Re: Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
eat both - eat anything. I don't get this don't eat shit for pregnancy. I don't buy it because I have worked around food for a very long time and only experienced a listeria break out once ten years ago.

And how often do you hear of listeria from cold cuts? Like NEVER. It's most often in salads and fruits and veges. So why are we not told to avoid fruits and veges? I remember recently it was in hummus and also in Cantalope.
I don't know why it's only cold cuts that get a bad rap.

I know for sure in Europe pregos avoid raw veggies and salads out of fear of listeria, but will have the random glass of wine now and then!
I've been staying away from soft-serve and fountain drinks.

When I was in France and was pregnant I was super careful with cheese, cream, etc because they dont pasteurize things like us. Ever get a pastry in a France and put it in the fridge, it's moldy the next day. My mom got really bad food poisoning that trip from custard I almost had and thought better of. When I miscarried the end of the trip I pigged out on cheese for the last 3 days.
They are very careful about food when pregnant, my sis lives there and is due with her second in May. But they do drink wine.

it's more often fruits/veggies because it's never cooked and typically washed properly. people working in fields typically go to the bathroom in the fields, animals go as well. Then you have where they keep the food at the stores which is typically in the back near a dumpster = bad.

I've seen listeria from soft serve.

I honestly eat everything except raw sushi...but I'll even eat a piece of spicy tuna from a reputable place here and there...If you can buy it at an American supermarket it should be fine.. You just have to do what your personally comfortable with.... also I hear you're more likely to catch listeria from fresh fruit and veggies rather than cold cuts/meats....which boggles my mind. I agree. I'm pretty lax with this. The only thing I stay away from is sushi. I eat everything else in moderation.

Plus these "rules" weren't even around when our parents were pregnant. We all turned out ok. I find a lot of them to be a little too much. Listeria is so so rare.

Exactly. Yet the preggos all chow down on the salad and fruit like it's going out of style but a ham sandwich- NO WAY Again, the cases of listeria from cold cuts are much much less than from fruits and veges- for the reasons you stated here.

It's a wonder any of us survived the womb in the 70s and 80s with our mom's smoking, drinking and eating cold cuts with reckless abandon!!

Re: Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
I do everything in moderation. I had cold cuts today. I drink coffee. I've eaten hot dogs. I've had feta chesse. Only thing I don't think I could do is drink alcohol (even though I know you can) just my personal comfort level.

Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
First pregnancy i was super concerned about what to eat but second time around, i think anything in moderation is ok. I have had ham, raw milk and various cheeses - haven't had a problem.

If you're concerned about listeria, add prepackaged caramel apples to the list of foods not to eat!

Re: Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
I have cold cuts all the time! Cold too (THE HORROR) I just make sure I go to a deli that is slammed all the time with customers. The blades are always moving, the meat is always fresh. If you're going to a deli that looks like it's heyday was back in the 80's then I'd be wary.
I also have soft cheese, I just make sure the first ingredient listed on the back is pasteurized milk.

Re: Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
I never would have thought twice about having ham, or roast beef, so to the OP, enjoy!
I ate absolutely anything I wanted. I was as careful as I reasonably could be without living in a constant state of fear. I also got in my car every day and drove, which was a far greater risk than the potential for listeria from my italian heros. But to each their own.

Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
Eat it all and enjoy it! There's really so little that is really not allowed. As my OB has always said to me....all ok in moderation. Enjoy!

Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
Most soft cheeses are pasteurized so it's fine. Especially cooked. And once whatever it is gets heated to steaming, it kills the bacteria. When it's cool enough to eat, enjoy it.

Re: Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
The biggest thing with those meats is that it is cooked to the steaming hot temperature. If it's cold cuts (ie not heated) then we need to avoid but the ham you should be okay. Just make sure she really heated it well.
