Question for DOE teachers

I am a permanent sub in a Long Island district. While I have been sending out resumes all over LI for September, I am thinking about broadening my search to include the DOE.

I obviously want to be as close to home as possible, so would like to no farther than Queens.

When you apply, do you get a "choice" about where you want to be? Once in the system, can you be transferred without your consent? I am nervous about the DOE because its SUCH a huge system, but I know there are jobs out there.

Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

You can choose where you apply. You also can transfer yourself every year on the open market. (Of course you need to interview at each school).

I started in Canarsie and hated it. The next year I wound up in Jamaica, where I have been for 4 years.

Totally agree with the previous poster. You can apply to any school that interests you. I would suggest being proactive. I walked resumes into any school I really liked. It's partly the reason I have my current job.

Where I am now has the normal pros and cons. Overall, I have a decent position, the top classes, not bothered about lesson plans, etc. As much as I would love to work closer to home, it's hard to leave a job where I am one of the "top" teachers in my department in terms of seniority, etc.

Question for DOE teachers

I was in the same position as you. Had 3 LRs on Long Island, but never was able to get a job. I filled out that crazy looooong NYCDOE Application and only checked off Queens, Never got a job that way, though.

I had a few friends who worked in the city already, and they had access to the "open market transfer system" which is a portal for doe employees who want to transfer to other schools. The jobs on that portal weren't visible through the regular doe application, so that was really helpful. In June/July, I compiled a list of schools from the transfer system that I liked, and were close to home, and literally drove all around Queens and hand delivered my resume. Some schools wouldn't let me speak to the principal and took my resume at the door, and others let me walk right in. I got my job this way, and the principal ended up interviewing and hiring me that day.
