Glucose test spin off Q: Fasting when nauseous/sick
My paperwork for one-hour glucose test says to fast for 12 hours. I'm still nauseous and getting sick at 27.5 weeks. It's way worse on an empty stomach. Because of the fasting part, I need to go first thing in the am, so that really means Saturdays because DH is home to watch the kids. I tried to go this past weekend, but I was throwing up Friday night and Saturday morning because of the empty stomach. I even took a unisom, which usually helps. I couldn't imagine drinking that drink while feeling that sick. I am trying again this Saturday. I really have to get it done as I'll be 28 weeks on Monday. Has anyone been in this situation? Any tips? Is there a non-fasting version of the test? My doctor just said "do the best you can."

My test didn't require fasting. I ate a normal breakfast that morning. I am unsure why the instructions vary so much from Doctor to doctor and lab to lab. It's the same test! It makes no sense to me

Re: Glucose test spin off Q: Fasting when nauseous/sick
My doc with DD1 told me I didn't have to fast, so I ate a low sugar breakfast. I ended up failing that one and having to take the dreadful 3 hour test. So now I'm scared to eat first.
ETA: But 12 hours seems extreme to me. I want to say last time it was nothing after midnight. If I go at 7 am, I technically have to stop eating by 7 pm. That's hard with MS!

Can you check with the lab? My doctor has given me different instructions about fasting with the 1 hour than the lab in the past. I checked the lab's website this time and fasting isn't required for the 1 hour. I'm not sure if there's any issue with eating shortly before the test vs. eating within a few hours of the test.
I hate the drink and it's a struggle to get it down even when I'm feeling ok. I can't imagine having to take it while you're still so sick. I hope your second attempt works. Good luck!

I ate a hard boiled egg and a cheese stick prior.
But I hear if you are going to fail, it won't matter what you ate before.
I just didn't want to "falsely" skew anything so I ate all protein

Glucose test spin off Q: Fasting when nauseous/sick
I do my test next week and I was told to fast for only one hour before the test. Mine is at 3:00 p.m. so they said just to make sure I have a light lunch that day. I would call your doctor.

My doctor didn't require fasting either- I ate a normal breakfast, but didn't eat anything once I drank the drink.

The 1-hour test is not fasting. The 3-hour test is fasting.

I didn't eat before my 1 hr - not on purpose but just because it was first thing in the am and I don;t generally eat that early and I still failed.
So fasting or not I feel like if you are going to fail you probably will. I would just eat little bits and take the test.

My office gave me a sheet for one hour that says fast for 12 hours. It seems crazy, but nurse said they require it.

I survived! I went on Saturday morning. I didn't get sick while fasting this time or after drinking the drink. Phew! I didn't fast for a full 12 hours as directed--closer to 8. Hopefully I passed.
