Can you paint exterior brick?
DH and I recently went to an open house at a house that I absolutely love. The exterior of the house is red brick. It's a huge turn off for DH - he's not sure what can be done with it.
Does anyone know if it's possible to paint brick or to side over it?

You can definitely do either one. Just keep in mind that once you paint brick, it's nearly impossible to go back to pure brick again. You can change the color, but it's very hard to get all the paint off. Lots of houses have painted brick, either interior fireplaces or exterior walls.

Can you paint exterior brick?
You can also apply a veneer stone to brick as well. We plan on doing this down the road. The bottom half of my front is brick.

Ahhh! That's great news! I wasn't sure that siding could be applied over brick! This changes a lot since I know that was really one of DH's major issues with the house.

It's kind of funny because a lot of buyers prefer brick homes, and a brick house usually has a bit more value than a comparable non-brick house.
But I know aesthetics and curb appeal are important to most buyers, and it can be very subjective. As others have said, you can definitely paint exterior brick.

I don't think I would paint the brick because its going to be a pain to maintain when the paint chips and you need to re-touch. I live in an area with many brick split levels and there is one house not to far from me that sided the entire house, covering the brick. You can also put the stones on top like someone else had mentioned.

Whitewashed brick is nice. I'm whitewashing my brick fireplace and then want to do the same to the exterior lower half of the house.

The brick in my yard (garage) is whitewashed and it gets cracked, dirty, etc all the time. My neighbor who has the same house went right over the brick with siding.

How do you do siding on a brick house? I'm assuming you cant nail into brick, so what do they use to adhere the siding to the brick?

We had brick on the lower half of our house and then went to siding on the whole thing. They removed all of the brick before adding the siding.
