Re: A baby just died of Swine Flu in NYC...
very sad. They are saying "maybe" ..a high fever could be a lot of health issues so we have to wait for them to confirm and see if the parents went to Mexico or not.

The article says "Possible Swine Flu". He had a high fever when bought in but they have not offically declared his death due to swine flu .

They said in the news conference that it was the Swine Flu. That is what Mayor Bloomberg said anyway.

Re: A baby just died of Swine Flu in NYC...
It was a possible case...hasn't been confirmed yet. And they said when the parents brought the 16 mo. old to the hospital he had a 105 fever and was unconscious. IMO, they probably didnt bring him to the hospital soon enough.

i don't know anything about the situation but I think this is kind of a mean thing to say. how do you know his symptoms? I know DS has a tendency to spike high fevers FAST when he has been sick. I think its horrible to imply that the child's parents are somehow to blame for this tragedy.

When was the news conference b/c I watched the news at 12 and Bloomberg said it wasn confirmed yet and I thought the CDC testing takes 2-3 days to get results???
Regardless, I still think the child didnt get medical attention early enough.

My DS gets high fevers as well...I have brought him to the hospital for high fevers before and dont wait. The same thing happened with the child in Texas...the baby was sick for several days with a fever, etc. before the parents sought medical care.
If you've been watching the news unfortunately the emergency rooms are filled with people thinking their children could have the swine flu. The hospital is the last place I would bring DS right now unless it was absolutely necessary. And many of these people are going straight to the hospital b/c they dont have medical insurance, therefore, can't see a pediatrician or family doctor first.
ETA: I do not think the parents are to blame for their child's death. I dont think that was how my statement came across at all.

Hmmmm so i don't understand what you are saying - in one vein you are saying you wouldn't bring DS to the hospital unless it were absolutely necessary (which, I wouldn't either) and that is why I can't believe you are blaming these parents for the death when you have no idea what the symptoms were.
I understand it makes it easier to explain away the situation but, imagine that were your child - would you want someone to say something like that? As parents we can't run to the ER everytime our child is sick and who is to say that the child's fever didn't spike while they sat there for hours waiting?
At this time no, I would not bring DS to the hospital if I thought he had swine flu unless my pediatrician directed me to.
And again, I am NOT blaming the parents for the death of their child. I just think as parents, giving the health concern, we have to be more aware of our childrens symptoms and what we can brush off and what should be taken more seriously. I pray none of us are put in this situation

I have to say I suspect they may likely be immigrants, based on the area in Queens. And quite often, there is a lack of knowledge or understanding due to a language barrier. Just suggesting this could play a role.

This was my point but obviously didnt know how to say it without upsetting or offending anyone. Of course the Mayor is not going to come on TV and say this, but given the footage I've seen on the news this is what I think the case may be

SOOO many people think it's a joke and make fun of those of us who have expressed worry/concern. I have said ALL along it's NOT a joke. I think some people are quick to dismiss the serious nature of a subject UNTIL it touches them or someone they know or they can somehow relate to the situation a bit better. .

Re: A baby just died of Swine Flu in NYC...
It's a tragedy - no matter where the child or the parents are from, or when and where they got treatment.
It's a tragedy, and it's scary.
My sister teaches right in the center of all the closed schhols (hers isn't closed tho). She wanted to come over for dinner last night. Only after she got her did I realize - I could be exposing my DD to it. And I would never, ever forgive myself if she were to get sick....never mind....losing her life....

I do think we need to remember that 20,000+ people die in the US every year from the Flu. So this is scary but the flu can actually cause death as well.

do u have a link to the story?
HERE is another link with more details.
From all the news accounts I've read before this one, I don't see how this could be swine flu. None of the other cases (even those in Mexico) have had a perfectly healthy child get a fever and die the same day.
