Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
IMO..it is illegal and wrong.
But i think that for the average worker...what are you going to do. The union made the decision and they HAVE to follow it...
But i dont' feel to bad since i do not think they will get fined for doing so

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
I think it's ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous...
All the years and money I spent on being educated to do my job...I probably make less and pay more for my health insurance.
I'm about ready to strike

I personally think that this is really ridiculous. They could have kept negotiating while providing service to the public. This is a public service that affect millions of users and have the city lose millions of dollars....and businesses will definitely suffer from this.
The issues that they do not want to give in for are totally senseless to me. They are paying a fine of $25000 for each employee...why not give each employee that money instead of going on strike...........
The $25,000 fine is being charged to each striking TWU employee, it's not being paid by the city.
The MTA has no motivation to really negotiate because they had the union up against the wall. The TWU can only accept what ever is offered or break the law. Unfortunately, that's what they did. And it seems they did it for the next generation of transit workers. I think the strike is purely to save face -- the executive board feels like they have something to prove and this is the only way they can.
I personally would love to get a 3% raise, pay only 1% of my health insurance and be able to retire at 55.

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
I'm more sympathetic toward the workers. These are not the wealthy few, they're blue collar workers who will tremendously suffer with the 2 days pay for 1 day out rule. But, I have to believe that given those consequences, they must feel very strongly that what they were offered is not right.

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
I don't know too much how great a total deal it is but I do know that they were reporting that the MTA made a big push at the end by agreeing to 55 and not 62 but asked for more $ contribution. So i think the MTA was bargaining in good faith.
MY ISSUE is that there are many workers who go weeks even years without a contract (which i think is unjust) and they don't go out on strike. Firemen, Policemen, teachers, professors...and they do this three days after their contract expires. Please I find that to be totally wrong. All pay increases would be retroactive which means they would get paid....now they are being forced to pay fines and whatnot.
ETA - They are also reporting that the international union does not support this strike. That says A lot too. I think the TWU wil collapse because of this.

I understand that is TWU paying the fine for their employees and not the city. Still the city is losing money because the revenues from businesses and other types of revenues are not going to be there....and add now that the holidays are here.....it's costly. I said that the TWU should have given that fine money to their employees. They still have to pay for it since they broke the law....so why not give it to their employees instead of going on strike? It really puzzles me.
Sorry, I misuderstood your post and couldn't tell which they was the mta and which they was the twu.
I didn't realize the TWU was paying their penalties as well as the personal fines being imposed to the workers. That makes the strike even worse IMO and goes back to my original reply about saving face.

i agree.... along with the HEALTHCARE WORKERS...
Now that would be interesting if they went out on strike
THEY are grossly underpaid, over worked and some don't even have the great benefits that TWU has ALREADY.

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
I was listening to NY1 yesterday and they had a city nurse call in.. she said their contract ended and did they go on strike? NO!!!! I think this is a total joke, this is not a strike, this is blackmail... I have no sympathy for these people since noone cares that I cant get to work and earn my living and hell I know there are people worse off than me that have problems getting to work...

I HIGHLY doubt anyone will be paying any fines at all... Once they do come to an agreement the fines will most like be amnestied

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
I do feel for the transit workers. I really doubt that they wanted to strike, but crossing a picket line is not a good alternative.
As a teacher who worked for a couple years without a contract, I believe that the TWU would have gone indefinitely without one if they did not strike. The UFT did not have the balls to strike and our president sold us out. Why should the TWU have to work without a contract? No union worker should, IMO.
ETA: Because of the Taylor Law, those workers WILL be paying the fines- I will be shocked if they don't. The last time the NYC teachers went out they paid fines up the wazoo.

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
Right now I feel inconvenienced more than anything - aggravated too.
I was listening the news last night and someone mentioned that most of the people who went on strike in the 80s are no longer working for the MTA so most of the current employees under the TWU seem to not know the hardship it caused for those people back then. I really am baffled by the willingness to hand over $25,000 in addition to the two days pay for each day on strike. That's a lot of money. I can't help but wonder how they will be better off in the end - it seems like this will hurt more than anything. If a person makes $40,000 annually a 3% increase would be $1,200 but 2 days pay is equal to about $317. I don't know. Not to mention that if the union is paying the $25,000 (for 30,000 + employees) that they are going to try to recoup the money in some way - I'm thinking increasing union dues down the line.

is there a picket line to cross? And if so to do what?
IMO workers are FORCED to do what the union decides... They have no choice in the matter

Actually, I was thinking about that this morning- I guess it would not be an option since one person can't operate a subway. In the case of teachers (if the schools were open during a strike) there would be a picket line.

I just don't agree in a total strike 3 DAYS after your contract expires. And there are a lot of other things they could of done before going on a total strick...like only buses going on strike, a slow down or whatnot.
What also bothers me they could not wait till after the holidays. They ask for us to understand and stand by them??? Yet they are not willing to wait an extra week and maybe help the city not lose millions more that they will with the holidays....

That's exactly what happened to us in Queens a year or so ago when Queens Surface went on strike (back then they were private). When they returned the fare for the express bus went from $4 to $5. $5 dollars to ride an old putt-putt bus that has no AC in the summer and no heat in the winter.
As you can tell - still bitter over that one.

you can tell I am really ticked off and it is not only because of the strike... the G train that I take each morning has to be the worse line in New York... I call it "ghost train"... sometimes you see it sometimes you dont... when you take the train it has only 4 cars for the thousands that take it each morning, it is a total joke!!!

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
I do feel for the workers, the conditions they work in are not as nice as sitting in front of computer. As far a timing, the city always has lots of tourist, there would never be a good time for this. The workers don't want to strike, it's the union who made the decision. As for the crappy trains and prices of fares, that's the MTA's fault, no the union. I think the MTA should be a little wiser with it's money, did the 1million surplus really help any of us.
