Would you have a medical procedure done if...

you thought the doctor had zero personality, never smiled, and was just blah??

Not major, no general anesthesia. He would be removing a major vein in your leg.

I know this should be on the health board..but I need to make a decision ASAP..hope it doesn't get moved.

Re: Would you have a medical procedure done if...

Normally, I like people to have nice personalities.

In this scenario, I would not mind. HIs professionalism would outweigh his personality, IMO, forn a surgical procedure.

that wouldnt make a difference to me. Is he a competant dr? Removing a major vein doesnt require anesthesia?

Re: Would you have a medical procedure done if...

yes, as long as they were a good doctor I would. I am only concerned with their abilities.
The doc that did my egg retrieval had zero personality and I got two babies out of that :) good luck! feel good!

Yes. If a person has a great reputation in regard to those procedures, I would be completely fine with it.

Best of luck and a speedy recovery!

I personally could care less about bedside manner if the doctor is an excellent one. There are many not so great docs out there who's patients think they're wonderful just becuase they are charming. I go to a doctor for my health, not for a friend. It amazes me how many people don't see it this way. Chat Icon

Especially a surgeon. A PCP you really want someone that you get along with, since you'll be with them for years, and discussing lots of different issues over the years. A surgeon, though, you'll hopefully only be with for one instance (with multiple visits, of course, but just one procedure). You want the best surgeon, not the best personality.

Good luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon

As long as he could clearly explain to me the procedure, the risks, the recovery & had a reputation as an excellent surgeon, I don't need the personal connection.

i dont know about this one...i think there are plenty of doctors that have good reputations and also have a good/decent bedside manor.

i guess what it come down to is how comfortable you are with the dr? would you feel comfortable calling him a day or two after surgery if you had any questions/concerns? do you feel he explained everything to you? etc

I would go my gut. If it didn't feel "right" to me I would change doctors.

If he's reputable and a great Doc then do it, but I do like personality along with it.
I have picked my Docs based on reviews... great credentials and their personable.
For my sched c-section I kept joking with my Doc he's not allowed to go out partying the night b4. Even joked around the day of the c-section. Put me at ease during the surgery. It helped

I'm looking for a doctor, not a friend. As long as I thought he knew what he was doing, told me about all the risks and fully informed me of everything I need to know, I would use him.

I know right! Its amazing what they can do!

I have no way of knowing if he is competant, which is why I am so hesitant. I don't know anyone who has used him, and he has no ratings as far as I can see on any of the medical websites.

If they had good credentials and a good reputation, then yes. I don't care if they have no personality.

Is he a good doctor? That is the main thing to consider when having surgery.

Absolutely the ONLY thing I care about if someone is operating on me is that they are the BEST out there in their area of expertise. I'm not looking to take them to lunch as long as they listen to my history (so that it is accurate) I don't care if they are a complete jerk as long as they skilled at their job. I would say that many of the really top surgeons tend to not have great personalities OR think that they are god's gift to the world. Vice versa sometimes the really nice ones are not nearly as skilled. Of course there are always exceptions - but I would say if the doctor you are thinking of using is a top doctor I would worry MUCH more about that then if they are nice or have great bed side manner.

well most of those things like healthgrades are complete BS. Have you checked him out on NY doctor profile? What hospital is he affiliated with? Where did he go to school - where did he do his residency? Board Certified? NYDr profile might show if he has been sued or he settled but honestly it isn't very accurate AND doesn't give you a good idea of his competence.

Re: Would you have a medical procedure done if...

I'd say go with you gut. You are questioning this Dr. for a reason.

I know a lot of the PP are saying bedside manner means nothing to them, but I disagree. With the numerous medical problems I have, I need a great Dr. WITH great bedside manner. Not every problem I have is cut and dry and I find with the "Cold" Drs. if it isn't textbook, it's nothing. But a Dr. who is more "Caring" about his patients is willing to go beyond textbook and to help you physically AND emotionally.

Just my opinion.

Agree completely. The best way to find a doctor is to get another doctor's recommendation, then investigate their credentials, education and skillset.

If you get lucky enough to find someone who had something done with him/her..even better.
