I think if you are an adult who thinks this about yourself, fine. Pray away. But when the decision you make impacts another persons life, one who doesn't have the voice to state whether they want this or not, the government should be able to force you to treat, especially if the illness would result in death otherwise.

This is neglect - If youir child can't BREATHE you don't go to Church and pray - you take the suffering child to a doctor - this disgusts me.
You want to live on blind faith as an adult? Knock yourself out, but your innocent children who can't care for themselves shouldn't die b/c you have your head up your a$$ ---

I agree. I can't imagine watching my 8 month old starve to death and cry when there was something I could do about it. These people are sick and should not be able to have anymore children.

Again Jehovah's Witness' have protection under the law. Why not these people?
I believe Jehovah's Witnesses are only against blood transfusions. They are not against medicine as a whole. I think that is the big difference. These are parents who use prayer as the ONLY option.
I just can't imagine watching not one, but TWO of my children suffer like that.
I agree with a PP who mentioned it, I think at the very least health care proxy needs to be transferred to another family member.

I agree faith heals mind but it doesn't cure physical ailments and the parents should have brought the kid to a doctor when his condition was not improving.
Personally, I believe in God's healing power (of both mind and body) and also believe in the healing power of medicine.
It's common sense that if a child is sick, you take them to a doctor. Obviously these people were not playing with a full deck.
I am curious as to why you would assume that because I believe in God's healing power, that I would condone the parent's choice not to seek medical treatment.

I am not in favor of government sterilization. I do think these people need to go to jail for child abuse and neglect. They are unfit parents. May those children rest in peace. I am sorry for them. However I have mixed feelings about it. There are circumstances where I could see a parent declining care for a terminally ill child (at birth or at some point with a horrible terminal illness). But for a preventable childhood illness where medicine can cure someone, yes, this is neglect and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

See.. I think they are misguided. I admire their fortitude, their absolute faith.. but I do believe that they are following the thought of MEN not God. God provides – sometimes in the form of miracles, sometimes in the form of medicine, sometimes in the form of a person who appears in your life in just the right time. The bible has a million passages that can be interpreted to mean that faithful do not need doctors or medicine – but people forget that these passages are taken from texts written in long dead languages and have been interpreted and re-interpreted by MEN over and again.
Either way.. I think it’s a tragic. My heart breaks for them and I hope they are able to heal from their losses.
I agree 100% If these people REALLY believed that praying would save their child thats not neglect, at least in their eyes and hearts. Christian Science also doesn't believe in medical intervention and their rights are protected. Why not these people? It's tragic and awful. I hope the child didn't suffer but calling for these people do be sterilized and shot is barbaric.

And they weren't put in jail the first time because they had 7 other kids to "take care of"?? They weren't doing a very good job "taking care of" them, IMO, since one of them DIED!!!!

Something about this story is VERY shady. What is the chances that THREE children in the same family would be so gravely ill in their first few years of life that they needed medical attention to live? I have two kids and I don't think this has ever been the case in their lives (they are 3 and 5) - oh wait, with the exception of my son having Strep once.

It should have never been probation it should of been 10 years of supervision from CPS.
Also, if it was required by probation your child gets regular check ups how come the last they know about is at 8 weeks old? Over 6 months lapsed with no reporting agency following up on this? Most probation is a weekly or at least twice a month visit/check in.
I'm not that religious so I cannot speak on faith and what not but on the legal side of it I feel like once was enough and there should of been some closer eyes on the family after being charged with wrongful death and being sentenced to 10 years! I know people that have been on probation for minor infractions and have had the county up their arse the whole term!

Yup. I'll admit to having a hard time relating from the start because I'm not very religious. As a mother, I just cant imagine this. If you believe it's in God's hands, okay fine. Take the kid to see a doctor & if its truly God's will that he doesn't survive, then nothing a doctor could do would change that, no?

Disgusting people and should definitely be charged with child abuse, neglect, and manslaughter. To lallow two young helpless defenseless children die when it sounds like they could have been cured with basic medical attention is a crime!!

What if one of their children is choking? Are they permitted to intervene or do they believe that whatever it is will come up if it is God's will?
