circumcision
has anyone not had their son circumcised? My SIL is expecting in december and is telling everyone she doesn't see a need for it and she knew plenty of uncircumcised guys growing up in Texas. She says its becoming more and more popular for people not to do it. We are all a little speechless, anyone know more on the subject?

Re: circumcision
All the men/boys in my DH's family and not circumsized, so our future sons won't be either. I don't think there is any real reason to cut them. JMO.

Re: circumcision
None of the men in my DH's family are, and neither is our son. I also didn't see the need for it.

Re: circumcision
From BabyCenter.com
Between 1989 and February 1999, the American Academy of Pediatrics' policy had been that the potential medical benefits of circumcision outweighed most of the risks. But new research — and never-ending debate — prompted the academy to update its circumcision recommendation in March 1999. The AAP now says that the choice is best left up to parents, who should make an informed decision based on possible health benefits and risks, as well as cultural, religious, and ethnic traditions.

Re: circumcision
It is very common for Latin American/Hispanic men not to be circumsized. The only major problem is usually with dirt getting trapped under the skin but as long as you clean and teach them to clean well it shouldn't be a problem

It's even more common for the Europeans.
The way I see it I don't want to put my newborn through any unnecessary pain.
But I too believe it should be just like his dads.

Re: circumcision
I followed the same rule as the other moms. My husband isn't so my son isn't.

Re: circumcision
It seems that the US is the only country that does this as the norm, and the trend is changing a bit. We had a girl so I didn't have to make that choice. However if we have a boy we will most likely not circ, since DH isn't, and I dont want to put the baby thru any unnecessary pain either.

Re: circumcision
Although DH is, he was adamant about not circumsizing our son. He felt it unnecessary to put a child through the procedure since there's no medical reason to do it.

Our son will not be circumsized. Dh isn't either. But even if he was, I wouldn't circumsize. I don't see a need to.

Re: circumcision
This is something that is changing and is also regional. In certain parts of the country circumcisions are more the majority than in others. And even in those regions more and more people are choosing not to do it.
We chose to circumcise our son, mostly because DH is and we feel that it's still pretty much the majority, though I think it's really approaching 50/50. But it does s#ck to put your baby through that. They say that it doesn't hurt but I don't believe that at all. Tell that to my son who wailed through every diaper change until it healed. But at least it hurts less now than if you have it done later in life.

i had a friend that got it done as an adlult because he wanted it, and wished his parents did it when he was young - he said as an adult it is very painful.

Re: circumcision

I think it is a personal/cultural/social/religious choice that parents make...

Re: circumcision
mine is, and he seemes to have no pain afterwards.
A coworker of mine did not, her son is now 5 and it has been a lot of trouble. She is always trying to clean it and stretch the skin or her son has pain that it is too tight. She regrets not doing it . Also I have an aunt who works ina MD office and she says alot of the men have to have them for medical reaosns when they are older and it is MUCH more painful then.

Re: circumcision
Techincally there is no "reason" for this.. Medically it used to be considered more iof a health risk, but as long as she keeps up on the Cleanliness down there, her little one should be ok...
Most people choose to for religious purposes or because Daddy is, as not to make their son feel "different"....
We chose to b/c DH is... I didn't want to.
ETA:(in response to the post prior to mine) If a child is taught well from day one on how to take care of it, it is just as normal as a vagina is for us. Most men don't clean their BODIES well to begin with, never mind their privates.. Most dont know that bacterias can and will grow,if not cleaned well- even on a circ'd man.
