WOW- glad to see we have yet another noob who doesn't know how to play nice.

She respectfully doesn't agree with your opinion- why go there, because you can't handle that others don't agree with you?

it wasnt possible for me & DH before the wedding... and everyone's situatin is different - you dont know what goes on behind closed doors so dont be quick to judge

Sorry but I don't agree with this and we will respectfully disagree.

There is always a way.

well then thats a pretty sad mind frame you live in Chat Icon

she has a sad mind frame because she feels there is ALWAYS a way to fix a problem?

If anything, that's a POSITIVE mind frame. So, perhaps you feel she lacks empathy for a complete stranger on the internet she knows nothing about other than an opposing view. What's sad about that?

ahhhh the dreaded eyeroll.... really reinforces your point

its sad that she thinks everyones personal money issues and/or other issues can be worked out so they can live life in a legal apartment - yes its a very nice thought to think that they can be... very positive thinking indeed - but the REALITY is - sometimes they cant be and ppl live in illegal apartments

i can totally respect positive thinking, but its when the positive thinking just ignores the reality of other ppl's lives & almost makes people come off like they are "cutting corners" IE - illegal aprtment renters

No and I've felt uncomfortable visiting people while they were living in them.

It's tax fraud.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?

no and I never would.

I grew up in a LEGAL 2 family. My mother was a waitress & father was a truck driver. It would have been less taxes for us do to it illegally, but they actually cared about following laws.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?

Here's the deal Meesh- lets say in a few years your neighbor starts renting out an illegal. Every month there are new tenants. Different cars and people in and out of the neighborhood. To the point that you never know if that guy hanging around is your neighbor, or some stranger lurking around.

THIS is what the OP on the original thread may have been alluding to. You (and a few others) took it to a different place. This was never about the people who rented an illegal apartment for a couple years. It was about transient tenants.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?

Yup. My mother and I lived in an illegal apartment for a while. It was that or move to the projects.

And she couldn't 'adjust' her budget because she was unemployed for 18 months.. she went on something like 36 different job interviews and was turned down from all of them because no one wanted to cross-train from the old Wang computer system to windows. And when unemployment ran out, she drove car service 6 days a week, 12 hours a day just to pay the rent in that illegal apartment.

The nearest projects were full of drugs and crime and violence. She did what she had to do to give me a better life.

YES i totally agree - if that was happening i would report as well- i also said that in one of my posts

BUT my issue is that she said something about how ppl's $$ issues can always be resolved so they dont have to live illegally in an apartment - THAT i have an issue with

I'm glad I'm not the only one. It feels wrong to me to visit my BIL knowing where he lives in a nice neighborhood than ours, where he spends his weekly paycheck on buying a Wii, or a new Bass, or a new this or that....and we're struggling to make ends meet with our house, taxes, heat, etc.

He has more than enough to get a legal place, but doesn't want to.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?

I haven't but I would have.

I really don't see how this thread could have turned into this.

I completely agree unless it's affecting MY life - I wouldn't say boo about it. I could care less about the 'law breaking' aspect of it. I guess I am a terrible citizen.

You said it wasn't possible for you and DH "before the wedding".

Like I said... people have trouble separating NEEDS from WANTS. It's all about entitlement to some.

The same people that say they CAN'T adjust their budget are a lot of times the same people that spend over 10k on a wedding, lease or finance newer cars, have $100+ cable bills, and other non-essential items.

You're telling me two salaries is not enough for a legal apartment? I call ********.

Well than why drag your opinion down by being rude? The eyeroll was totally unnecessary. She has her opinion and disagreed with yours . To call her frame of mind "sad" and throw out the "eye roll" really takes the meaning out of your argument.

Unfortunately, now that I own my own home, I cannot stand to see illegal apartments. Not because of transient tenants, but from a tax paying perspective. It's infuriating.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?

my grandmother made an apartment in her house and rented it to another old lady. She didnt get the proper permits and someone called on her.

It actually WASNT that expensive to get the permits and her taxes didnt go up that much, compared to the rental income she is getting.

I didn't like the fact that she had an illegal apartment, but now when she goes to sell the house she wont have any issues.

I really dont blame the renters. I blame the homeowners for screwing their neighbors.
