so - i'm going to start offering larger chunkier purees....
i think psycho diva (my petname for bunny) was only insane picky because her top tooth was coming in (it took forever to break).....
the SITTER has given her: peas, apples, squash, carrots all 100% successfully. for me - it takes longer, but i make it work. dave is doing carrots for lunch today - should be interesting & i'm expecting a call any time now - with how frustrated he is! :)
i have written down SO many things from this thread to try for her - so THANK YOU for starting this thread & to everyone for keeping it going!!!
tip - use FUJI apples instead of red delicious - they're sweeter & Em DEFINITELY liked them a LOT better than the red.
so tonight's shopping trip shall include: apples french toast sticks blueberries yo baby yogurt plums pears mango strawberries avocado
we've also progressed to cheerios & puffs! VERY happy with the happy bellies puffs!
how is everyone else doing??
YES - Fuji apples ALL THE WAY!!!!!
Don't be surprised if Em doesn't like plums. Morgan likes pretty much everything and she hates peaches and plums - I think they are too tart for her.
I actually have started moving away from the purees starting this past week. I still give her fruits pureed (except bananas) because I haven't had any in the house. So far this week I have given her greek style chicken burgers, potato/onion perogies (she LOVES potatoes), roasted potatoes, morningstar chic patty, zuccini cut up, bagel, scrambled egg.....I'm sure there's more. Basically I'll give her anything I am eating. At 10.5 months she still has no teeth but she does surprisingly well!!!

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Nolan is doing great! DH on the other hand... is becoming quite jealous of the braised beef and sauteed chicken recipes I'm making for Nolan!!! He follows it up with he really means he's so proud and happy that I'm taking such good care of our boy!
He loves feeding himself... that little pinscer grasp... I could eat him up! And the way he chews! I'm loving it!
He loves puffs, organic cheerios, cheddar cheese, pancake, french toast. I gave him some inside bits from my bagel once, hard boiled egg, matzoh ball, papaya, cut up blueberries. I try new things all the time. I just wish DH got home from work sooner so we can have dinner as a family, then he'd try more things I'm sure.
His last batch of chicken, I pureed to almost a stage three like texture. You can make out the strings of chicken and colored bits of carrot, sweet potato and peas instead of one creamy tan color. He likes it. Loves his apple sauce and loves his yogurt!
For the apple sauce, I use a mixture of apples, organic if I can find. Sometimes I'll throw in pears too. The other night, I steamed a 5lb bag of macintosh.
He also loves this fruit puree I make with strawberries, blueberries, apples and pears with a little cereal mixed in at the end.
I still have not tried pastina and I've yet to steam veggies like carrot sticks for him to try. Maybe this weekend.
With the larger portions that he's having now, I'm running out of freezer room and containers!! We may have to look into a extra freezer for the basement! DH likes to buy from a meat guy in the summer and there is no room at all!

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
We have started Xavier on oatmeal since Sunday. I am starting carrots this weekend. Our ped recommends starting at 1 teaspoon and gradually increase to 4 tablespoons per day of veggies.
Anyone know the carrot to water ratio when first giving DC carrots? I think I figured everything out except for how much water and carrots to blend at once. i.e. 1 carrots per 2 oz of water etc...
At what point should I decrease the amount of water?
Would this apply to all veggies and fruits or is each one treated differently?
When would you start mixing the veggies with the cereal?
Did you use rice at all to mix with your food once DC's belly could retain the food or did you just stick to oatmeal/barley?
Lastly, when you first started a new veggie/fruit, when did you give DC the new item? This is my schedule so far- BF around 4:30/5am. 7:30/7:45 feed oatmeal then BF. I plan to give DC the veggie before his 12-1 pm feeding which is by bottle. Once I start another veggie when do I give him that?
Thanks

I make my DS's food (well, we are only up to veggies #3 and 4) but I did not make him carrots, I used earth's best for that. Some say not to make you own carrots, especially if baby is less than 7 months old because of nitrates. Others say it doesn't matter but I prefer to err on the side of caution.
I think you can start adding veggies to the cereal whenever you are ready. As long as they tolerate the cereal i think it should be ok.
DS is 6 months old and i haven't done rice yet. We used rice in his bottle for about 6 days when he was about 6 weeks old and he has some constipation so I'm scared to try it. He does great on oatmeal. Will be trying barley in the next 2 weeks (just found it after searching for weeks).
I give my DS his new veggie for lunch about 1.5 hours after his 2nd bottle of the day, which usually puts it at around 1ish. Once I start fruits I think i'll do fruit for breakfast w/cereal and veggies for lunch.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Just wanted to share that I recently bought a Cuisinart Stick Blender for making baby food (wasn't loving using my blender) and it works great!!! I love it and it was only about $40 after using a BBB coupon. And it comes with a chopper attachment and whisk attachment.
I used it today to make both acorn squash and butternut squash that I roasted and both came out incredibly smooth. Cleanup was also super easy since I just used a different bowl for each and rinsed the stick blender in between.

Just a note about adding water to carrots. Don't use the same water that you boiled the carrots in. It may contain nitrates.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
I have a few questions: Does anyone have a list or can tell me what the first foods were that they started DC on??
I did the whole cereal, oatmeal & barley. I started her on sweet potatoes this past week. Should I do a fruit next or do another orange veggie???
I have only come across not using the carrot water. Is there anything else I should be aware of?

I have really been following Wholesome Baby Food I started also with all the single grain cereals and now have been making my way through fruits and veggies (DD is 6.5 months). I wait for days before introducing something new. However, I will mix a fruit veggie once I introduce. I want to get through all fruits and veggies before moving on to meats/ protein/ dairy, etc. We still have about 8 foods left to do in the fruit / veggie category.
I've found Trader Joe's has a great selection of organic things like sweet potatoes, sacks of pears, strawberries, papaya, etc and has the best prices for those. However, Whole Foods has a MUCH LARGER selection of frozen organic fruits and veggies (and prices are comparable too). I like using frozen fruits / veggies esp. for "exotic" things like mangoes for instance b/c it's just so much easier. I pretty much use my steamer basket for everything and my blender to puree. Ice cubes to freeze and then have a huge cube stash in the freezer. I give 1 or 2 cubes with cereal at each meal. Sometimes I'll do 3 cubes and no cereal. I try to add formula instead of water to thin the puree when I'm serving it to DD (to get as much formula in her as possible, she's fussy with the bottle). However, when I make the food in the blender- if I need to thin it- I use water. Also, I have the little portable plastic cube storage containers from BBB that I throw a cube into when we travel or are out for a meal. I use the ice packs that came with my breast pump (or that were free in our hospital goody bag) to keep the food cool in a cooler bag- and then just heat in a microwave when we get to where we are going. If there's no microwave (ie: going to be at the park for lunch time). I'll heat before we leave in a portable cube and just take a spoon.
Maybe this is TMI lol - just sharing some helpful tips I've discovered over the past month or so we've been making DD's food & feeding solids. I love it! So easy, so cheap and couldn't imagine any other way.
Good Luck!!

I already BF DS and he should be napping now (he's talking to the ceiling fan instead) after he wakes up I'll try the carrots.

Thanks for the links. I read up on the nitrates issue and am going to use purified water for the carrots and the other veggies high in nitrates.

Thanks so much. This is really helpful
My only concern is how thin the veggie (starting on these first per the ped's instructions) puree should be. Should it be watery? Yogurt like texture? Lumpy? His oatmeal is slightly lumpy.

DS loved the carrots!! I started with one teaspoon. He liked it so much I'll give my mom 2 tsp for tomorrow and see how that goes. I made the carrots not too watery. If all goes well we move onto yams thurs.

Thanks so much for the tips! I'm just going to basically wing it. I just bought yellow squash and acorn squash so that will be next.
When you store them in ice trays do you cover them?? I have the storage trays from BBB, but not many. I might have to go pick up more.

I'm starting Xavier on sweet potatoes on Saturday. What do you suggest is the best way to cook them. Baked or steamed? wholesomefoods.com says bake is the best (followed by steaming) but I thought if you thin out the the puree it would be best to use the water it was steamed in. Except for those veggies high in nitrates of course... I'm not sure what to do...
This is DS's 2nd veggie. On Sat do I give him one serving of the SPs and then carrots in another feeding or should I only do SPs for the day?
I was thinking of giving him 1 serving of SPs. Then 1 serving of the carrots mixed with oatmeal. If I mix the carrots w/ oatmeal do I use less BM or the same amt?

I think ideally you use the water the veggie was steamed in but its not always possible. For sweet potato/yams and the squashes baking them is best. For sweet potato I just thinned it out with formula. I only did so right before serving right because I imagined the milk shouldn't be frozen or in the fridge too long. I would add a little bit of milk right before warming it to get the right consistency. For my butternut and acorn squash I just used some bottled water.

When I make SP I just pop them in the micro it's so much easier than baking them. Then I just mash them and add a little BM to get the desired texture.
I don't think there is anything wrong with giving him SP and then Carrots mixed with oatmeal. I would probably make the oatmeal a little thicker if you are going to add the carrot puree to it ( a little less BM in it).

I could be totally wrong about this, but I think that the reason its best to use the water that the veggie is steamed in is b/c some of the nutrients from the veggie are lost into the water, so you are replacing some nutrients when you use the water to puree it. That is, it is best to use the water you steamed with as opposed to using regular water. But it is not better than baking.
When you bake a veggie, you do not lose the nutrients into any water, like you do when steaming or boiling. So baking is the best way to prepare the veggie and then you use regular water for your puree. Like I said, I could be wrong, but that is what I think and have been going by.
I bake the sweet potatoes. Steaming potatoes sounds difficult. Cutting up a raw sweet potato is not the easiest thing and I imagine steaming would take forever.

Green Veggie question:
Has anyone made their own sweet peas and/or string beans? Any tips? Have you used fresh or frozen for these 2?
I'm worried about these 2 veggies bc they have skin that I'm guessing won't all puree nicely.
TIA!
One more thing - I put my veggie cubes in a ziplock and freeze them but I notice some freezer burn. How can I prevent this?

You should puree the peas and beans in a blender...it purees the skins up better

Steaming potatoes takes half the time than baking them.
Just peel, cube them (really not hard) and steam for about 10-15 min.
I find steaming potatoes is a lot quicker and easier But that's me!
