Nobody has experience with ear infections in dogs?

I posted the other day but no answer... I originally took my 8yo pug to the vet becaouse his hearing is starting to go. They found a lot of wax and blood in his ears so I started giving him gentizol on Saturday which is very thick and his hearing is worse now. I googled it and I shouldnt have done that.

I have to take him back to the vet tonight and I'm really worried. Any experience?

Re: Nobody has experience with ear infections in dogs?

I'm not sure of the medication we give our dog for his ear infections, but he is very prone to them. We have to go to the vet at least once a year for ear infections alone. The medicine they gave us was a thick liquid, too, so it's most likely the same one. We had no issues with it. We'd give him 2 drops in each ear twice a day and massage it in. His infection cleared up right away. Unfortunately he's still suffering from allergies though, so he's still kinda itchy. We never really noticed any loss in his hearing though, even before he got the wax cleaned. And there was a ton of it. No blood though.

I'm not sure what you're asking though... do you think the vet made the wrong call as far as the medication you were given? If so, I'd consider taking him to another vet just to see if they give the same diagnosis/treatment.

ETA: I saw your other post, so I'm just going to answer those questions over here. We can't clean our dogs ears at home. The first vet we went to wouldn't let me stay in the room with him while she cleaned his ears (I was there for the entire appointment otherwise, so I don't know why she wouldn't but whatever) and he was traumatized. Chat Icon As soon as I left the room, he flipped and they tried to hold him down and clean his ears but he wouldn't let them. They didn't even clean them and I never went back to that vet again. Anyway, my dog now needs to be muzzled to have his ears cleaned. It takes 4 of us to hold him down and clean his ears (me, my DH, the vet, and the vet tech). So we take him every 6 months to the vet for a check up and to clean his ears. Even still he gets ear infections. Chat Icon In between visits, if we notice anything in his ear, we clean it out with a warm washcloth. Granted we can't really get IN there with that washcloth, but the way he bucks and flips out, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that anyway.

As far as the medication, I'm sure if your vet prescribed it, it's safe to use. When I had a bad ear infection, the medication I was given said the same thing about deafness/ruptured eardrums so I think that's going to be the case with any medication you get. Anyway, I hope you're feeling a little bit better about it and that your pup is feeling better! Chat Icon

I have a cocker spaniel, so they are prone to ear infections. The vet gives us cleaning solution we squish into his ear and then massage the passage to bring the gook up. Then we swab with cotton balls and q-tips till it's clean. If he already has an infection the vet can give you drops/gels or pills to help clear it up but if he has a lot of build up you may need to let them to a flush of the ears to get it all out.

My dog just used mometamax for his ear infections. Many many posts online from people who claim the rx caused deafness.
Eta: I alerted vet to my concerns, but she assured me it was safe, despite all the allegations online. His ear infections were so bad, I wound up using it. Vet said there was no pill or other rx to give

Thanks guys for your input. We went back tonight to the same group but saw a different (older) doctor. He said basically that there's no age for dog s to go deaf and it can happen at any time. His ears are clear now thanks to the gentizol and and it's apparent that hes losing his hearing (right now just losing certain tones). It's sad but the doc said he's otherwise very healthy and there's no reason why he won't live a long life.

Just kidding mama. I'm sorry, it's so hard to watch our babies struggle. But dogs are soo adaptable, he'll adjust and so will you! I'm going to see Maggie this weekend, I'll let you know how she's doing with it because she's a couple months ahead of Joey.

ETA: Also, bright side, at least the babies crying won't bother him!
