What is your max distance that you would accept/look for a job?

I mean after all, commute becomes a huge factor once you have a family (even if not in the beginning, I see it being a big resentment down the road in many careers, and rightfully so...)

Im even debating if 30 miles is too far, with rush hour, etc.
I dont even want to look passed 25 miles for that reason (Resenting it later on)...

I know I know, beggars cant be choosers...

but what are you distance limitations?

and any other limitations that I might not have thought about ?

Currently I am in Manhattan so almost anywhere on LI would be great. There were a few places that I turned down interviews because they were to far...hewlett-woodmere, oceanside, and West Hempstead to name a few. I live in centereach. I guess anywhere my commute would be less than 50 minutes would be nice. Right now my commute is 4+ hours

I am 26 miles door to door. It takes 45 minutes going there and 35 minutes going home- don't know why. Does it bother me, um some what, but my Mom is really close if she should get sick and DH is home until 12. The one positive is I totally decompress by the time I get to my daughter.

When I was 7 minutes from work I would come home in the exact mood I left work in good or bad. It was nice the I could come home if I forgot something or wanted to change clothes but I hated running into students on my off hours.

Depends what's important to you and if you have someone close should the kids not be feeling well at school etc.

i live 27 miles from work. the commute stinks but i have a job that is stable and good. when i got my job i wouldn't have dreamed of turning it down. i applied to EVERY district on the island except for about 4 and this was the best of my offers.

honestly, in teaching, beggars can't be choosers is true. this market is TERRIBLE for teachers--if i was looking now, i would take a 50 mile commute if i had to just to have a job. this is why i'm not even looking to move closer to home--there are so few jobs available.

While I do not have children yet, I do understand how it is important to be close to home.

Last year, it was August and DH and I were relocating to Albany. I had to leave my LI job and find a new one up there. Needless to say, the only job I found was 50+ miles away from Albany. With carpooling, my commute was about an hour. At the end of the day, knowing I had an hour drive home was the worst feeling.

So this year I sent out my resumes to schools closer to my house. Luckily I found a job about 15-20 minutes away. It is definitely a nice feeling to know that I will be reclaiming about 80 minutes of my life everyday.

If I didn't find a new job, however, I would still commute the hour to my old job. I preferred having a job far away as opposed to not having a job at all.

apply everywhere...the interview is good practice for when the perfect location comes around.
