do u have a link to the story?
HERE is another link with more details.
From all the news accounts I've read before this one, I don't see how this could be swine flu. None of the other cases (even those in Mexico) have had a perfectly healthy child get a fever and die the same day.
thank u! yes i do agree with you this sounds weird but i pray for the family that has to go through this

I agree. When they brought the baby to the hospital he was unconscious so either he had been sick for a few days with a fever and they didnt see a dr or it's not the swine flu...something different like meningitis which can kill in only 24 hours.
Either way, it is heartbreaking to lose a child.

This is very scary -- I read in the post today that around 100,000 people are infected throughout the country according to the Centers for Disease Control. I think we've only seen the tip of the iceberg.

He died from other complications, and the swine flu added to it and created the problem! Healthy people who don't have any other related problems won't die from the flu!

What did he have?
It was my understanding that one of the things making this flu more concerning is that healthy people in Mexico were dying of it. I know that hasn't been the case here (altough the family of the AP that died seems to be insisting he was healthy and this is the first I am hearing that the toddler today had underlying issues) however, it could turn into what happened in mexico.
I also thought that very young children and pregnant woman (healthy in both cases) can have serious reactions to this flu.
ETA: Also the media keeps saying these people have "preexisting health conditions" and then it is coming out that they really don't. With the AP and also, the pregnant woman that died in Texas - a NYT article last week said all she had was mild astma and psoriasis neither of which I consider to be a serious condition and she was taking no other meds than prenatal vitamins.

Re: A baby just died of Swine Flu in NYC...
I work in the medical field. Healthy children can die from the regular flu..there doesn't have to be an underling condition..that is why pediatricians always push for young children to get the flu shot. The infant that died had a sibling..The older child has the same illness( whether swine flu not confirmed yet)..but so far since he is a little older was able to handle it better.. Flu does come on suddenly and that is why it is scary. The fever may not have been that bad prior to going to the hospital.. I have a young child and a am VERY nervous about any flu...swine or regular flu season.

I totally agree with all of this. Its definately possible for people to die just from the flu..or complications from it. Especially children and elderly! I think to take this as "just the flu" is silly at this point. I am not even sure I believe its a form of the flu. In this day in age, who knows what the heck it is. The son of the teacher who passed away SWEARS he had nothing else wrong with him. To me, I am being cautious..overly cautious maybe but you just never know.

Re: A baby just died of Swine Flu in NYC...
Just on the news tonight...
Preliminary tests show the toddler did NOT have the swine flu, however, they are still waiting for confirmation from the CDC testing done.
The parents said the child had a cough and fever earlier that morning. They brought him to the hospital that night where he died shortly after.
Sounds more like meningitis or something more serious than the swine flu to me.

Young children and pregnant women are more susceptible and may have a more severe reaction because they have underdeveloped (in the case of children) and compromised (in the case of pregnant women) immune systems. They are also not able to take certain kinds of medication.

Officials: Early tests show tot didn't have swine flu
BY MICHAEL FRAZIER | [email protected] 10:43 PM EDT, May 19, 2009
As swine flu continued Tuesday to migrate through city schools and Rikers Island, city health officials said preliminary test results show a Queens toddler did not die of the virus.
In a statement Tuesday night, the city health department said tests on nasal swabs from 15-month-old Jonathan Zamora Castillo "did not indicate H1N1 infection."
Because the boy died, however, the city is sending tissue specimens to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta to get "definitive results." Results are expected later this week.
