I think some would be surprised to learn in NYC some nannies make $35k plus a year plus paid vacations and free R&B

exactly! I can honestly say that being a nanny in Manhattan was the best job I ever had in many ways and I absolutely LOVED it . I was so lucky bc I worked for wonderful families and I'm still in touch with some of them to this day.

This point is moot now, she said she lives in Atlanta

I still think that's a lot of money, I would "shop" around a bit and try and find out what other working nannies are making. TBH though, it sounds like you are just not very happy with her. I would find someone else.

Re: (ADDED EXPLANATION AT BOTTOM) This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!

When I was a nanny, the woman always asked me what I wanted from the grocery store - I never asked for anything b/c what she bought I just ate - I drank the same tea, soda, ate the same coldcuts, etc.. No problem, but I always thought that she was very nice/generous/kind to offer.. she also said I could do my laundry at her house too...and a few times I did do that

..... with that...

I intereviewed for nannies last week - and I also mentioned that they can let me know what they like for lunch /soft drink/snacks so I can make sure it is here for them. And she can do laundry here too.... But... if I were to buy something that I didn't want her to eat I would surely mention it..of course I will buy what the girl likes -within reason- ... but if she wants to bring her own lunch that is fine too. I am offering a lower hourly wage than you are -- so providing her with lunch is part of her 'benefits/wages' if you want to look at it that way - I have worked in corporate offices where the company paid for our lunches... so the food thing is okay w/ me -
but there are other things I don't like (texting while working w/ DC; being late; talking on cell phone..to name a few).

I think it's a fairly common thing but it would bother me that she didnt make that demand until she started and not when the offer was initially presented. It's tough now though to go back on it though right? My friend had this exact scenario happen to her and honestly, it was an indicator of the way things were going to go in their relationship (i.e. her demands etc.) and she lasted all of 3 months with them...

FWIW I dont think the salary for those hours is shocking but I'm going based on NYC standards and not sure of your market.

WHAT?!?!? 750/week? Chat Icon for ONE child? AN INFANT! and you work from home? oh HE LL NO!

You can get a live in for HALF that!Chat Icon and she'll cook and clean for you as well! Chat Icon

I needed to hear this.

I am in Atlanta and I interviewed 12 nannies and they all asked for between 14-16/hour. I have her for 50 hours a week....is this still unreasonable for 50 hours?

Nope, that's what we pay our nanny ($15 an hour). We are in Brooklyn. All the nannies we interviewed were between $12-20 an hour.

I babysit 1x a month for one of my former families and they pay me $20 per hr plus they provide food- I never asked . They are in Manhattan. They also have a regular nanny and she gets paid $25 per hr.
I also have a friend who has a ft nanny in Queens -FH and she pays her $650 a week, M-F , 8-4 and extra if she stays late some nights.
I think if you find a GOOD nanny 10-15 per hr is wonderful.

I agree.

Would probably help if we all had where we lived under our usernames - would help show the going rate by market easier.

I think some would be surprised to learn in NYC some nannies make $35k plus a year plus paid vacations and free R&B

I agree! My nanny is making 37k plus 2 weeks paid vacation, two meals a day, paid holidays etc. She also wanted us to pay her taxes which would have been another 8k on top of it. Chat Icon She was referred to us by someone my Dh knows very well and used her for 4 years. We are no NYC, but I did read Atlanta along with NYC is one of the top 5 markets for nannies!

Re: (ADDED EXPLANATION AT BOTTOM) This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!

i don't think you should be responsible to provide her with breakfast and lunch. She should come with her own food and put it in the fridge if need be - and her sole concern at your home should be carrying for your child - that's it. I believe in having her feel welcome and that she should feel free to help herself to any food in the fridge (milk, etc...) but to have to worry about purchasing items that she specifially wants especially after you are paying her a salary- is unacceptable and gutsy to me.

We are not paying her taxes. That did come up when we were negotiating and we told her we were not financially able to cover that cost. We were ready to continue our search and move on and she said she would take the job anyway.

I agree that she could cover her own meals and take here and there from what we have in the house.

Bottom line is that I was not prepared to supply her with food that she requested and that is why I am not comfortable with it. If we discussed it prior and came to an agreement that would be different, but I wasn't prepared to endure this burden and cost and feel backed into a corner.

Re: (ADDED EXPLANATION AT BOTTOM) This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!

I am confused.

You said she told you this on Day 1. She walked in, you were about to leave for work, and she said, "Oh BTW, you know you have to feed me, right?"Chat Icon

No wonder you are annoyed.

I would say something like this:

"You are more than welcome to eat anything we have in the house. Here is an extra $20 a week to buy any items that you enjoy that we don't have. It'll be easier that way, because you know what you like better than I do."

When I read the beginning I thought big deal buy extra food....BUT....Holy cr@p her salary is high. I think she can afford her own meals. I worked as a nanny through grad school for 3 children, not 1, and made 600 a week. I thought I made out.Chat Icon

IMO, $750 a week for that many hours is a lot of money - she can pack her own lunch. If you paid HALF that per week, it's still more than a daycare would cost. Just something to consider....

Re: (ADDED EXPLANATION AT BOTTOM) This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!

Considering your explanation and how much you are already compensating her, I think you should explain to her that while you would never tell her that she can't have something, she cannot eat you out of house and home and you will not be buying her specialty items. She can do that herself or you can renegotiate compensation to figure her grocery bill in.

I have a nanny that works 3 days a week. She is welcome to my food...but fact is I really dont have much. DD's food is in the fridge, Im lucky if me and DH have anything. I work full time, thats why I have a nanny. I sure as hel dont have time to go shopping for her! If she gave me a list I would probably laugh at her.
I think she just drinks my coffee, if that. I have never asked if she ate, its not my problem.
I think your nanny has some balls.

I agree with you 100%! After really thinking about all sides of this today I have to rule out daycare as an option. The problem is I travel up to NYC for work every 5-6 weeks for 3 nights and my DH would not be able to do the drop off and pick up. He works crazy long hours and we negotiated with this nanny that during those weeks that I am gone there would be 6 hours of overtime...we do pay her extra for these hours. We need this flexibility and my DH needs that help during those times.

I am going to consider all the input here and keep you posted on how i decided to handle this. I need to sit on it for a bit longer and see how I feel.

Thanks again for all the feedback..it's amazing advice!

Re: (ADDED EXPLANATION AT BOTTOM) This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!

A week old, but just wanted to say I am a nanny and I dont expect them to feed me... I do have pretty much free roam of their fridge but alot of times I will bring leftovers from home or get outside food for the day... On occassion I will have some cold cuts that are in their fridge or soup, etc but I mostly fend for myself... I treat it like any other job in regards to how I will be eating lunch... Honestly, if I was a mom and needed childcare, someone who demanded they be fed wouldnt be watching my child... Its rude IMO

Re: (ADDED EXPLANATION AT BOTTOM) This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!

I think it really depends on how good your nanny is. If she was a great nanny, I would suck it up and just feed her. There is a wide range of nannies. Some are illegal and uneducated. Some are well educated and want full benefits. Some clean. Some don't. So I really think it depends on what type of nanny you have and what the expectations were at time of hire.

I know a girl who also complains that her nanny eats them out of house and home. The mom will premake meals for the week and then the nanny eats all of it. At the end of the day, their nanny is good so they just suck it up. I'd just buy more knowing you have another mouth to feed. If she requests a few grocery items, I would just buy it for her. If your DC is in good care, I think it is worth it.

Re: (ADDED EXPLANATION AT BOTTOM) This is bothering me! Re: Nanny!

she's definitely making bank. that is high even by manhattan standards. we live in manhattan and our nanny makes less than that and while i like to have stuff around for her and she's welcome to eat our food, she also brings or buys quite a bit of her own and certainly she would never demand anything. if i were you, i would tell her i expected her lunch was part of her salary like any other job and that you expect her to bring her own food and she's welcome to store it in your fridge. that's pretty outrageous in my view given what you are already paying her and the way that she approached it.
