Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
Posted by Gertyrae I never understand why - especially when it's so hard to make ends meet these days - people feel the need to report an illegal apartment that is clean and quiet. I can understand if the rental is causing problems, but most really don't.
I actually always wondered about it myself? Unless it hurts them in a personal way: loud parties, invasion of their property etc.. why would they care?? Who would actually get involved into something like that and why?? Besides spitefulness...
Always makes me think of the old lady who lived in our apartment complex when I was little. She would always yell at the kids for walking on grass. Was it her grass? No? What was she doing it? Because she was very very lonely and bored out of her mind and just wanted to bring some kind action into her sad little life... I felt sorry for her once I got older and realized why she was doing it...

I think....IMO, that most of us would not call a Town on a quiet illegal apt. One that caused issues, yes.
I think what we're most upset about is that the homeowners of the illegal apts are the issue who don't legalize it, and may be part of the reason for high taxes in the area. We all want to pay our fair share, not more!

THIS was the gist of the OP that this post was spun from. ONCE AGAIN.....I don't think there is ANYONE who has said, "I'd report any illegal apartment." This was about reporting an apartment that had different tenants from month to month.
I'm sorry- but being a homeowner, I don't want "new people" living in my neighborhood every month. I like to know my neighbors so we can look out for one another and keep the place safe. That's hard to do when you have a rotating door of tenants in and out of an illegal apartment.
This was never about being McGruff trying to "take a bite out of crime" b y reporting all the illegal apartments- it was about being a responsible landlord and respecting your neighbors.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
another issue that hasn't been discussed is the safety of illegal apartments.
The town doesnt send inspectors for fun (well sometimes they do ). What about fire codes? What if someone put an illegal apartment in a basement, had a fire, the firemen go in not knowing that there are rooms in the basement, get trapped and die?
who would be for illegal apartments then?

I wouldn't, and I would hope the insurance companies would drop the homeowner if a death was involved due to an illegal apt.

True dat. But, being that maintaining legals are generally more expensive than illegals (snicker), the landlords *might* tend to be more picky about who they allow in. I'd think they'd be more inclined to be "by the book" as well- with a lease agreement drawn up.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
Yes, I did because that's all I could afford.
I was knewly divorced. Hardly any money in the bank. No furniture and had just moved from another state with whataver I could pack. My car broke down just a few month after I moved to LI. I had not gotten a raise from moving from the South to LI. I bought a used car.
I first moved into a legal appt. the 1st year. It sank me to no savings!!!!! I HAD TO go into an illegal appt. I went back to school and they was just no other way. I was not going to pay $300 in gas per year to move in the middle of nowhere so far away from my job on LI.
Moving to an illegal appt saved me or at least keep my head above the water.
Then the owners sold the house and I moved to a legal appt than was very cheap in a complex. I ONLY took me 4 years to find one after I found my bearing on LI.
There is just not enough legal appts on LI to house all the tenants in illegal appts. And very few are under $1200 per month. That COMPLETELY out of my budget. It was either I had a car to drive or a legal appt. Sad reality but it's reality!!!

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
Um, roommates anyone? I've been fascinated by reading all this stuff but not once have I heard anyone mention having a roommate or two... That's the only way I've ever been able to afford an apt, and yes, I used to live paycheck to paycheck myself. Really, why haven't you guys who have "had" to live in an illegal apt. not gone to roommate route?

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
I just want to also add, that the pool of "illegal" or "legal" tenants is not limited to the people (and situations) that we encounter on this website.
I would hazard a guess that there is a smaller percentage of the population that REALLY struggled and struggle on this board than there is in "real life".
usually I form my arguments and opinions based on what I believe the reality of the world, not just people on LIF, to be.
I am not commenting either way on the subject...just thought I'd give a little food for though

hmm, I don't know if I agree with this. I have a legal apartment in my house and I almost feel like it's better for me because if someone did have a problem with it the people I rent to - I can say "well it's leagal so not much you can do about it". NOT THAT I EVER WOULD! I live in a very nice area and have and always will be respectable and mindful of my neighbors. But, I'm just saying that someone with an illegal apt has MORE of an interest in keeping the neighbors happy then someone who has it legalized. JMO!!

I am wondering about this, too.
When I couldn't afford a decent apartment on my own, I got roommates. Is this not common practice in LI?

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
I currently am but its with relatives. DH and I are poor college students so our relatives are helping us out. Our friends are paying almost $1000 for their legal and are barely holding their heads above water. We are paying alot less so we can get out of some debt and save up for a condo or house in another state. Its the best situation for us right now since its only temporary.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
I did. When I was in law school. I had a very cute apt in a really nice, safe neighborhood and my landlord was a cop. I was NEVER home so I never bothered anyone. I was there for 4 years. I parked in the driveway, never had a party and, when I was there, I was really quiet.
BUT, I can understand the frustration. I am now an owner of a legal 2 family home. The village we live in busts our chops constantly about everything they possibly can (meanwhile, my house is brand new so everything is up to code and there is nothing they can "get" us on at all...it's so stupid...the village counsel is made up of old people with too much time on their hands...I'll stop...I can go on all day about this).
Anyway, I can think of AT LEAST 4 illegal apartments that the village knows about (I know that my neighbor reported everyone) and yet they have never once confronted the owners of these homes! That to me is annoying. I don't care about my neighbors renting illegally, that doesn't bother me. It annoys me that I have been in the village's kangaroo court numerous times for b.s. that is just wasting my time when they KNOW about illegal apts in the neighborhood that they can't be bothered dealing with.

I think there are always exceptions. We had an illegal apartment with a lease and we used a real estate agent to find it. The person who lived there before us lived there for 12 years, we were there for 1 year. There was no moving in and out going on.

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
I have never knowing rented an illegal apartment
there was one I lived in when I was 21 with an ex-boyfriend- I really have no clue if it was legal or not- it was not something that crossed my mind to ask
since then I rented in NYC with a roomate
and then moved to LB into a building, then to a building in Queens- and now I rent in a 3 family house- again legal
but in all fairness- my rent has never been less then $1700- granted I lived in very nice areas- but I would not be willing to trade that

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
I've lived in three illegal apts. To me I had no clue about legal or illegal apts. Where I came from there was no such thing. When moving to LI I moved into what I found in the paper.
Fast forward to the LAST illegal apt I lived in...3 mths before my wedding I came home to a notice from the town saying all tenants had to evacuate. To be honest...we saw it coming. The stupid greedy landlord owned the house & rented ALL three floors out. We lived there from beginning to end, but in that time (2 years) there were 3 different people upstairs & 3 different people downstairs. The neighbors were very upset & honestly I can't blame them.
We were lucky enough to find a MUCH better LEGAL apt after that. We made sure it was legal!
We're now homeowners. I believe the people next door have an illegal apt & I think the people across from us have a legal apt. To be honest both apts are very quiet and keep to themselves & are also long term tenants and we would not report them, BUT...if it ended up in a situation like my previous landlord - oh heck yeah...I wouldn't think twice about it!

Re: Spin-Off: Have YOU ever lived in an illegal apartment?
YUp, DH and I lived in one when we were in college. We both worked full time bartending and waitressing while going to school full-tim paying fo tuition, books, food etc and rent. It was the only way I could afford to go to school.
I tried to get on campus housing but I couldn't apy for it...........FInancial aid at school told me to drop out of school..............that wasn't an option for me.
Was it the ideal situation, no. But we were quiet tenants that needed a place to sleep after a long day of classes and working all day..............
