so when making chicken no one uses the low fat chicken broth that you buy at the super market? i know we cant use salt but my doc said to make the chicken with broth. So, am not sure if I can buy it or she meant Home made. If so How can I make that....Sorry with all the questions but I want to make it for her today..thanks
When I 1st started making DS food with chicken broth I made my own broth. It was a pain but I thought it was best. I used a recipe for broth in an Anna Karmel book (100 purees). But once DS hit 12 months or so I started to buy a specific chicken stock bc it had no artificial stuff, virtually no salt (140 mg sodium per 1 cup - very little compared to others) and was organic. It's made my Imagine and I buy it at Wild By Nature. It's a Low Sodium Chicken Stock. I believe they also have a low sodium chicken broth which has even less sodium. I personally would not use something like Swanson's or anything like that, the sodium content is outrageously high.
Have fun making your DC food!

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Some questions now that I've made two things...
Carrots - I steamed the HECK out of them and they still weren't very soft.. how long do you steam them for?
Adding BM - DD refuses my pumped milk in the bottle lately, so I added some to sweet potatoes and carrots.. is there anything I shouldn't add milk to?
Ice cube trays - My Ped said when she made hers, she used the ones specially made for baby food, that the portions were more appropriate. I feel like I've read on here that reg ice cube trays from the dollar store are just fine? Anyone have any opinions on this?
Immersion blender - Something my ped also recommended... did it with the carrots and it really wasn't very good. This could possibly be because the carrots weren't extremely soft? Is it better with other foods?
TIA!

Carrots - did you chop them up before steaming? I do dice a bit before steaming.
I have the Baeba so i am not sure how long they are steaming for, it does it automatically for me.
I think BM is fine in anything.
Ice cube trays - i use both the specific and regular ice cube trays and they both do the job. I actually prefer the smaller cubes bc I can mix and match the food to make the appropriate amount.
Immersion blender - never used this. regular food processor or blender should work fine. i would think an immersion blender would be better for things like soups and such.
hope that helps.

The cheaper, regular ice cube trays are the smaller ones, right? And what exactly do you mean by mix and match? (I'm TOTALLY clueless!)

I chopped the carrots into bite size pieces. If I recall correctly they steamed pretty quickly--maybe 7 or 8 minutes.
I liked the single baby food cube trays because they made for easy transport, but I guess any freezable tray with a cover should suffice.
I found the mini-prep food processor worked really well for pureeing baby food. Plus, since I had it in my kitchen it was free.

sorry i didnt explain...mix and match meaning, lets say DD eats about 2 oz of solids per meal. instead of giving 2 oz of carrots only, i can give 1 oz of peas + 1 oz of carrots to make the 2 oz of food total (one ice cube full of each). if i freeze 2 oz of peas and 2 oz of carrots, its harder to me to mix different foods bc then the amount is too much for DD to finish. did that make sense?
i can give 2 cubes of lets say, lentils with 1 cube of broth. by having the smaller amount frozen, i can vary the combos i can make.
By ice cube trays, i am referring to the normal ones you have in your freezer. these are about 1 oz of food each cube. for the trays specially made for baby food, i have the beaba ones. i love these, and each hole is 2 oz. but they are expensive and i got them as shower gifts. even though each hole is 2 oz, i mostly fill them only half way to make 1 oz each for the above reasons.

My dd just turned 7 months and we will be introducing her to meats. I have a few questions. 1) What did everyone try besides chicken at that age. My doc also mention not to use salt. How does everyone prepare it? Only thing I can think of to give flavor would be chicken broth. 2) On the paper that my doc gave it mentioned that I give 1/2 a jar of fruit, veggie and meats. How much is 1/2 if am making my own food? Sorry for all the questions but new to this.. Last one (sorry ) I will be starting to freeze the food. Once the food is frozen in the ice cube, I put them in freezer bags individual by type of foods? Or by when I made the food? Thanks
1)To flavor the meat I would chicken legs and thighs (skin on) in the oven, crushing a garlic clove and sticking it under the skin. It made it really flavorful.
Also, one of the first meats that I fed DD was chicken with sweet potatoes and apples. She loved the sweetness from the apples and sweet potatoes.
2) I really went by the ice cube trays to measure. For example, if at lunch she ate a meat and a veggie, then I would give her one cube of meat and one veggie. If dinner was 2 veggies, then I would give her 2 cubes, etc.

I add BM to everything because DD refuses a bottle (I usually mix BM/puree/cereal).
The immersion blender is awesome...IMO, easier to clean up than the food processor or blender. I use it for every food, so maybe the reason it didn't work for you was because the carrots weren't soft enough.
I just use regular ice cube trays. I think each cube is about an ounce.

I make butternut squash soup alot and add chicken or turkey to it, DD loves it and its very healthy. The soup is made with butternut squash, an apple, carrots, leeks, a sweet potato, chicken broth, and a tad bit of butter. I love it and so does she.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
I meant to post this weeks ago but I forgot.
Anyway I found a great recipe that replaces 1 of those Gerber Toddlers meals- the chicken with pasta one. My DS is 18mths and was beginning to become Mr. Picky and would only eat that for lunch. So I found a cheaper and freezable alternative.
Ina Garten Chicken Soup I doubled the noodles and it came out great! DS loves it!!

Did you give it to her plain first? DD wasn't thrilled with apples, but I think it's b/c I gave them to her plain (thinned with breastmilk alone or in cereal). Next time I make them I'll add cinnamon and see if she's happier!

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Hi girls, I plan on starting to make my own food too. I have a few questions. Right now they eat cereal in the am and I plan on adding veggies in the pm first then fruit to their morning cereal.
I was going to start with peas, then sweet pot then avocado or do you recommend starting with a different veggie?
Also what fruit did you start with? apples?
Thanks so much! I am sure I will have a million questions

We started with banana, but there's no real written-in-stone rule what you should start with. Peas are the only thing DD refuses to eat, but my friend's son loves them. Every baby is different.
Check out wholesome baby foods for recipes. I LOVE this site and have found it really helpful!

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
So I plan to start making my own baby food and have some questions;
How do you steam your food? I have no idea how to use a steam basket
How do you store your food? DD is eating 2-2.5 oz of cereal now.
How long does the food last in the fridge? In the Freezer?
What do you do with the food when you'll be out all day? How do you store it?
