Anyone have Bunion surgery - or know someone?
I'm wondering how painful it is. My left big toe is starting to migrate over and the bunion is making so many of my shoes SO uncomfortable - it's painful. I'd consider doing this - I've heard from a few people already that's it torture.
If you did this - which dr. did you use and do u recommend him.
thanks

I was supposed to 6 years ago, but my insurance lapsed, so I'm still waiting to do it.

Re: Anyone have Bunion surgery - or know someone?
I had a friend who had a severe case on both feet and the surgery was pretty bad. But, if the case is not severe, I have heard that it isnt that bad. I think that the amount of pain and recovery time really depends on how severe they are.

My friend had it done on both feet. I lived with her at the time and from what I can remember it was painful but not ridiculousy so. I think she was more annoyed by having to use crutches and then wear a boot.

Re: Anyone have Bunion surgery - or know someone?
I work for a podiatrist for many years, FM mail me for name and # if intrested. bunion surgery can be very painful. It is more painful to get them both done at once- left and right foot, bilaterally. Just be careful who does the surgery. HTH

My Mom had this on BOTH feet at the same time. She had surgery by Doctor Bodamer in Smithtown. He is EXCELLENT!! I go there myself and know many other people who love him. He is a really great doc - I would recommend him anytime!!

My co-worker just had it done. He said that it wasn't too bad and his recovery seemed to be pretty quick.

Re: Anyone have Bunion surgery - or know someone?
I did. No regrets at all. 2 years ago - one of the best things I ever did for myself.
Prior to the surgery, bunion pain was very minimal. Also - no more inner scuff marks on your shoes...
FM if you have any questions.

Re: Anyone have Bunion surgery - or know someone?
If you follow the doctors orders post op with the medication the pain will be minimal. I was in so much I could only wear slippers for months before so I guess my pain level was pretty high. It is painful without a doubt. My bunion was not the side of my pinkey toe.

Re: Anyone have Bunion surgery - or know someone?
Oops forgot to add it. My doctor's name was Dr. Keslonsky from Huntington Medical Group. He did both my & my mother's foot surgeries. My mother had a harder recovery because she had more of an angle & a toe that had to be fixed too. (hammer toe?)
eta. If you think of it this way - the angle is going to get worse & worse. The toe doesn't start changing direction. It only continues in the direction it's angled toward. The longer you wait, the worse the angle. The worse the angle, the tougher/longer the recovery.

Re: Anyone have Bunion surgery - or know someone?
I forgot to answer your ? in my above post... Prior to surgery I was worried about getting it b/c it's supposed to be one of the most painful surgeries that you can get, but I was in so much pain daily b/c of how bad my foot was, so I decided it was worth it. I didn't have any pain at all after the surgery, I was given codeine and morphine Rx, but didn't use either. I got my stitches out in 1 week, was in a cast for a month, a soft cast for another month, my pins and screws came out when the soft cast was put on... All in all, it was a great surgery and I would do it again in a second. I had an extremely bad bunion from birth and it was really embarassing, so it was well worth it. My dr. was Dr. Cavuoto out in Nassau

It hurts a lot - but I'm worried taht I won't be able to go to the gym for a very long time. Also, how long were you out of work? I have a job where I can do desk work too..but it will be hard to get up and down and walk around I'm sure.
Oh and PINS AND SCREWS? Did that hurt when they took those out? I can't imagine! Hmm I wonder if anyone has any pictures of before & after.
How much does it cost too?

Re: Anyone have Bunion surgery - or know someone?
I had it and had a great experience. Not one painkiller! It is a better recovery if you don't wait until all the toes start to move. My aunt waited so long that her little toes needed pins to be straightened. She still has pain. My podiatrist was nice to look at as well!!!

I had a severe bunion, so mine might be different than yours... I had it done during high school, I had it done the Friday after Thanksgiving and went back to school on Monday, so I didnt' really miss anything... It didn't hurt when they took the pins out... basically they pop out when they are ready b/c the bone heals around it... My doctor told me to think of it like a Thanksgiving turkey - when the turkey is done, the timer will pop out to let you know. I was able to work out again when I got the soft cast off two months after I had the surgery, but my only mistake was I was a catcher for my softball team and I started catching too soon, otherwise my foot would have looked excellent. The cost is up there, but insurance will cover it, besides it's ambulatory surgery (I had mine done at the Day Op center over near Westbury), so you won't even have to stay in the hospital

Re: Anyone have Bunion surgery - or know someone?
I was a ballerina. I had 4 bunion surgeries and four other surgeries to remove broken, dead bones in my feet. I must say, the bunion surgeries were the WORST. My bunions came back, that is why i had to do it again. i need it again, but I give up, it is so not worth it in my opinion unless you really, really need it. I went to the best doctor in NYC and I know he did a great job, but the post op is awful. Unfortunately, I made the situation worse. I was afraid to put my weight on my foot and ended up ripping tendons and causing a hair line fracture in my foot b/c I was walking funny. This brought on monhts of physical thearpy learning to walk properly 'again"
Oh, and the pins set off metal detectors at airports

See..this was the only thing that seemed bad to me - the fact that the bunions might come BACK! All that pain and suffering so nothing....isn't there a way they can now prevent the bones from shifting again?

I went through 3 pairs of orthodics even before we tried surgery. My doctor tried all non-invasive types of treatment first, surgery was my last resort b/c I was in so much pain.
LANA- Don't do it yet, you are still dancing. I was told I would never dance again after the surgeries. I still have alot of pain, I still dance, but it is not the same!
