SAHM who use Daycare
First, let me start out by saying I have no intentions of offending anyone and their childcare choices ...
I have a friend who is SAHM of a one year old. Recently, she has been bringing her DC to daycare full-time while she's at home. I ask her if she's going back to work and tells me no but that she likes having the freedom to do things during the day w/o her baby. She says she knows lots of people who don't work outside the home who use daycare full-time. This is a new concept to me. Anyone else ever hear of this?

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
to each her own
i can see myself doing it if i needed to do tons of stuff & had no one around to watch DS...that said, I couldn't do it everyday if I were a SAHM
perhaps she is overwhelmed & suffering from PPD?

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
I see it a LOT
a good number of the kiddos at my daycare have a parent who's home all day.
No biggie, its their choice.
The kids get social skills, exposure to new things, an educational type environment, structure, learn to take orders from others in authority, crafts, etc. I don't see why its a big deal.
If you can afford it, want to do it, can do it, then do it. I don't think you're harming your child.
*shrug*
I don't see what the big deal is at all.
ETA: I use FT daycare but both hubby and I work. And this is coming from a woman who dies to see her kid on the webcam ! haha But I admit I could use a day or two a week!

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
If it was one time a week then I don't see anything wrong with it. As a mother yourself, I am sure you know how much faster errands get done when you are alone. But, if it was a few times a week, it would irk me.

whatever floats her boat but *I* couldn't imagine being a SAHM and having my child in daycare FULL TIME. 2x a week, I could see b/c let's face it sometimes it is WAY easier to run errands, get a haircut, breathe without the LOs

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
I personally don't get why you would choose to be a SAHM and then NOT be with your child every day. I am home with my DD and it's hard to get everything done but I manage. I made a choice when I had a child and to be home with her and to give up a lot of my own personal time. It's par for the course.
To each his own but honestly, she sort of sounds like a spoiled brat. She doesn't work and she doesn't even take care of your own child???........that's just insane! Just my opinion but it sounds very selfish. It wouldn't be my choice but I can see using daycare maybe 1-2 times a week but every day full time? Give me a break!

I send my three yr old twice a week right now...just b/c she's always gone up until this yr f/t and when her sister was born, we wanted to keep her sched the same, plus its good for her socially!

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
If I was able to be a SAHM it would be to spend time with my children so no, I don't understand FULL TIME day care for a SAHM.
Part time, sure. Everyone needs time for themselves, time to run errands, etc. and I think children would benefit from being in a structured environment with other kids as well.

I see absolutley nothing wrong with this! You're home with your other DD though.
OK once or twice a week, fine, I won't lie, I WISH I had that for DD (DS goes to school 4 hours a day, M-F)... DD goes everywhere with me. I manage! I cannot imagine bringing my kids to daycare FT and sitting home without them. Whatever, to each their own.

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
I could never, and I am a proponent of daycare/preschool.
Everyone needs a break and I do think that a structured school environment is good for little ones.
But full time, every day while I sit on my arse at home?
Running a house without kids in it is not a full time job for me and I would feel guilty that my husband is out there working and I'm home watching Law & Order SVU and shopping at Target (because that is what I would probably do after I've done errands and chores).
Not saying she should feel guilty but I know I would.

not sure about 5 days/week, but i could definitely see it for 1-2 days/week!
i actually looked into this for DS because DH has been having a hard time handling being a SAHD!

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
I will just go ahead and say it.
I find this concept to be insane. I am a sahm, lots and lots of sahms in my life. none of them send their babies to daycare fulltime.
Hell, if I ever hired a housekeeper, I would have to keep it a secret from dh and my mother...they would have me committed if I had my 1 year old at daycare fulltime.

I am a SAHM for now & I wish that I was able to have him go to daycare 1 day a week so that I can get things done. I think full time daycare 5 days a week is a little out there, imho.

I have to agree with you. I am a wohm but if I had the opportunity to be a sahm, I would never think of putting my child in daycare all week. I don't think my dh would be very happy with that arrangement either.

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
I am one who believes that kids get a lot out of daycare and I would rather my child have some time in a daycare setting. However, I also believe that full time hours in daycare are a lot for a small child. I could not be a SAHM and send him full time.

same here. I could only dream of having one full day a week , I would get so much stuff done. Even a half a day would be amazing. I could never imagine doing it on a regular basis.

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
1-2 days a week for socialization and sanity, sure, but full time is not appropriate if you made a committment to be a SAHM.
But then again, its probably not much different than SAHM's who have full time nannys or au pairs.

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
as much as I am trying not to judge right now, I kind of think this is weird. Why be a SAHM then? I am a SAHM and DD is with me 24/7..that's what I signed up for when I became a SAHM.
I have to say though, I agree with the other moms who say, a day or even a half day of DD in daycare or some sort of setting like that would make a world of difference in my housekeeping!
Then again, the usual..we dont know her circumstances, etc etc

I agree. I know a lady who has a nanny w/ three kids and she is a SAHM . I think thats great if you can afford it. She is so relaxed and she gets time with each of her kids seperately and does not need to wake them from naps or drag little ones to baseball games. But I think fulltime daycare while you are home alone is excessive, unless you have health issues that prevent you from caring for your children alone,

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
My cousin is a SAHM and sends her child to daycare.....I will be sending DS in July Im pregnant with my second and I just feel so tired all the time and I also think that it will be good for him. Im not having the best pregnancy and I just feel he will benfit from going also I feel bad if he was to stay with a lazy mommy all summer!
Oh I would not send DS full time .....just 2-3 days a week.

This is what we are doing. I do currently work PT so DD goes to daycare now 2 days a week. Once baby #2 comes along in August, I will not be going back to work, but DD will continue her current routine. For me, I feel she needs to keep consistency in her routine, and she really LOVES going to daycare.

ITA.
Maybe she thinks she is a better mother is she doesn't spend 24/7 with her kid.
I admit I am.

Re: SAHM who use Daycare
I have heard often of moms who have full time nannies while staying at home but not full time daycare. I plan to stay home when I have baby #2 and anticipate a part time or full time nanny.
A child is a lot of work and can understand the need for help but it seems quite odd to put your kid in full time daycare.
