I'd say go with you gut. You are questioning this Dr. for a reason.
I know a lot of the PP are saying bedside manner means nothing to them, but I disagree. With the numerous medical problems I have, I need a great Dr. WITH great bedside manner. Not every problem I have is cut and dry and I find with the "Cold" Drs. if it isn't textbook, it's nothing. But a Dr. who is more "Caring" about his patients is willing to go beyond textbook and to help you physically AND emotionally.
Just my opinion.
See I respectfully disagree. While it is important that the "cold" doctor listen to your history closely. If the doctor thinks that everything is textbook or it is nothing then they are NOT good doctors. There is a difference between being very clinical and many top doctors just aren't personable and being cold and not listening or taking the time to appropriately evaluate your patient. If a doctor dismisses you easily and you have something that isn't cut and dry you should find someone else because they are not a good a good doctor.
I could be wrong but it doesn't sound like this is a top doctor that she was referred to at say cornell or Columbia presbyterian and just doesn't have much personality - it sounds more like she picked him out of a book and knows nothing about him. So in that case unless he was referred to me by several doctors and know to have a top rep I would find someone new.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion. I understand what you are saying. And can see your point. But with the things I have been through and numerous Drs. I've had to see, a little bedside manner goes a long way. JMO
I have the OP seeks a second opinion before getting surgery from a Dr. she clearly doesn't feel comfortable with.

I have no way of knowing if he is competant, which is why I am so hesitant. I don't know anyone who has used him, and he has no ratings as far as I can see on any of the medical websites.
how did you even hear of him then? imho, if you are even questioning his abilities and you dont like his personality...find another dr
I looked up "Vascular Surgeons" in a certain zip code, and his name appeared. I called, made appointment and met with him. His office is nice, his staff was nice, he just didn't come off rainbows and lollipops, you know? Def not questioning his abililtes, just don't know enough about him to even form an opinion.
But, I am going to go ahead with it.
Thanks everyone for all of your help!!! Much appreciated

For a surgeon, it wouldn't matter too much for me for this kind of procedure although it would be nice if we clicked better. As long as his credentials check out, then I would be ok with him. For a PCP, that's a different story as that'll be a long term relationship.
