Wisdom Tooth- get the IV or no?

I have an impacted/infected wisdom tooth- I never had this before and I am not to keen on the dentist to begin with. I have a few days of Antibiotics before surgery on Thursday..

I have 3 choices

Just novicaine

Novicaine + Laughing gas

Novicaine + Laughing gas + IV (sedative)

I've never been "put under" and I am so scared that I won't wake up Chat Icon I know the chances are very slim but I'm wondering if I can just tough it out with just the novicaine and gas...

Im getting 2 teeth removed.

Thoughts?

I was knocked out when I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed. It was over and I woke up before I knew it! I'm a wuss with medical proceedures, so it was the best way for me to go.

For wisdom teeth---and I too have impacted wisdom teeth that have to come out---I'd go with the sedative as well. You'll wake up--they are trained docs and I'm sure it will be okay. I've been put under before and was amazed at how I woke up so quick and easy when they brought me back from being under.

Good luck!!!

Re: Wisdom Tooth- get the IV or no?

Get the IV. The sedative is not the same as anesthesia. You won't really be "out" or asleep, but you won't remember anything. Chat Icon

ETA - I have the opposite problem, fear of waking up during surgery because it's happened to me before. Actually, it's happened to my aunt, my father, AND to me once already. So while it's a different fear regarding being "put out" I do understand the fear aspect.

You WILL wake up though. It'll be fine.

And PS - don't try to drink through a straw for a few days after the procedure. Man did I learn THAT the hard way. Chat Icon

I had my impacted wisdom teeth removed two at a time with just novacaine.

I was "knocked" out for a root canal and it was the worst experience of my life. I was out of it for 24 hours. It was so horrible that I never went back to have the temporary tooth replaced with a cap. It was YEARS later before I would even go to the dentist again.

Re: Wisdom Tooth- get the IV or no?

I've had it done that way twice and would do it again. Very little side effects, within an hour I was back to my normal self. You will need a ride from the office; they won't let you go otherwise, so make sure you have someone to drive you home.

The place I went has gotten great reviews here - it's in Massapequa on Broadway. I'm not sure where you are, but they're pretty awesome.

Re: Wisdom Tooth- get the IV or no?

I've had three out with just novocaine, not such a big deal.
But I agree with Kara about not drinking thru a straw for a couple of days.
I too learned the hard way.

I had one taken out with just novicane and the laughing gas. Wasn't bad at all. That laughing gas can really make you loopy if you take some deep breaths.

I do wish I had my ipod because there is some noise involved and I could hear not so nice things even though I felt nothing.

Re: Wisdom Tooth- get the IV or no?

I worked for an oral surgeon for seven years, went to school for dental assisting and hate going to the dentist.

I would highly recommend getting all your wisdom teeth pulled all at the same time and be put under. I was not born with wisdom teeth, but that is the way I would do it if I had them. My husband did all four and was put under, do to what I am telling you. He was out of it for a day or two and in pain, so you will need to take or at least get the pain prescription filled and take the pills when you start to feel pain, when the novocaine wears off.

You will not feel well for a few days but that is all normal. It is a very big procedure to removal impacted wisdom teeth.

Sorry for the news. But you will be glad you got all done at once, so that you do not have to ever go through this again.

Re: Wisdom Tooth- get the IV or no?

i had laughing gas and novacaine for 2 teeth. i originally only wanted the gas, but he gave me both. i don't remember a thing and although i felt a little loopy afterwards, i slept it off and less than a day and i was fine.

everyone reacts differently to all of those things. i was fine, my dad couldn't take novacaine b/c he would get sick or NOT wake up for hours and DH said he cried like a baby for hours after his wisdom teeth were removed!

good luck!

Re: Wisdom Tooth- get the IV or no?

I was out for my surgeries. The doctor would not do all 4 at the same time, why, we don't know.

The first time, the sedative wore off as they were stiching me up. I can still remember my whole head moving to one side as I watched them stitch. I was crying because it started to hurt. The doctor was horrible, she told my mom I was lying about waking up. I was 16, why would I lie?

Then, when I went back for the other 2, the doctor double billed the insurance company on purpose to get more money. My mom had to file a fraud claim.

Sorry, got off track...I would be put out for that, I usually feel everything going on in my mouth with just Novocaine and sweet air.
