I'm not sure how I feel about them being charged. I know many parents who have waited a week before seeing a pediatrician for symptoms that they didn't think were severe.
I agree. I wouldn't doubt if there's more to the story. I wonder what the autopsy will reveal.

I do NOT think they should be sterilized. I don't believe the government has a right to get their hands on our reproductive organs. Not to tell me that I can't have an abortion and not to tell me that I can't have children.
That said.. I'm not against them losing their rights to make health decisions for their children.
I read this story yesterday and my very first thought was they shouldn't have any more kids...
I 100% agree that the government has no right to our reproductive organs, so to that I agree they shouldn't be sterilized...
However I hope to God... He doesn't allow them any more children...and that where their other children are now is a safe place... away from parents who won't get them medical treatment when its needed..
I understand faith...but faith that kills your kids - I'll never understand.

At some point maybe God answered their payers and said "Take your kid to a doctor", like when the first kid died!
Blind faith and common sense can work together. IMO doctors are agents of God and are here for a reason. I hate when religions try and make these kinds of decisions for people and will never undersatnd how people can just watch their kid(s) die in the name of God while they sit and pray. Pray for some God given sense next time!

Someone I'm related to died because apparently he also shared this belief. He prayed. He's dead. Good job, fool.
I don't understand how someone that religious could think doctors and medicine as it is today could NOT have come from God in the first place. If you believe that deeply, don't you believe that God had a hand in it all?
I PRAY they have no more children to watch die.

ITA. The thought alone of the gov't having power to do that is frightening. But something needs to be done- their other kids/potential future kids (I can't remember reading if they had any other kids now) should not be punished because these people were brainwashed or had good intentions.
Also, you bring up that the difference between Al Qaeda and this couple is they are not interfering with other people's lives, people with differing beliefs- but a child is just too young to have a differing belief as of yet and they are the ones who paid. It's a sad situation all around and definitely has the potential to become a legal nightmare, but some precautions need to be made and I don't think medical education alone will cut it. These people are brainwashed, they need mental health care.

See.. I think they are misguided. I admire their fortitude, their absolute faith.. but I do believe that they are following the thought of MEN not God. God provides – sometimes in the form of miracles, sometimes in the form of medicine, sometimes in the form of a person who appears in your life in just the right time. The bible has a million passages that can be interpreted to mean that faithful do not need doctors or medicine – but people forget that these passages are taken from texts written in long dead languages and have been interpreted and re-interpreted by MEN over and again.
Either way.. I think it’s a tragic. My heart breaks for them and I hope they are able to heal from their losses.
I agree with this.. wholeheartedly.

my first thought, too.
i am a christian and i KNOW that prayer heals; it has worked for me. but i also believe/trust that God gave us the ability to learn and because of that we have science and medicine.
poor babies. i hope they're at peace.

I could not agree more. I have ZERO sympathy or understanding for parents, regardless of their beliefs, that let a baby suffer to death.

What I cant reconcile is this:
At some point you have to see that you child is NOT responding to the prayer.
At some point the parents HAD to know, HAD TO KNOW, that this baby was suffering, and dying.
They HAD to know that.
So they decided that they should pray harder?
Or, it was ok? Like, if god *didnt* answer the prayer, than it was this kids time to die.
This is what happened in the 1700 and 1800 when there wasnt medicine.
Oh yeah, and then theer is this:
"Other 7 kids in the house, come on over. Your baby brother is suffering, and probably going to die, so we all need to prayer harder to god to cure the baby. If YOU dont pray hard enough, this kid is going to die, so its on all of us as a family. Oh and by the way, just stand here and watch the kid deteriorate. Pray, but watch him suffer because you are not praying hard enough. "

This is no religion.
I highly doubt they would blame the kids for not praying hard enough. You are making assumptions here and they are rude. Don't agree that's fine, don't understand that's fine too, but to say this is just wrong. Many people I know believe that if it's your time it's your time and not praying hard enough never enters into it.
Again Jehovah's Witness' have protection under the law. Why not these people?

I don't know this family or their particular sect.. but my understanding of some fundamentalist sects would indicate that they truly believe that the child will be healed by prayer - or will die because God has elected to take the life. They do not necessarily see it as an 'unanswered' prayer - they see it as 'God's choice'. They asked, he answered.. unfortunately his answer was "No".
It's sad. I hope that poor baby did not suffer too terribly.

I think they probably truly believe this. It's almost like the Duggar family- they just keep having kids, no matter how dangerous it is, because they feel if it does happen, it must be God's will. So if their child is sick and dies, it must be God's will. But that's unreasonable and actually delusional to me.

As to a PP, do you not think that their other 7 kids may feel THEY didnt pray hard enough?
If these people do believe that prayer cures, then they are teaching thier other children this as well.
If they are teaching their other children this, then dont we all think the OTHER kids might feel that they did something wrong? If they prayed harder, or better, or longer that MAYBE god would have saved the baby?
Im NOT saying the parents (or authorities) blame the otehr kids.
Im saying they will blame themselves for not praying enough, harder, better, longer......
I stand behind this.

DING DING DING! I didn't mean that the U.S government should start sterlizing unfit parents. Not to mention that would never happen.
I meant to express my disgust that people like this can have children. 2 wasted lives already.
And there are so many people out there who would be good parents and can't have children at all.
Disgusting and unfair in my eyes.

I agree faith heals mind but it doesn't cure physical ailments and the parents should have brought the kid to a doctor when his condition was not improving.
