Anxiety meds...

just looking for feedback from anyone who can give it.

I have received such helpful fm's in the past regarding this. Just read through them again.

My appt is in 2 weeks with dr. I think I am going to bite the bullet and ask for something.

my backround:
never had anxiety or depression until last June.
My boy's asthma has sent me over the edge.
I meditate most nights for 30 minutes, in darkness, silence. It helps.
I lack the exercise that my body is use to...getting a spin bike for house next week.
I am interested in a med that I can wean from easily.
I figure if I go into appt with a little bit of knowledge on brands and types, it will make me feel better.

thanks! (fms are great)

Re: Anxiety meds...

I am on Cymbalta. I have chronic anxiety that has lasted almost my entire life. I would have racing thoughts, bad dreams, panic attacks, racing pulse, you name the anxiety symptom and I had it. I tried therapy for years and meditation and they would only help for short bouts of time. Finally about a year and a half ago I went and got meds and I'm a completely new person with none of the aforementioned symptoms. The only bad side effect is that I get sweaty easilyChat Icon Also, the first two weeks, I was violently nauseaous for a few hours each day, but my doc warned me about that. It completely went away.Chat Icon

for me - xanax was like taking a few deep breaths. it calmed me down to a point of being rather 'zen' - but never made me insane tired or anything like that....

i was also put on paxil - that was a NIGHTMARE to come off of......i had horrible withdrawl and i will NEVER do that again!

Re: Anxiety meds...

i'm on Lexapro...I always had anxiety but after my son was born I had PPD which lasted a whole year until I finally decided to get some help. Changed my life! I also take zanax when I need it but honestly, if I take 1 or 2 a month that's a lot.

Good luck!

Me too. I heart Lexapro. I went off when I was pregnant and all was well, but after having DD, the anxiety and depression crept back again...after I was done breastfeeding, I went right back on. It just makes me a little more tired than usual.

Re: Anxiety meds...

thanks! so I will say no to paxil, but the other ones seem okay.

I don't know if xanax will work for me. I tend to think there is nothing wrong with the way I am feeling until its already passed, you know?

Same here. It just makes me feel calm with an hour.

But what I have found most helpful has been Yoga. I try to do it at home as much as I can, but I also go for classes. I think Yoga is better then meds any day.

For me my mind just seems to run away with it's self and I have to ground myself again. Yoga helps me do that, but there are days when I just have to take the Xanax.

GL and feel better.Chat Icon

Re: Anxiety meds...

EMDR Therapy

EMDR wiki page...with links to tons of resources

I used this after 9/11/01. I was in NYC, saw things I wished I could forget. I work down there for four years after 9/11, for a non-profit, helping small mom & pop business access grants to rebuild if they were in the red zone.

I also used this after heart surgery. After surgery I was on so many heart meds, I felt I did not need another pill to take. Yoga and guided meditation in a class worked too. Also, sitting my DH down and letting him know when I needed a break to go to yoga class helped as well.

Basically, I had anxiety from PTSD after both life-altering events. I would say that the fear that your child is going to stop breathing at any moment qualifies as life-altering.
Janice - look into it. It worked wonders for me. FM me if you want details. Hang in there. Chat Icon
