Bunion surgery...
Can anyone tell me about bunion surgery? What it was like, how long the healing process is. I have had bunions all of my life and the one on my left foot is killing me. I am getting to the point were it is extremely painful to walk, and it just aches when I am not even putting any wieght on it. I am afraid they are going to tell me surgery is my only option.

I know someone that had bunion surgery. It is not minor - it is pretty invasive. She is a school nurse and did it around a school vacation - I think she was out for 3 weeks and even at that point she was still not even close to being fully recovered.
I do know though that she is very happy she did it.

my mom had bunion surgery twice... once on each foot. the recovery was at least a few weeks and then some. they essentailly break the bone that is the bunion and smooth it out. it is painful, but in hindsight, my mom said it was worth it.

I had it done a while ago and the recovery was pretty long. I was in a hard cast for two months, than went to a soft cast after the pins came out for six weeks... by than I was able to weight bear, but it was a pretty long recovery. Well worth it though!

I actually had both feet done 5 weeks apart from one another. I have to tell you that it is by far the best decision I ever made. I found the surgery to be a piece of cake and as far as recovery I was in one sneaker in 5 weeks and then had the other foot done and then was in both sneakers 5 weeks after the last surgery. My doctor was absolutey amazing. He also did my best friend and another good friend of ours. His name is Dr. Gregory Davies and he is located in Syosset. I highly recommend him.
I also just recently shattered some bones in my toes and he operated on my foot once again and I had no pain at all just could not wear shoes for 6 weeks.
Like I said I thought the surgery was a breeze and I felt no pain at all he put enough anesthetic in my foot after the surgery so I felt nothing. The worst part was showering b/c you cannot get your foot wet!
Oh yeah and I did not need a hard cast only a soft one!

I did it and had no probs. I was laid up for @ 3 weeks and was ok. My doc even did it in office! Fm me for more deails if you want

I did each foot, four weeks apart and I'm so happy I did it.
I was back in sneakers (ugly ones) about five weeks after the second surgery and took a total of ten weeks off from work.
I did have quite a bit of swelling in my feet and ankles for many months afterward. Actually, I didn't feel completely normal or recovered until about a year after the surgery.
Physical therapy definitely helps.
All that being said, I'd definitely do it again.
I feel great and I love my feet!

Were you sedated for the surgery or awake? I am really afraid of being knocked out, I would love it if I can have the surgery while awake!!

I had 8 foot surgeries (ballerina back in the day), my doctor does what is called twilight...you are up when they aren't doing much, but groggy, but out for the count when they are performing the real surgery...they keep bringing you in and out, but you don't remember anything and feel no pain, only difference is you can open your eyes, and hear, in my case the music they were playing, but thats about it. For example in the beginning of the surgery to numb up your foot they knock you out, two minutes later you wake up and don't even realize they started.
For me personally, I like it, my first foot surgery was not that way and they overestimated the amount of anesthesia to give me and i had complications, this way you get what you need, when you need., no more, no less....and can walk out pretty much coherent.

I hadit done on my right foot and i'm so glad I did it. I have a scar about 3 inches long. They shaved it down, screwed my big toe in place and stapled it shut. I was on crutches for a week, then a walking cast for about 3 weeks. Out of work for a month.
