A ton of Baptism Questions
Ok...I thought i only had the one question about cost now apparently i have more. . .
1. How much did you donate to the church for the baptism? 2. How much did you give the pastor for performing the baptism? 3. What are the cost responsibilities of the godparents? 4. Is it your job to "inform" the godparents of their financial responsibilities? 5. If you are not catholic do you still pick a saint's name as a baptism name? 6. If the baptism is on a Saturday is it ok to still have a lunch or should it be held later and do a dinner? 7. As far as baptism suits for boys, do they always have to be white or can they also have a colored trim to them? 8. My brother is getting married May 15, is it OK to have the baptism in April? Or am I "over burdenoning family???"
Thanks for all of your patience with my questions

Re: A ton of Baptism Questions
I don't know what the "right" answers are but here is what we did.
1. How much did you donate to the church for the baptism? If I remember correctly, maybe $150-$200 2. How much did you give the pastor for performing the baptism? Nothing extra - just the church donation. 3. What are the cost responsibilities of the godparents? Nothing really...just a gift. Although my Mom says it is tradition that the Godmother buy the Christening outfit. 4. Is it your job to "inform" the godparents of their financial responsibilities? I would never. 5. If you are not catholic do you still pick a saint's name as a baptism name? I didn't and a lot of people I know didn't but I think you are "supposed" to. 6. If the baptism is on a Saturday is it ok to still have a lunch or should it be held later and do a dinner? We did ours on a Saturday - a lot of churches are - and did a luncheon at a restaurant immediately following. Not sure how it would work with a dinner - there would be a time lag in between. 7. As far as baptism suits for boys, do they always have to be white or can they also have a colored trim to them? I think they are all mostly white but blue trim is fine. 8. My brother is getting married May 15, is it OK to have the baptism in April? Or am I "over burdenoning family???" I would do it in early April - you don't want people to have to book up back to back weekends are lay out gift money so close together. But that's just me being polite, I don't think anyone would think it's rude if you do what you want.

Re: A ton of Baptism Questions
1. I think we donated about $100.
2. We did not tip the priest.
3. Godparents have no financial responsibility. 4. See #3.
5. We did not choose a "baptism name". I've never heard of this. Kids choose a "Confirmation name" when they are confirmed, usually around age 12-13.
6. I think lunch is fine.
7. Color trim is probably fine. Our boys wear a baptismal gown that is all white.
8. I think a baptism in April and a wedding in May is fine.
Good luck!

Re: A ton of Baptism Questions
1. How much did you donate to the church for the baptism?
Nothing, we tipped the priest
2. How much did you give the pastor for performing the baptism?
The priest was a friend of mine, we tipped him $200
3. What are the cost responsibilities of the godparents?
Traditionally, the Godmother buys the outfit and the godfather tips the priest and gets a present
4. Is it your job to "inform" the godparents of their financial responsibilities?
They sort of should know already
5. If you are not catholic do you still pick a saint's name as a baptism name?
If the baby's first name is not that of a saint, then the middle name usually is. Some churches make a stink about it, while others do not. For example, if your dd was named January Ann, that would work because the middle name is that of a Saint.
6. If the baptism is on a Saturday is it ok to still have a lunch or should it be held later and do a dinner?
Lunch is totally fine!
7. As far as baptism suits for boys, do they always have to be white or can they also have a colored trim to them?
White is traditional but I don't see how a trim would hurt!
8. My brother is getting married May 15, is it OK to have the baptism in April? Or am I "over burdenoning family???"
I think it is fine!
Good Luck!!!

Re: A ton of Baptism Questions
This is what we did
1. How much did you donate to the church for the baptism?
$200 for both DS & DD
2. How much did you give the pastor for performing the baptism?
$0
3. What are the cost responsibilities of the godparents?
we got $500 from each godparent plus, godfather bought the cross for DS, godmother bought name bracelet for DS.
for DD we got $500 in cash from each godparent plus cross from godmother & name bracelet from godfather
4. Is it your job to "inform" the godparents of their financial responsibilities? we didnt expect the godparents to do anything... for DS godfather paid for the liquor bill & for DD Godmother paid for the liquor bill.
5. If you are not catholic do you still pick a saint's name as a baptism name?
we didnt pick a baptism name... they do that for confirmation
6. If the baptism is on a Saturday is it ok to still have a lunch or should it be held later and do a dinner?
most baptisms are on Sundays.. i never heard or went to one on a sat.
7. As far as baptism suits for boys, do they always have to be white or can they also have a colored trim to them?
DS wore a gown made from my wedding dress which was cream color
DD wore the same gown with more frills
i never saw a christening outfit with colors
8. My brother is getting married May 15, is it OK to have the baptism in April? Or am I "over burdenoning family???"
i would ask your immediate and close family members what they think....
