WWYD - Blood work in early pregnancy (UPDATED at BOTTOM)

I went in for my first appointment, and based on LMP, should have been 7 weeks. The doc did a transvag sono and found the sac and yolk, but no heartbeat. Measurements put me at 6w1d. He took some blood, and said when the results come in, he'd call to discuss next steps/schedule the next appointment. Since I was caught off guard at the sono, I didn't ask him about timing for blood results. Instead, I sent an email to the office, and they replied that results would take 5 - 10 days to come in, but that I could call them if I don't hear from them.

Given this is basically determining the viability of my pregnancy, doesn't 5 - 10 days seem long to get results back? I want to call the office to inquire, but have never been in this type of situation, and don't want to seem annoying to the office. But to be honest, I"m worried because he didn't want to schedule a follow up appointment so that makes me feel like this is not a good situation. I'd really like to hear what others would do in this situation. Should I call the office? Ask for another sono next week? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't stress. You might have Ovulated later than you thought. Based on my LMP I would have been 8 weeks preggo, but I know I ovulated later and was showing at 6 weeks. When is your next appointment? I would ask for another sono in a week, when you would be 7w.

Thanks for your response. The issue is, he didn't want to schedule my next appointment until the blood results come in. So since results can take up to 10 days, that feels like a long time to wait in limbo. I think I will take your advice and ask for another sonogram next week.

Don't worry about being 'annoying' to the office. I've learned that persistence is key and in these kinds of situations they should be understanding of that. I don't really know what kind of bloodtest you're getting that takes THAT long!! 2 years ago I went for a 6wk sono (I was measuring for that timeframe) but within the sac was no HB. My OB wasn't very concerned since that's still kind of early to find one, and she went on to schedule me for my 8wk when we'd check again. Sadly, just a few days later I began to bleed and eventually did lose that one. But I didn't get any bloodwork beforehand or NOT schedule an appointment 'just in case'. The fact that you could have ovulated later than you thought, that 6wks isn't guaranteed to find a HB, your OB should have scheduled you another one in a week or two. If you don't want to ask for another sono, then I'd at least start calling every day once 5 days hits because sometimes offices stink with calling patients back. And I'd request a sono around that point. Hopefully you'll find the HB then. I've had to go completely out of character for myself and become phone stalker quite a few times with Dr offices. It's always paid off. Chat Icon

I was in a similar situation and my dr had me come in every week to do a sono until we finally found the hb

I had a similar situation (and am almost 30 weeks now). We had a small sac and no yolk at the first sono. They took blood work in the office and asked me to repeat it 48 hours later in a lab. They marked it STAT so that I wouldn't have to wait so long to get the results back, and I got the results back the next day by phone. Once they saw the numbers doubling, the doc called me to come in the following week for a sono. Can they at least repeating the blood work to make sure your numbers are doubling?

I wouldn't take no for an answer... I have a history of early losses, so that's why I'm so pushy. It doesn't sound like they are checking for anything that really has to do with the viability of the pregnancy, just regular pregnancy bw, but not like progesterone or beta - neither of those take that long, those both come back if not the same day then the next day.

In my patient portal, it does show a pending test for progesterone and another for HCG quant. Is the latter one the beta test?

Yes, btu those don't take 5-10 days, those take 1 day, MAX.

Yep, 1 day max. And if they're doing a beta, it really should be repeated 48 hours later to see if it's doubling.

The nurse you spoke to probably gave you a typical "5-10 days answer" but that's not for betas, that's for other lab results.

Re: WWYD - Blood work in early pregnancy

Hi,
So a similar thing happened this pregnancy with me. I went in based on my LMP, thinking I was 7 weeks 3 days and they told me based on the sono I was 6 weeks 3 days.

I was kind of freaking out because of a previous miscarriage.

My doc took blood, but then made me come back 2 weeks later to check on it. I was on date then with growth, but a few weeks later I was measuring more in line with LMP (only 4 days behind vs a week).

I didn't hear anything from them in between that time, and didn't go back for additional blood work. I think my doc's view is that at that early point, whatever is meant to be is meant to be.
Only time would tell.

It's very stressful, trust me, but if you are feeling preg symptoms, that should give you some reassurance. (When I had a miscarriage, I had no preg symptoms like nausea...)

Hope that helps. Don't worry.

I would call again....and again.

Something similar happened to me this pregnancy. I got a + HPT and had no idea how far along I was because I had just stopped nursing and still hadnt gotten my period. They did bloodwork and a sono... my levels were high, but the sac was empty. At that point, they told me that I had a blighted ovum and to come back in a week. I went back and the sac was still empty. He said the if I didn't pass it on my own within the week, come back and schedule a D&C. I went back a week later to schedule my surgery and to do one last sono. WELLLL... just as he was doing he routine sono and talking me about the surgery, there was my little bean, heartbeat and all! It turns out I was just way earlier than we thought, even though my HCG was really really high. I'm no almost 24 weeks along.

You could just be way earlier than you think! Demand more blood and a sono! Good luck!!!

I had another sono today, and everything is fine! (phew). Saw the little bean, and saw/heard the heartbeat. Evidently, I ovulated or implanted a little late, which makes sense since I realize that my cycles range anywhere from 31 - 36 days.

Thanks again for all of the advice on this though!
