Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing

I think that there are a few issues that came into play with this situation...
1. This was a VERY serious storm that dumped almost 3 feet of snow on the Town of Brookhaven.
2. Your elected Highway Superintendant is out SICK and your elected Town Supervisor is out on VACATION!! .. Yes that's right fokes, even though he knew the storm was coming he still decided to leave town on wednesday for a much needed Vacation
3. I do know in my neighborhood even my street my roads were not plowed at all on Saturday so myself, my STBDH and ALL of our neighbors that were physically capable of doing so got out there with our shovels and snowblowers and did our own street...
I think that the towns , Counties and State are doing the best they can with the amount of snow that we got ... Is it frustrating, yes , but for gods sake instead of sitting here behind a computer complaining .. Grab a shovel or your snow blower and start doing something about it !!!!!!!!
No one should have to shovel their own street that they pay the town to take care of. Most people I know have had to go do it themselves and are not just sitting on their computers complaining. Many can't do it on their own either so they have every right to complain.

^ oh please. Im expected to go out and shovel my long ass curvy block. I pay a lot in taxes, this should have been done. I saw one plow friday afternoon when it started, another got stuck sat morning, never returned. I finally had one ********* come yesterday, who barely had his plow down. I still have a good foot of snow on my block. I live in a curvy neighborhood. They never plowed the curves in the road. Maybe if this schumk didnt go on vacation, or his partner did call in sick something would have been done. You are incharge of a community, and you go on vacation NOW? You call in sick?? Get your ass back to work and clear this shit off my street. So no, I dont feel bad for them, and NO I dont think they are doing all they can. This is complete crap.
***** = D OU C H E BAG
Exactly. Maybe we should all just start deducting money off our next tax bills. Hmmm- let's see. You spent 6 hours shoveling your own freaking street- how much is your time worth an hour? $25? more? Should we send the town a bill? Or maybe hire a private company to plow our street and deduct the bill from the next tax payment. Get the eff out of here. They are never short staffed when it comes to sending out those tax bills. They are SUPER efficient in collecting all monies due to them that is for sure! They don't miss a beat there. There is no excuse.
Amazing how my check cleared much quicker this year for my taxes than any other year.

It makes sense that neighbors pitch in to help each other so the roads are safe. I understand the sentiment behind what you are suggesting.
BUT given that we pay an enormous amount of taxes to our Town Highway Department, where is that money going? What is THEIR responsibility in ensuring the streets are safe to drive? Why weren't they prepared for this storm? It's not like they weren't aware in 2011, we had the snowiest January in history or that we had over 5 feet of snow on the ground. We had virtually no snow last year. Since our taxes are alloted towards road repair, snow removal, hurricane damage to roads...where did the money towards the snow removal go for the year there was no snow?
My husband was out snowblowing 1/4 of the street for hours on Saturday. Where are the plows?
What infuriates me even more is seeing the main road to Huntington train station is a sheet of ice. That area has a population that relies on public transportation. Those poor people are walking on the icy streets while cars are driving on those same dangerous streets. There were small kids waiting out for the buses. What happens when a car skids??

With all the warnings, living in the northeast, on the heels of Sandy...they should have been more prepared and started continuously plowing from the start. I live upstate and can't imagine of this EVER happening...and we get TONS of snow. Yes it's more congested down there but snow storms in NYS are not unfathomable.

And just another thought. What happens if someone gets hurt doing the town's job? What if you throw your back out, slip on ice and break a leg, have a heart attack as many do when shoveling heavy snow? Can you sue the town? Will they pay your medical bills? I doubt it.

Very good point.
It may be tempting to try to do it yourself, but it may not be worth it...
I keep thinking of the man from Selden who died while shoveling. I think he was trying to shovel out for his older mother. So sad.

I've just emailed the Town Superintendent of Highways about the road conditions on the way to my train station.
The last line in my email is: Consider this a formal notification of an unsafe condition. If I hear of any resident or child that was harmed due to the icy conditions, I will be forwarding this email to their attorney.
So in this case, yes..the town may pay out more than they needed to for plowing.

Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
I could see if we never got snow. I'm in Brookhaven and the roads are horrible. It's like the plows gave up at exit 52 on sunrise. I think I have whip lash from driving on lumps and bumps. I really don't see how the buses could even turn on some of these side streets.
I heard plows when it first started to snow and haven't seen any since.
I did fill out a form on the towns website.

I heard it was bad over there. That's my exit and I have to take sunrise today for the first time since the storm. DH told me to get on at Broadway, not by McDonalds. And I guess coming home, (coming from the west) I will get off at Nicols Rd exit. I'm nervous.

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
I am reposting what I posted on my facebook:
After travelling through different areas this morning all i have to say is Town of Brookhaven SHAME ON YOU! It's unacceptable that the majority of the roads are in such despicable conditions. I don't blame the stranded cars or the the workers for this. This was absolutely poor decision making on the part of Town, Highway and even County officials. NOTHING was done on Friday as conditions got worse, which then just snowballed (no pun intended) into the horrible conditions of the roads on TUESDAY! Main roads are finally OK but Secondary and Side roads are disgusting!
We pay some of the highest taxes and we can't get our roads plowed. In 2010 when we had blizzard after blizzard things were plowed. What happened???

Honestly, I feel like Long Island's taxes are so high that you should absolutely be furious over not having your streets plowed a couple of days after the storm! They should have been going around during the storm like the NYC Sanitation did!

Sorry, Im mad.
We, as LIers, pay a ridiculous amount of taxes. There is no reason why it should be taking 4 days to clear off roads.
So how about this...you are one of those people who has not seen a plow. Your 3 year old is playing around and hurts himself, your neighbor has a heart attack, etc., how exactly are emergency crews supposed to get to your child or your neighbor, etc?
This. Being pregnant and a mother of a young child, my first thoughts are of emergencies during a blizzard.
For the amount we pay in taxes, this is terrible. It's February in NY, why are we not prepared for snow?

Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
The only area in CT that is still really struggling right now is Bridgeport. They don't anticipate plowing some streets until SUNDAY. THAT is unacceptable, but they have their own challenges. But, we also got a little more snow in this area than most of LI did. We got about 36-37 inches here in Stratford, CT. Next door in Milford? 38".
We didn't see a plow until Sunday at about 8, about 3 hours after the neighborhood banded together to clear the street. My neighbor across the street couldn't get his plow onto the street, and even when he got enough snow cleared to get it onto the street he struggled. There is no where to put the snow, and the regular plows can't get through the drifts, it's insane. Plows were getting stuck, axles on some private trucks that were contracted broke. But the town had the majority of roads with at least a passing lane done by Monday AM, and mainly done with payloaders, which take longer to clear snow than a plow does. They're still going and clearing roads. Rumors that some small side streets weren't done yet too, but the majority of the town is done.
The town had plows out until the point where it was whiteout conditions, then had them back out.
My time on LI showed me that snow removal in Town of Babylon and Islip is sorely lacking. We wouldn't see a plow or sander until after the storm, we were constantly stuck. I never saw trucks out during the storm or doing presanding like I saw in MA growing up or that I see in CT. And even on small storms the cleanup was lackadaisical. They constantly left dangerously high snow banks, never coming back to clean up later on. I never understood the lack of preparation or inability to properly clear snow from a northeastern locale that should be adept at it by now.
Even though we are struggling with the snow removal up here in CT still, I am reading the comments here and feel like we're so far ahead of you guys with the cleanup and it seems so off. It seems wrong, we got MORE than most of LI, and yet LI is lagging behind so much and it makes no sense, I don't understand it. I think those in Brookhaven/Islip have every right to be angry at this point. There seems to be a big problem with communication and with coordination. Seeing a parking lot with plows in it unmanned is beyond frustrating. Watching plows half ass it is atrocious.
Be mad, it's OK and acceptable IMO. Just make sure that the anger is directed at the politicians who dropped the ball on this (and even the other larger storms that they can't seem to manage............)

Re: Do we have a right to be mad about the lack of plowing
I want to clarify that the acting Superintenent of Highway was not elected to this post, Michael Murphy took over January 1st as Deputy Sup until the Special Election March 5 to fill the spot left vacant by Rouse.
Who will be voting March 5th? The way I see it is a lot of people complain and then do nothing about it. I for one will be voting. The 2 candidates are NYS Asemblyman Dan Losquadro and Brookhaven Town Counsel Women Kathg Walsh. I will be voting for one that did his part in his and as well as Sandy and made sure that the state roads within his district (can't ensure all of LI) were plowed. The other candidate has done NOTHING to help get roads in her district cleared....the choice is clear to me.
Oh and my aunt an uncle still arnt plowed. We thankfully are at this time but driving to wok yesterday was ridiculous and so unsafe.
