WWYD? Full time job vs. Contract position
Full time job -Been there for 9 months -Pay is okay -Small company -Like coworkers -Love job, able to be very creative -Stable, but not much growth unless Mgr. leaves
Contract job -Just had interview -Pay is 40% MORE per year than current job -Huge well-known company -Can't really be as creative -1 Year contract that will be extended if they like his work
This is for DH... benefits are not an issue, he and DD are on mine.

Re: WWYD? Full time job vs. Contract position
Tough one, given the economy. I think it should be based on his creativity and room to grow. I think I might take the chance and give the contract job a shot. Hopefully in a year, they will keep him and he will have room to grow from there. Good luck!

definitely #2.
Generally, I would say that his ability to be creative and like his work is more important than the money but in this case, since the salary is sooooo much more in #2, I think he should take #2.

Re: WWYD? Full time job vs. Contract position
For me, it would depends on how badly we want/need the extra pay in situation 2. Loving the job and having good coworkers and stability has a lot of value, IMO.
I'd say if you need the money and/or DH is looking for a new opportunity/wants to leave the current job anyway, go for #2!
If he's perfectly happy where he is though and you guys are doing well with the lower pay grade, I'd stay put.

Re: WWYD? Full time job vs. Contract position
hmmm I think our DH's are in the same field Jess- design right?
I can see why you would be on the fence. It's a tough market out there. 40% is a really nice incentive though, and I'm sure your DH would do really well with the new company. It also opens up more doors with networking since it's a bigger company.
Good luck!

ITA!!
i have done both contract and full time employment ... and they both have their ups and downs...
its really about the type of life he wants to lead.... contract work had GREAT opportunities to build a skill set and resume and the ability to learn a great number of industries etc... makes one well rounded.
on the other hand... steady full time jobs provide guaranteed income and employment. however "guaranteed" employment can be these days... not to mention benefits...

Re: WWYD? Full time job vs. Contract position
Thanks for your input... It just sucks that they want to hire on a short term contract and not actual full time employees.
Jess, we are doing fine with the salary he makes now and he wasn't looking for another job. He was offered an interview out of nowhere b/c a friend heard of the opportunity and got him in. Of course, the extra money would be GREAT but the stress of the one year countdown would be tough I think.
MrsYank, yes he's a graphic designer and LOVES what he does. The contract job doesn't use the programs he uses now and it's pretty set layouts, etc. The job he has now he can be super creative.

I think if we were doing OK with salary now, we'd stay put. I know creativity is really important to my DH (and I am sure to yours as well) also it is a full time position.
Good luck!

I left a job like this for 40% more pay and I regretted it everyday at the new job!
you cannot buy happiness!

Re: WWYD? Full time job vs. Contract position
I think my big concern would be what if they don't renew his contract? Could he screw himself a year from now and have a really difficult time finding something or will he even be able to come back to where he is now?

since he is under your benefits, I would go with number 2.

Hmmm as a Graphic Designer myself (among other things) sometimes being creative is better than more pay...but since the contract position is only a year he might be OK with it since it's a limited time...good luck with whatever he decides (and i'll take whichever job he gives up...haha )

Re: WWYD? Full time job vs. Contract position
#1. Money can't buy happiness and if he's in a creative field he needs to have creative ability. He might feel stifled in job #2.

Re: WWYD? Full time job vs. Contract position
I would stick with his current Job. My dad works in contracted jobs like this, and when his contract didn't get renewed because of budget cuts, he was out of a job. OVERNIGHT! you have a house and a baby. and unless you don't count on you DH's salary, I think taking a risk like that isn't worth the extra cash up front. Money doesn't buy you happiness. While its nice and all, he won't be able to be as creative, which I'm sure makes him happy at his current job. and at the end of the day, you are always going to be worrying
