me and DH lived in an illegal apt for a year and half before we got married...im not giving any details incase of lurkers - but it did the job until we bought our house!

Yes, I lived in one for a year before getting married. We could not afford an apartment in an apartment complex. We did not have loud parties, kept to ourselves, and parked in front of the house we lived in.
ETA: For those of you who would condone this, honestly think about if you tell me that you have never broken a single law. You never roll through a stop sign, never talk on your cell while driving (even on speaker phone), never smoked a joint, etc.

Most people in this situation would have to live in a less safe neighborhood to afford an apartment and all of the utilities. So you're suggesting that this is the better option?

I did, and at that time I either I pay for college or for a legar apt. Both things couldnt be budget in, at least while living in long island.

my whole thing is that yes, it is illegal and wrong but people always find out who is reporting them and i think it is VERY important to maintain a good relationship with neighbors so I would never report them, JMO.

I don't understand the issue. THIS is the risk that landlords and tenants run by having/using an illegal apartment. Be a good tenant/landlord by being mindful of the neighbors and you'll likely have no problems.
This post stemmed from another poster complaining about a landlord who is NOT being mindful of the neighbors- and in turn deserves to be reported.
Believe me- the furthest thing from my head is wasting time flushing out the "illegals" in the neighborhood. HOWEVER- if that illegal apartment is causing any issues in MY life (constantly rotating tenants, noise issues, safety issues), ESPECIALLY if it threatens my bottom line- you can bet your illegal @zz I'm reporting it.

it wasnt possible for me & DH before the wedding... and everyone's situatin is different - you dont know what goes on behind closed doors so dont be quick to judge

yes, for nearly 7 years... From the time I graduated college until I bought my house with DH. I lived upstairs from an elderly couple. They were like grandparents to me.

Yes...and Thank God for illegal apartments. When I left my ex-husband I had no money for security and no savings.
The people I rented from were so nice, they took me at face value and I paid them their security on a weekly basis and stayed in that apartment for eight years. It was my home and they were my friends.
I never understand why - especially when it's so hard to make ends meet these days - people feel the need to report an illegal apartment that is clean and quiet. I can understand if the rental is causing problems, but most really don't.

No, it's really not.
When I moved into my apartment I was making $250 take-home a week and my rent was $550 (this is a long time ago). I could never have afforded a legal apartment at the time - they were going for a minimum of $750 for the same size. That would have left me $250 to cover food, gas, insurance, etc.
Not likely.

Oh and BTW, someone did report the apartment and I had to stay at my mothers for three months while he took the place apart, had all the inspectors come to approve the apartment and put it back together. Huge aggravation for him and me....but because they were so good to me, I dealt with it.
