Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
The best part of it all was watching the news.
A CBS reporter handed the microphone over to a striker on the picket line. At first they talked about how the latest MTA deal will ask them to cut back on their pension to 62.
The funny thing is the reporter then asked him "So how do you feel that people in the private sector either don't get retirement benefits and if they do... they are lucky to get it at 62 years".
The idiot MTA employee said something stupid like "Yeah... this is why we are striking... we have to feed our families".
Are you f'in DENSE? The reporter is basically making fun of you saying if people in the private sector can do it at 62... SO CAN YOU!
It went right over the MTA employee's head. What a MORON!

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
I think the MTA should clean up some of their working conditions- but lets face it- people CHOSE to work for the MTA - no one held a gun saying you MUST work for the MTA and work in those conditions. With that said, they should be safe.
However- I think that the current offer was fair- and the whole strike came to 6% pension contributions by workers is BS.
As I said before- they are lucky to have a pension at all- most pension obligations are grossly underfunded- and god forbid the MTA (or any other government organization) bankrupts and forfeits the pensions- a lot more people would be up the creek. Seems to me they can't see the forest through the trees.
If it could be done, I think they should get fired... harsh as it may be, there are plenty of people who would take the job, the benefits and the retirement age as the offer stands.

I heard there is a WAITING LIST for people to get jobs in the MTA cause the benefits are so good.
These people get no sympathy from me.
And I betcha more than 3/4 of the people that work for the MTA are against this strike. I know my buddy talked to at least 10 MTA employees on the bus ride home yesterday. They were all against the strike and never voted for Roger Toussant in the first place. Two of them even said they would take a shotgun to him if they had an opportunity.

There is a MAJOR difference here.
Most private sector jobs will employ a 401k or a 403b retirement plan. This is a plan that YOU contribute to... it comes out of your paycheck. Maybe if you are lucky... your employer will donate some money into it on your behalf... but its not a "pension". You also can't tap into your 401k until you turn 62.
The MTA pension plan is similar to what the cops and firemen get. You don't have to pay a DIME to it. Once you hit 55... you get a pension paycheck for the rest of your LIFE. For the cops... its typically half your salary after working for the job for 20 years.

Is having the innocent suffer really the objective here? Are we a means to an end?
IMO tha tis WRONG
I don't think making the innocent suffer is an objective. It's an unfortunate consequence of the conflict. The union feels the MTA has been bargaining in bad faith. The MTA is the one with the power. When you're in a service industry, and you want to gain bargaining power, one of the most effective ways to get this is to stop providing the services. What would you do if you were in these workers' position? If you were an MTA employee who was without a contract and felt that the MTA's offer was unfair, wouldn't you consider striking?
Well IMO it is a means and it is wrong
Just like if the people with whom i work ... If they were to strike a lot of people would feel that consequence...the disabled...
But should that be ok ....? Since they are underpaid...IMMENSELY
Health care workers have gone on strike all over the country. Teachers also go on strike. Everyone suffers from a strike. In this instance, millions of people are affected. Is it right to go on an illegal strike? No and the union and employees will suffer the consequences. However, I don't think it's fair for any public employees to continue to work without a contract, and I think more could've been done on both sides to prevent this. I hope both sides make a bigger effort to reach an agreement. If they don't, maybe the mayor and govenor can get involved to try to push for an end to this.

Realistically... whats the big deal about working without a contract?
Its not like their benefits STOP if there is no contract. They said they were without a contract for over two years... they certainly aren't crying poverty.

Re: Post Your Feelings About the Strike.....
both of my parents work nights as machine operators in a factory, my mom has to pick up some parts that are so heavy her hand is hurting her now and she is only 50... they have to work until 62 and they are not complaining... they would gladly take some of these jobs but probably would have a hard time getting it... give me a freaking break... both of them probably earn less than one person working for MTA (read that average is 54,000)... it just kills me and really pisses me off... get your asses to work!!!!

If they don't have a contract, their wage continues to stay the same. With a contract, they'd probably get wage increases, which helps to offset inflation and the increase in the cost of living. I assume most people get raises at their job, whether it's based on merit or length of time at their job. These employees don't have that benefit without a contract.

That's not correct. They currently pay 2% to their pension plan and cops, firemen and teachers all pay some as well. It's not a ton but in the end, that is often why people choose civil service jobs over private industry. You may never make as much but your benefits are pretty damn nice.
And to answer your question MrsProfessor, no, we do not have a retirement plan in the private sector. When I retire I will have no health insurance nor will I receive a pension. Any $ I have will have been saved and invested by me in the form of a 401K and any other investments/savings I may choose to contribute to. Those days are loooooooong past. I don't know of a single company that still pays out retirement benefits to newer employees (some are grandfathered in, like my mom was).

And that s*cks. So why would you want MORE unions to go thru this instead of less? If it s*cks for one, I don't see why it has to s*ck for all. TWU is in the best position to strike - it affects the lives of millions yet only in inconvenient ways. By them striking, they're not endangering the lives of others as a health care worker strike would or a police department or fire department strike would. It's annoying, it s*cks - believe me, I know - it took me an hour and 50 minutes to do what is normally a 40 minute commute this morning and tonght will be worse. But at the end of the day, I truly believe that if the workers came to this decision, knowing the consequences, they must feel very strongly about this contract.

I didn't know that- I assumed a 401(k) was similar to a pension since it's intended for retirement. And I do have a pension but I also pay 4% into it- none of it is funded by the city.

At Will employees get paid on very different scaled and have different regulations for raises than a union employee does - we don;t need a contract that states what our raise will be ...
They don't get pensions, most people in the pricate sector get 401k's ... money they themselves contribute ... do you know of any public company that still gives out pensions (to someone our age not grandfathered of course?)
We pay for health insurance, they never did.

I don't think retro pay is any great incentive to work without a contract- I just got a retro check and *half* was taken out in taxes. I don't know how it will work out at tax time, if I'll get some of it back, but I wish I'd had it all along.

When I say "they" i mean the union people. IF they work without a contract it's not like the penions, $ and health insurance stops for them.

You're assuming that the MTA and union will actually reach an acceptable agreement. The idea of retroactive pay is great, but if the MTA refuses to offer a wage/benefit package that the union believes is fair, there won't be a contract for years. What good is retroactive pay if there's no guarantee the sides will reach an agreement?

not as an incentive, but as a reminder that the $$ they're fighting for to 'feed their families' will still wind up in their pockets in the long run.
wouldn't the $$ taken out in taxes come out the same if it were broken up between checks?
