? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
i need opinions here! we bought a houses 3 months ago and are not in it yet b/c of construction....we have one of our trucks and a small trailor parked infront of our house....it's been there for 3 months.....we will be moving in shortly.... we received a letter from our neighbors across the street..introducing themselves, and then asking that we move our truck b/c it is directly behind their driveway....they said it was hard to back out of and w/this weather it's even harder (our block is not narrow & they are older people)......as of now my dh put it in the driveway.....but i don't think it will be able to stay there when we move in b/c we have 2 other cars that will have to be parked there......
1-a part of me is like too bad...it's infront of our house where we live and we don't have the room to keep it on our driveway (if we keep it on our driveway, then we will have to constantly be moving the cars around) 2-the other side of me wants to talk to them eventually and let them know that there are times when we will try to accomodate them and there are times when a car will be parked there...we have a lot of family/friends and i am sure that we will most likely have a car there the majority of the time (if not that truck).....i don't know what to do...and i really don't want to start off on the wrong foot...me personally, i would never ask this of my neighbor (my current neighbors always park directly across from my driveway & i just deal w/it)...any advice, opinion, thoughts, comments! also please don't quote, you never know who lurks here!! thanks!!

Move the truck in front of their house instead, then it won't block them when pulling out of their driveway.

that was my first thought too.
But I will say I can totally see where the neighbors are coming from. My parents house, where I grew up in and they still live there, is on a regular street. Nothing narrow, but when cars are parked on the street, backing out of my parents driveway is more than difficult with a car parked on the street directly opposite it. Same goes for our neighbors. In fact, my aunt came over to my parents house recently to show off her brand new car. She parked it on the street right outside my parents house. We were all inside having a good time when the doorbell rang - it was the neighbor across the street, who, while backing out of his driveway, misjudged and totally slammed into my aunts brand new car - it was literally 2 hours old and it had more than $1000 worth of damage.
Since then, as a courtesy, we don't block neighboring driveways if we can. However, there are times when it can't be avoided, and you just have to take that chance!

They want you to move YOUR car from the front of YOUR house?
Wow. Go tell them to pound sand.

And I personally LOVE this idea. Try to say it to them with a straight face too like you really think this is a great idea.

We live on a curve and our neighbors have no drice way. They park one of their cars right behind our drive way. I'm afraid that I will hit their car in the morning, so I back in my SUV into the driveway everyday.

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
when i was a senior in high school, my girlfriend backed right into my brother in laws car which was parked across the street directly behind my parents driveway. it was not a nice walk back through the door to tell them. i would just try to find a different place even just a few inches up from where you are. take my advice. you don't need their car in yours especially since they are older.

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
I'm sorry there is no way I would try and accomendate them. first of all you pay your mortgage and taxes not them. And who do they think they are to tell you that you can't park on the street never the less in front of your house. I understand they are your neighbors and you have to live across from them and not me. But I just don't understand how some people have the nerve to ask this of you. I wouldn't move it at all.

If there is no other room on the sidewalk, then you have to park where you park.
As for us, our across the street neighbors have a wide front lawn (80 ft) AND driveway. They like to park directly opposite our driveway. If they would just move their car up 5 feet, I wouldn't have to worry about slamming into their car.

i dont think it was uncalled for.. they were being nice.. they are older and its hard to back in and out of driveways sometimes with trucks parked in front if your house..
can you park one of your cars there and move the truck into your driveway..
have sympathy for the elderly....

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
I know it's annoying because you should be able to park in front of your house, but I can also see how it's annoying for them. In order to keep the peace, it would probably be best to try to figure out an alternative or at least talk to them or send them a letter to let them know that you are aware of the problem and will try to work something out, or at least let them know that the truck is just temporary until you're done moving in. I don't know how big your driveway is, but would it be possible to park the truck in the back of your driveway, and then maybe fit one car in front of it, and park the other car in the street in front of your house? That might leave enough space to prevent blocking their driveway.

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
As someone who has someone park right behind their drive way I can tell you that it makes my life just a bit harder to get out of our driveway..... so yes, I would love if they could move their SUV 10 feet from where they park. Actually they have 50 feet of street to park. They just love to park right there. Yes, they are allowed to park anywhere they want if it's legal. But unless you have someone behind your driveway, you won't understand.
I especially love it when there is snow!!!

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
I can certainly understand the mentality of not wanting someone to tell you what to do with your own vehicles in front of your own house. BUT, rather than have a car backed into your car, I would try to figure out a new parking situation.

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
I'd much rather get a note asking me to move my car than a note saying my car had been hit.
I'd also prefer a car parked in front of my house than across from my driveway.
I don't understand the outrage from some of the pp. I would try to accommodate the request (as you have) whenever possible.

I agree. I also wanted to say, what nice neighbors to handle it all politely! I would try my best not to burn bridges in my brand new neighborhood.

ITA. They clearly haven't said anything for the past few months until recently. I think it was very nice how they handled it. I think somewhere along the way, people forget that when you buy a house, you become part of a community - so try to help a neighbor out!
I would say that you should keep your truck in the driveway during the bad weather days. Otherwise, could you move it up or back a little to make it easier for them to back out of their driveway?
One last note - I hit my neighbor's car one while backing out of my driveway . . . and my FIL did the same thing over Christmas!

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
I think it was very nice of them to ask politely. Some people people are getting all defensive & terrritorial, but they are letting you know it is hard for them to back out, so now you know that your truck may get hit accidently.
They probably also figure, since you arene't living there, why can't you just put it in the driveway. I dont' think they expect that spot to be clear all the time.
Maybe it is just the size of the truck,. When you move in & have your 2nd car, if your 2nd car is smaller, can you park that in front & keep the truck in the driveway. It you can pull the smaller car up, it might give them more room.
Also, is your truck very wide? A regular car parked there may also gove them more space ven if you can't move it up any.

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
I say try accomodate them when you can. For the times you cannot they should reverse in.
If they cant reverse in--they should not be driving.

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
Here's the issue. If she wants to accomodate them and move the truck, where is she moving it to?
She said the driveway is not an option. So if she isn't parked in front of her house, she would have to park in front of somebody else's house.
Just do a search for all the threads on here from people complaining about neighbors parking in front of their house, and see what type of drama parking in front of someone else's house can cause.
I agree with the PP. They can reverse in. If they can't figure out how to reverse in, they shouldn't be driving. Or they can park in front of their own house instead of the driveway. That eliminates the need for backing in and out.

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
I would move in now that you are not living there and the driveway is free. Honestly though once you move in I'd move it back in the street. They cannot tell you were to park your cars! It's in front of your own house. They can back out slowly if they have a problem.

Re: ? about parking infront of your house/neighbors
Can't you just park on the other side of the street in front of their house? Seems like a reasonable solution
