I feel bad for the workers, but I think this strike is SO wrong. The MTA employees get FAR BETTER benefits than I do, and I don't get a pension. I have a 401-k that comes out of MY salary, as does my health insurance benefits. These workers made a choice when they chose to work for the MTA. Everyone's job has things about it that sux but you sukl it up and deal.
It's called "work", not play.

I don't understand why people are stating whether they believe the MTA offer is fair by comparing their own jobs to the MTA employees' jobs/benefits. I think we should compare what the MTA employees had and what the MTA is offering before deciding what is fair. While many people work until 62 and beyond, the MTA employees only worked until 55. Now, the MTA wants them to work until 62. The employees also did not have to contribute to their pensions or health care, and now they'd be expected to contribute. These are great benefits that the MTA is trying to reduce. While many of us would still be happy with the benefits offered by the MTA, these are major changes for the MTA workers. I can understand why the workers were not jumping at the MTA's offer.

MTA was willing to leave the pension at 55.....they still walk out......

In return, the MTA demanded that workers contribute 6% of their salary for 10 years towards their pension. This was unacceptable to the union.

When I first started working, I did not have to contribute to health care. My employer went to the employees and said the health care raised by this % - in order to still offer it to you, you need to contribute. While I appreciate what the union does for employees- they had a good deal- and now they blew it.

While I understand it sort of stinks that they now have to contribue more to health insurance- in the face of everything that is going on- I do think it fair.

Plus- I also think the union isn't being realistic- they aren't looking at the entire financial picture- they just see a surplus for 1 year and think that it will be EVERY year- what about when all those pensions come do? There isn't enough $$$ to cover them all- then what will happen? God forbid the MTA eventually bankrupts- then what? No pension. But instead of thinking about all that- they figure they'll strike. B/C they don't want future employees to pay in 6%- big whoop.

It just seems that the union is not willing to compromise where you own arguments show that the MTA is...

The MTA gave up something and made an additional demand. How is that compromising?

The union was willing to accept lower wage increases if the MTA made some of their disciplinary policies less strict. Both sides are willing to give in a little. They just need to figure out if their bottom lines overlap or else there's no room (or point) to bargain.

Its negotiating.. you want to retire at 55, then have the (and I believe it only new) employees contribute to their pension. Maybe its the news coverage, but I don't see where the unoin has compromised.

Since we're not at the bargaining table, we really don't know what each side has compromised on. We don't know what the MTA can afford to give, and we don't know what the union is willing to give up. The union has been trying to get the MTA to bargain with them for months, but nothing was really done until the last minute. Perhaps all of this could've been avoided if both sides were serious about negotiating from the start.

Hey Shelly.... did you hear the Union's excuse as to why they do NOT want to allow the new workers to have the crappy pension benefits?

Because years down the road when the current officers who won't be officers anymore and will be ready to retire.... will be given up and fed out to the wolves by all the former "new employees" that got screwed today.

LOL... i can see a good point to that.

Not only that, but if they screw the new workers now, the new workers may band together and vote these officers out of the union or maybe even vote to eventually get rid of the union. Unions typically face the dilemma of whether to bargain on issues that meet the interests of its young or older members.
