No and I've felt uncomfortable visiting people while they were living in them.
Seriously?!
Did you think the feds were going to bust in and put you away?
ETA: I'm not trying to be snotty- but why would you feel uncomfortable? You're neither the renter nor the landlord- therefore you're doing nothing wrong.
Unless the person you're visiting is runing an undercover meth lab in there or something- why would you feel uncomfortable?
Because I've been asked to do things like: - park a block away - not ring the doorbell - walk through the owners' family gatherings to get in/out - not make noise in certain rooms
All of which makes me feel like I'm part of something that's not on the up-and-up, which, in turn makes me feel uncomfortable.
Not to mention how I'd get out in a fire.
This is how *I* feel. Others, obviously, feel comfortable in the same situation.
Sorry I have to laugh!
I have rented illegal apartments and NEVER did I have to go through their house to go to my apartment.
I had my own entrance and space.
What you are describing is NOT a typical illegal apartment. That's a make shift of renting a room to someone.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
DH and I lived in an illegal apartment for 2 years, and we would do it again in a heartbeat.
Sure, we could have "adjusted our budget" as mentioned before...but we sure wouldn't own our house today if we did.
And I'm really not willing to compromise that. We were quiet and respectful, and I honestly don't see the problem.

What I described is a hybrid of things I've experienced from several different people with different apartments. No single place had all of those items.

How do I know if the apt we are in is legal or not?
Well a sure-fire way to know is if you paid utilities or not. If utilities were included, then it was illegal because there were no separate meters. A homeowner/landlord wouldn't willing pay your bills.
I lived in a legal apartment for 2 years, and my utilities were included in my rent.

No I haven't, BUT there is nothing that would stop me from renting one for myself or renting it out to others...sorry, everyone has to do what they have to do.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
Just moved from an illegal basement apartment into a regular complex. Judge if you will, everyone has a right to their opinions on it. DH and I needed to find a place fast, and it was the best one we could find in a price range that we could afford at that time when we needed the place. We lived there for a year and a half and finally got tired of living in a basement and now we have a new place.
Like others said, sometimes it all about your situation...we don't live fancy lifestyles and I just didn't want to get a place that was more $$ and barely get by from paycheck to paycheck....and it worked for us.

I never asked guests to park a block away. I didn't have a doorbell. We had our own separate entrance to our apartment in the back of the house. We could make as much noise as we wanted as the people who lived below us were old and deaf. In a fire, we walked out our entrance.
Most illegal apartments that I have ever been to have a separate entrance.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
We have an apartment in our basement. It has two entrances, a carbon monoxide alarm and a fire detector. There is a seperate entrace and never has our tenant had to walk though family gatherings.
We actually had tenents that were a nightmare. College kid that thought the apartment was a frat house. Our neighbor came over and spoke to us....we kicked him out. End of story.
Now we have a wonderful girl who you would never know was there. Had they reported us it would have been awful. We count on that money to pay for daycare for DD.
Judge if you must but you have no idea what our financial situation was when we bought the house or what it is now. Do I like renting a part of our house out? NO. At this point with the market the way it is now we really have no choice.
Edited for spelling

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
I never did, but I am not opposed to them - I understand the housing shortage on LI
I'm actually surprised that I never did...with all the different places - all were legal...seems odd in this area.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
Yes, but when we moved in we SPECIFICALLY asked the landlord and he told us it was legal. We believed him (b/c we did not know how to verify this at the time) and moved in. Well when we had to call the FD b/c we thought there was a gas leak, we found out that our apartment was NOT legal and we had 90 days to move. We appealled and we were allowed to stay until we found a place to live, and the day after we moved they ripped the kitchen out of our apartment and the wall down that divided the two apartments. Needless to say we were POed because we specifically asked. We did not pay rent for the remainder of our time while we were finding a house b/c he lied to us and we signed a contract with him under false pretenses.
