changing locks - new question
thanks for the responses - my dilemma now is that we are not moving in right away (maybe 2 months) but are having a contractor come work on the house daily so will be giving him a key. do we change the locks twice (once when we close and once when he is done working)? or wait until work is done/we move? or just do it at close and trust the contractor?
im going to admit, i am probably a minority to even think of this...but did anyone change the locks when they closed on their new home???

Re: changing locks - or am i crazy?
You'd be in the minority if you DIDN'T change your locks! You have no idea how many dozens of people might have a key to the old locks. It's the cheapest form of initial home security.
Plus, if you get new locks, you can have them all keyed the same, so it's one key for all the locks, even if you have 5 exterior doors and a shed like I do.

Yup, we changed the locks and the keypad on the garage as well. Just bc the previous owners supposedly gave you all the keys to the home doesn't mean they made several copies. This is MY home now. I felt more comfortable when the back door and front door locks were changed.

changing locks - or am i crazy?
I changed mine. At closing, I was mentioning doing it and my realtor was shocked and said she never did it or heard of it. Yet, the sellers (who were people I knew) agreed with me that I should change them. Ha ha.

We changed the front door and the back door. We got it from Home Depot or Lowes and DH did it himself.

you can do it yourself for the cost of the new set and a screw driver.
I wouldn't pay someone to do this.
and I've been in my house for 5 years and have yet to change the locks.

We didn't spend a night in our house before changing the locks.

Re: changing locks - new question
For the follow-up question, depending on how many locks you have, and what your final plans are, I would 1) get an electronic lock, so you can have a programmable code that you can give him (I have one of these, and I install one at the IL's house so they can't get locked out of their own house). 2)Replace all of the locks so they are all keyed the same, but have one lock different. You can give the contractor a key to the different lock, then swap that one lock out when he's done. 3) Get a resettable Kwikset lock with SmartKey. You can keep the same lock in the door, but you can reprogram it to use a different key. That way, you can swap keys in a couple of seconds. I did this with my shed lock. I reset it to use the same key as the rest of the house.

changing locks - new question
I left the old locks on the doors while I had my house painted and had the locks changed before we moved our stuff into the house.

changing locks - new question
IMO I would change all the locks and leave one as the different lock (a home depot basic lock and key) (all my locks were keyed so the 1 key opens all doors) only give the contractor the key for the one door and after all the work is done change the lock to match all the others
if that makes sense...

Same here. We went right from closing to Home Depot. DH did it himself. I also agree that there's no reason to hire someone to do it. It was pretty easy.

These are the locks we used. Inexpensive at HD or Lowes, easy to install, and they'll be easy to reset once your contractor is finished.

But a lot of 80 yos have friends, family, neighbors, etc with keys. My aunt had at least 5 sets of extra keys floating around. My mom's neighbors have keys to her place. I wouldn't worry about the 80 yos,but do you trust their teenage grandkids, too?
