Re: This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!
I was a nanny for a while, I worked with few different families, but 2 were long term/full time -9 to 5, 5-6 days a week and the 2 families always provided food, they always made sure there was enough food in the house , or they would leave me money for dinner if it was a late night, they would even give me a cab money to go home .

Re: This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!
It wouldn't occur to me to NOT provide food for a nanny or a babysitter. I have someone watch my daughters for a few hours and I always tell them to help themselves to any food that they want. I even go out of my way and buy something I know that they like.
For me, it is the whole having someone in your house.

Re: This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!
That used to bother me, too. We were on a VERY tight budget, and having another person to feed (or going to use some ingredient for dinner, only to find that it's gone) was REALLY bothersome to me.
I'm just going to put this out there--trust me on this one--if something, ANYTHING, does not feel right about this situation...you need to trust your gut and think about daycare.
We weren't thrilled w/ our last nanny, but she was doing an ok job. My DD seemed to like her. Still.......there was something unsettling about her to me. It was my gut talking to me...and I ignored it. Came to find that she had stolen 2 $50 Target gift cards right out from under our noses. I thought I had dropped them somewhere or misplaced them...then my MIL found the receipt from when she bought the gift cards, and they traced them and found out they had both been used in a Target store an hour away...right near her home.
I'm sorry, I went off on a tangent...my point is, trust your gut. If little things are adding up to big things, and you're not comfortable w/ the situation...definitely time to think of cutting loose and moving on.

Re: This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!
Thanks for the all the responses!!!
I needed to hear all sides. To answer a few questions she works 7am-5pm, M-F...so she is not a live in.
I was NOT aware I was providing her 2 meals a day when we negotiated salary, hours and responsibilities. I only found out about this when she showed up on day one with a list of a few things to get for her in the house. She said when the children are bigger (my DD is 3.5 months) she eats what they do but in this case she likes XYZ. I would never not let her eat something if she was hungry but to make sure she has coffee and creamer etc is just really annoying and to be honest adds up for us. When I think about it just annoys me when I see her cutting up bananas, and strawberries for her cereal and then using the avocados and tomatos to the point where I now have to go to the food store 2-3x a week. I just feel like my home is a fancy deli for her. My DH and eat clean, no processed foods or anything like that so we spend more on food because it's our choice. Now our nanny is getting this benefit of eating our produce at our expense and it just doesnt feel right and the burden is just stressing me out.
We are paying $750/week, and it just doesn't feel right that I am now in the situation to either shop for her and worry that she has food to eat or give her more money. I am having to buy her special foods and it almost feels like I work for her.
It sounds like this can be typical for some and not for others. I guess I learned a lesson. I'm so frustrated and really have to figure this out. I don't know if I'm just not loving having a nanny or if she is just not the right fit for our family.
Thanks again for the input!

Wow, you are paying her a lot for one kid - AND you are providing food for her as well?? I might have to sit down and have a chat with her

If it bothers you that she is putting a banana in her cereal, I think there are much bigger issues!!!
Are you in NYC? It seems like a lot of money to me, but maybe in the city that is the going rate?

750 a week is CRAZY. I would start looking for someone new and include a food allowance in a lower salary. I pay my babysitter $10 an hr(I live in NC)

Is this a live in or live out nanny? Live in, yes part of the family. Live out...no, not part of the family and no need to purchase her food. She should bring her own breakfast and lunch.
Ditto.
When I had a live-in, room and board was part of the package.
But if she is not a live-in (rather a babysitter, which is what I call it), then she should bring her own stuff..
I will say that I am of the type that if someone is watching my child (the most precious thing to me) I have NO problem with them helping themself to food in the fridge BUT I would get ticked off if demands for food was made from the getgo.. that's not cool.

I have no problem providing my nanny with food, as long as it is reasonable.
I just buy more of what we typically have in the house and gauge what she likes/doesn't like.
She is in your house all day and has to eat. I wouldn't go by her anything special or fancy.
As for her salary, where do you live?????

I am in Atlanta and I interviewed 12 nannies and they all asked for between 14-16/hour. I have her for 50 hours a week....is this still unreasonable for 50 hours?

To me big difference between nanny and babysitter hence the extra $$.
My nanny has years of experience and has all her first aid and CPR training up to date. She has also taken classes on early development and is active in his life versus a babysitter who can just be a college kid paid to sit and watch TV while my son plays alone.
In NYC area it isn't uncommon to pay $500+ a week for live- in care.

Re: (ADDED EXPLANATION AT BOTTOM) This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!
My nanny is a live-in so we do provide all food and even alot of toiletries for her - but I think it's different because it's not like she can go out and buy her own stuff unless it's on the weekend.
I do think that you need to provide food for her. But it has to be reasonable - fruits, veggies, snacks, deli stuff, etc.... if she is asking for stuff like fancy nuts (like my baby nurse demanded! lol!) then no, I don't think that's reasonable. But the regular lunch stuff then yes. Also, if she is leaving at 5, you don't provide food for her dinner right?

$750 a week is out of control. My friend has a nanny for her twins and she pays her 375 a week (and she does take care of her meals)

Re: (ADDED EXPLANATION AT BOTTOM) This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!
I think 750 a week + food for a nanny who works 9-5 M-F is fair, (it's actually low if you live in NYC/Manhattan . That was a starting salary for an experienced FT nanny with great references 6-7 years ago and then 6 months or a year later the pay went up). Being a nanny is NOT an easy job, I know from my personal experience..... I can tell you one thing: if you feel like she is not a good fit for your family, you don't really 100% like her or you feel like she is taking advantage of you and your DH than fire her and find someone else, but if you like/love her, you kids love her , she takes good care of your kid(s) and does everything you want her to do than I would keep her, bc it is SOOOOO HARD to find a good nanny. I think the rest is your decision. But if you do end up letting her go and hiring someone else make sure you discuss the food situation during the interview.
Oh so you are in Atlanta? OK in that case I have no idea about salary....

Although I try not to be defensive on these boards..the tone of your message seems to imply that my babysitter sits on the couch and watches TV I don't really get that...thats a pretty big leap.

Nope, that's what we pay our nanny ($15 an hour). We are in Brooklyn. All the nannies we interviewed were between $12-20 an hour.

Holy shitt balls that's a lot of money for 1 child being an infant. Honestly it sounds like there is a bigger issue here somewhere. I would start looking for another nanny or consider daycare. I would start by saying that while she told you on her 1st day that you would be providing her meals that this was something she did not mention in the interview and that you feel her salary is reasonable enough for her to provide her own extras. Coffee/creamer/specialty fruits. I get the let her eat what she wants she's now family thing, but let's be real food is expensive and there is no reason she can't bring her own. I have NEVER worked somewhere wher emy meals were included except as a LIVE IN nanny. You should get in contact with a nanny service and get a live in or they can help you get a live out.

I also think it is reasonable. I live in NYC and most nannys we interviewed request $12-$15/hr plus food AND metrocard.
I am having issues with my nanny... she shows up late, even though I provide her food, she takes my son to McD's to get food (which he is not allowed to eat), she texts all day, watches TV, etc. However, she is great with my son.
If your only issue is that she eats your healthy food, then consider it a good example for you child and count your blessings!!

Yawn
If your babysitter has all those qualifications then she is very underpaid.
She could probably make $10 an hour at Taco Bell and do that while sleepwalking

I agree.
Would probably help if we all had where we lived under our usernames - would help show the going rate by market easier.
I think some would be surprised to learn in NYC some nannies make $35k plus a year plus paid vacations and free R&B
