Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
Just wondering if you ladies have any insights or info on what is acceptable and ok to eat around this time of year.
Spiral ham? Roast beef?
These are on both my mother's and MILs menus and I feel like both are questionable - I avoided the ham at Thanksgiving, but I really wanted it!
I know cold meat antipasto is out. Egg nog is a no. Ciders are no. Any good news?

Re: Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
Ham should be fine. Its precooked already and then heated up again so should be totally fine. Roast beef should also be fine assuming its not completely rare. My Dr says everything in moderation so maybe just have a small taste of the beef, ham is fine and then load up on the mashed potatoes & gravy and all the other yummy sides!!

I agree. Ham is fine. And just not blood rare roast beef. ENJOY!'

Ham is totally fine. As previous poster said, they are already fully cooked and are just heated to temperature to serve. Roast beef is also fine but avoid eating parts that are still bright red/pink and noticeably rare. If the whole piece of meat is rare, take a few pieces and throw them in the microwave for a little to cook them through. As for deli meats and antipasto, I'd skip it. You can however have any deli meats that are cooked as it would kill any possible bacteria. I make a bread that has sausage, pepperoni, and salami in it but its baked at 375 so totally safe. While my mom and MIL are being great and catering some things to me, I'm bringing appetizers with me on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day that are safe for me to eat (but are of course going to be offered to everyone). FYI, sounds like you are Italian since antipasto will be served -- you can also eat fresh mozzarella as long as its made with pasteurized milk. The kind from Iavarone, Uncle Giuseppes, is pasteurized -- says so on the label. Enjoy! It's actually not that bad at all!

Re: Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
You can eat just about anything you want. Ham and roast beef are both cooked, so you can have both. I make roast beef every Christmas, even last year while I was preggo and I ate it. Even a few bites of cold antipasto won't hurt, just don't eat the whole tray! The egg nog is fine, MOST of the egg nog sold in supermarkets is pasteurized, just like cheese. The chances that it's not pasteurized are very slim - just check the carton. I had a few glasses of egg nog last year
It's one day, enjoy it. Just stay away from raw meats, which I'm assuming aren't on the menu anyway.

Eat either. The actual list of no nos is not as long as we crazy Americans make it. We tend to go overboard on everything in this country. Eat up!!!

It didn't even cross my mind while pregnant that I couldn't eat stuff like that. It's cooked.

They just have to be hot. You can't have ham or Roast Beef as in the cold cuts, or you shouldn't, but even then if you heat it way up I think its ok. But a spiral ham or a roast beef should be fine. I like my steak so a "good vet can bring it back" as DH puts it, but since being pregnant I just make sure i get more medium pieces. Roast Beef is usually done on the rarer side, so just ask your mom and MIL to cook a piece a little more done for you.

Just don't eat the leftovers cold on a sandwich. If you eat them make sure they are heated up. But that goes for any meat.

Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
What is going to kill me is no pigs in a blanket, Raspberry baked brie, or blue cheese stuffed mushrooms. Appetizers are definitely harder then the meal.

Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
Crashing but I never had any restrictions of any kind. My dr looked at me like I was crazy for asking what I should avoid lol. I was pregnant in Utah and Boston and both times they said eat what I want. Cold cuts, feta cheese etc. I never limited myself. It's these crazy NY doctors lol. (I am saying that as a funny. I am from NY, but has since moved) my friends in NY always had weird no no list. Lol. Enjoy. It's the holidays!!!!!

I honestly eat everything except raw sushi...but I'll even eat a piece of spicy tuna from a reputable place here and there...If you can buy it at an American supermarket it should be fine.. You just have to do what your personally comfortable with.... also I hear you're more likely to catch listeria from fresh fruit and veggies rather than cold cuts/meats....which boggles my mind.

Can't you have the Brie and blue cheese in these cases since it is cooked?

I am not sure. Brie is a super soft cheese. Maybe when it first comes out of the oven, but the Brie in the puff pastry cools down awful fast.
Blue Cheese I should avoid even when I am not pregnant as I am allergic to mold, but I don't care about myself. But with baby on board, no moldy cheese, pasteurized or not.

Both of those are fine, I've eaten Brie, blue cheese, cold cuts, rare meat etc. both pregnancies and all is good. If you are really concerned, just stay away from the more rare slices of roast beef. The ham is 100% safe...

What's wrong with pigs in blankets? The hot dog? I ate full hot dogs my whole pregnancy. Yeah nitrates aren't great for anyone, pregnant or not, but the amount of nitrates in the tiny piece of hot dog in a pig in a blanket really isn't enough to do any harm. But I also drank a glass of wine here and there. And ate cold cuts (not heated) daily And soft serve.

Re: Christmas dinner - what can I eat?
Thanks so much for making me feel better!!
I will definitely be having ham! Can't wait!!
My dr. said hot dogs were ok as long as they were "steaming hot" . . . so, I guess it's about the listeria as much as the nitrates. I think it's the holidays and I can splurge a little.
I've been really laying off the cheese and that is my one downfall. LOVE soft cheeses and moldy cheeses, the stinkier the better honestly. I guess if it's pasteurized it's ok, but it still being soft makes me nervous for listeria reasons.
My OB nurse said she has never seen a case of listeria in all her years, but I guess you have to do what is comfortable for you!

Every dr, my RE, my GP, my OB said no cold cuts. Super dangerous for listeria and super high in sodium, which causes swelling. Not worth it.
Hot dogs are so bad for you normally, no way I'd eat them pregnant. I wasn't given a big no list but hot dogs were also on it.

Soft Serve.... Yeah I work in ice cream. We're a super clean place whose never gotten a major health code violation and cleans our machines on schedule or before.... Even under the best conditions I've seen the product turn sour often enough I would not get soft serve while pregnant. I wasn't even told to stay away from it. I made that decision on my own, and it's my VERY FAVORITE food.
If your going to have it always have someone taste it for you first.
