing as much as I can.

I joined the PTA, and ended up on the board (will continue next year). I was also a class mom, and volunteered a lot at the school.

Since the board meetings have gone online, I’ve listened to every one, and submitted questions. I’ve also spoken to the assistant principal and superintendent.

Now that my littlest is a bit older, I do plan to attend boe meetings next year, and I would love to serve one day when my kids are older-I feel like while they’re younger and I’m on the PTA board it may be a conflict of interest?

You can serve both on the PTA and School Board.

You can be on the the PTA and BOE but BOE members are suppose to be impartial and for all students in all schools and it might seem like you are favoring a particular school if you are on the PTA Board. It might hurt in your elections.

It’s interesting to know that technically I could do it, but I feel like the impartiality may be questioned. Thankfully, I have a few years before I was hoping to do this anyways-and I think it would be useful for me to spend a few years attending meetings first.
