1st grade and HW

how many days does your 1st grade get homework and what does it generally consist of?

DD so far has had 1 Math worksheet and 1 "tell me about this picture" worksheet.

Just curious what other 1st graders have?

TIA

Re: 1st grade and HW

Same set up as in K for us.

We get the homework on Monday and it's due back on Friday.

She has it broken down by the day- a math and an ELA sheet on Monday, a math and an ELA sheet on Tuesday, etc.

But you can break it down any way you want- as long as you send it all back on Friday. Which is good because some days we dont' have a lot of time. So I can skip a day of homework and double up the day before or after.

It's pretty basic right now.
This was the first week of homework and she has gotten home sheets that have her writing a letter and coloring objects that start with that letter, circling the letter from a bunch of others etc. It's pretty much like a K review at this point. Very easy.
I am sure it will get harder as it goes on.

Haven't gotten math HW yet- their math workbooks are late coming in so we couldn't do the math homework for the week yet

So far it doesn't look excessive at all. 1 math and 1 ELA sheet per day.

No homework on Fridays

Re: 1st grade and HW

in our school it depends on the teacher.

DS got the hard teacher so he gets a minimum of 3 homework sheets a night. We know what the homework is for each day at the beginning of the week, but the kids are not ALLOWED to skip ahead Chat Icon

his friends is in in the same school but a different class and barely gets any homework.

Re: 1st grade and HW

My son was in 1st grade last year, and he usually had a math worksheet every night (M-Th), and spelling homework Monday through Wed. Monday would be writing each of the 10 spelling words 3 times each, Tuesday would be writing 5 sentences using the first 5 spelling words -- the first 5 would be "new" words and the second 5 were "review" from the previous week), and Wednesday would be putting the first 5 spelling words in alphabetical order. Then Thursday, he would have some other sort of writing worksheet (like a "reading response sheet" that would require writing a couple of sentences to describe a book he read and drawing a picture). And then a reading log (20 mins of reading each night Monday through Thurs).

So basically, one math sheet, some kind of language arts (spelling/writing assigment), and 20 mins of reading every night. Depending on what the assignments were, the written work would usually take about 30 mins or so, maybe 40 if it was a lot of writing.

Re: 1st grade and HW

DS was in first last year.

They had 10 spelling words
- M - write each word 3x
- T - ABC order
- W - 1-5 in sentences & a picture
- Th - 6-10 in sentences & a picture
- F - test

Math - 1-2 sheets front and back per night

Reading - 15 mins of reading every night

There would also be once a month reading and writing a little report on one of the 7 habits.

There was more here & there, but this was the bulk of it.

Re: 1st grade and HW

My son is asked to read a short book that is sent home 2-3 times a week. Takes him 5 minutes. They also have a writing assignment due on fridays. They are given a topic sentence and need to write 2-3 more sentences. That's it. HW for 1st grade in our school is now mostly optional. The kids have access to a math website and a reading one. They can do as much or as little as they want. We do none.

DD really hasn't gotten much yet but this is what I remember from when DS had her teacher. This plus her guided reading book with a sentence about it.

Re: 1st grade and HW

I teach 1st grade. As a district, we are no longer doing formal spelling tests...we use the fundations program to teach phonics so we focus on a skill and do weekly check ups and a unit test at the end of the unit (these don't go home but guide our instruction). Since we don't have spelling words, we chose to eliminate formal spelling homework.
We now give a packet of activities for phonics that is due at the end of the unit, a math page each night, 20 minutes of reading a night, and two reading responses a week. Math is due each day, but the responses are due on Friday and the packet about every 2-3 weeks.

Re: 1st grade and HW

For first grade my dd had math sheets M-Th. M-W she had different spelling assignments. They could pick alphabetical order, bubble letters, sentences, cutting pictures out of magazines, letter frequency chart, writing the words in different colors, and a few other ways that escape me now. Spelling and math were differentiated. So Dd would receive advanced math sheets. Spelling was not advanced but not slow either. Some kids got advanced spelling words. On Mondays Dd would receive a writing assignment that was due on Thursdays. She was in the advanced writing group called writers workshop. So not every kid had the same writing assignments. She also had to read 10 minutes a night. Occasionally she would get books sent home to read. She also had speech homework.

Now in second grade she reads a minimum of 15 minutes a night and so far has a math sheet M-TH. Spelling will be differentiated again. She will also have writing assignments soon too.

Re: 1st grade and HW

In 1st grade, DS has usually a sheet or 2 (front and back) of math every night. Then he was supposed to read for 15mins and write down each night what he read (so annoying - his teacher this year said she was trusting the kids would read every night!! DS always does as it's bedtime routine so, that's easy for us!)
Last year he also had a reading response journal - he'd have to pick one book he read that week and write 3-5 sentences about the book. Also annoying because he HATES to write. And then he was supposed to study his spelling words and write them down.
This year he gets the math, reading response journal and every night he's supposed to do a "spelling activity" with his spelling list for the week. Seems better than last year. (for ALL of us!!Chat Icon )

Re: 1st grade and HW

He has HW M-TH nights.

So far it has been 2 pages of Math, 15 minutes of reading and this week spelling was added to the above. He also has spelling tests on Fridays, so we have to practice those each night as well.

Last night he had to write 10 words 3x's each. Tonight is write the words highlighting the vowels in one color and the consonants in another.

Re: 1st grade and HW

In 1st grade, DS was expected to read at least 20 minutes every night. He probably had worksheets at least 2 or 3 times per week, but I don't think he had homework sheets every night. I think he eventually was expected to start practicing math facts too. Homework picked up a bit more in 2nd grade.

Re: 1st grade and HW

Yeah for us it's not too overwhelming unless I don't keep up with it and then she has to do 2 assignments in one night and I can see her getting restless with it.

I also tend to slack on the "15 min of reading each night"

Yeah, I'm a bad mom!
