Re: Is there a Making Your Own Baby Food thread?
No, but there should be!!!! Cuz I know A LOT of people on here ask so many questions and it would be nice to have one main thread
ETA - Basically everyone will give you the same advice...
wholesomebabyfood.com
All you need is a steamer (regular pot steamer) a blender (for peas and beans for the skins) and/or a food processor for big batches or magic bullet type machine for small batches.
After you steam the veggies...you can use the steamed water to mix into the puree...NOT with carrots...something about the nitrates, so that water is a no no.
Just puree up the veggies/fruits and add water to desired consistency. I would start with a little at first so you don't make it too watery. Upon defrosting it can get even more watery...so you want ot be careful.
With Apples and pears you don't need to add much, if or any water since they steam down to a very watery consistency.
As for storing, you can, but don't have to, buy food storage containers..there are many varieties. Most importantly you want a conatiner with a good lid on it ro prevent freezer burn. You can use regular ice cube trays and just put them in a ziplock freezer back when freezing.
LET FOODS COOL DOWN to room temperature before freezing to avoid bacteria growth.
After food is frozen in the trays...pop out and put cubes into a freezer bag...label and put expiration date on the bag. Foods generally expire 6 weeks from date made.

Re: Is there a Making Your Own Baby Food thread?
After you go through each veggie or fruit for the 3 day reaction rule...you can get creative and mix up your cubes.
For us, we started with orange veggies first...then green, then moved on to fruits.
You can do what you like! Get creative!

Re: Is there a Making Your Own Baby Food thread?
highly recommend making your own food. it is so easy and i'd like to think that it is nutritionally superior.. i like buying organic and sometimes nonorganic frozen veggies for certain things like peas, broccoli, spinach . it's cheaper than buying fresh and more importantly,it is picked at the peak of ripeness and flash frozen so there is no nutrition loss. i love roasting sweet potatoes.. those are great too!
buy a steaming basket! they are so cheap and can be found anywhere like bed bath and beyond.. etc steaming is the BEST way to lock in all the nutrients. blend the veggies and store it in freezer trays, then pop them into freezer bags.
for her first fruits and veggies, you will prob try butternut squash ( i would roast this, scoop out the flesh and puree), sweet potato, peas, applesauce...
def check out wholesomebabyfoods.com and pick up this book, annabel karmels 100 top baby purees. this is what i used in the beginning! it was great!!!!
I highly recommend buy a 10 cup food processor. i had a 3 cup in the beginning and it took forever to get all the food pureed b/c i had to do it in small batches. i have the black and decker food processor. it was $50 from target.
good luck!!

once they are frozen, you can defrost them by leaving them in the fridge over night or defrost them right in the microwave. when i am at my mom's house, i heat them in a small sauce pan . she doesnt have a mic... when i am home, i throw them straight from the freezer to the mic. once in a while i remember to take a few out for the next day and put them aside in the fridge..

Either nuke 'em in the microwave or on the stove in a small saucepan

If you buy frozen veggies, what brand do you get and where do you get it?
How much do you make at one time and what do you store it in in the freezer?

Jess I highly recommend a food grinder. We used this all the time and could just grind whatever we were eating to give to baby, veg, fruit, chicken anything. We used the manual one, its like $8 at babies r us

The Beaba looks awesome, but I don't know if I want to spend $150 yet on it. I have a rice cooker that is also a steamer, that's okay to use right?

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
You know I was going to post on making baby food today. I started making DD food this past weekend but we had already started her on Gerber Stage 1 and when I tried to give her the food I made she hated it. I tried again today and yet again she hated it! I gave her the Gerber and she ate it all up! How do I get her to eat it!!!

You can use the rice cooker. I use a steamer insert and my food processor. It works for me.

I only made some of the baby food for my kids, but when I did, I just used a pot with a steamer basket, and a blender. Worked very well!

I heated her food up in hot water in the sink. I had those little plastic bowls with the clear lids and would let it sit for a few minutes.
