Re: advice for 3hr glucose test
I was just careful the day before. I made sure I didnt drink soda and ate no halloween candy or carbs.
I went to a sunrise lab and I didnt need an appointment. I called and she just said make sure I am there by 8 cause they go to lunch at 11.

I took the 3hr test 2 times and I ate and drank everything I normally do (juices, candy, carbs, etc) and passed both times. I know I read that you should not limit your intake of carbs for accuracy, as long as you fast for the recommended amt of time the night before. Just think, if this is how you normally eat, your body should be able to handle candy, soda, etc, and altering that a few days before the test may only falsely pass you. See the directions below or maybe call your dr and see what they recommend.

Re: advice for 3hr glucose test
There is no preparing for the test and to be honest, as someone who had GD, I would not make any effort to try and "beat the test". If you have GD you need to know so it can be addressed or you're putting yourself and your baby at risk. Just go in and take the test and deal with the results. If you are diagnosed with GD it's not the end of the world and as soon as you deliver it goes away. I had to follow a strict diet and take insulin shots and I survived.........I did what I had to for the baby. Lots of luck!!

I agree, people should not cut out carbs, candy, soda etc if that is the way they normally eat, in order to see if your body is able to handle the way you are eating on a daily basis.

Re: advice for 3hr glucose test
YOu can't beat the test. If you have GD you have GD.......
I suggest you DO NOT FAST unless specifically told to because fasting for long periods of time can lead to glucose spikes in the body.
Just eat and drink like you normally do!
Good Luck!

I took mine the day after Halloween so I watched for that reason. I normally do not down 5 trillion candy bars etc. so it would have been inaccurate if I didnt steer clear of those things.

Re: advice for 3hr glucose test
i wasnt asking how i could beat the test..
some ladies at work did say to cut back on the carbs and i wanted to see if that was true..
i went last saturday, so it was pretty dumb of me to have some halloween candy at home a few days before and a halloween party at work - im a third grade teacher - it was too tempting..
this is from that website recommended above from goobster:
If your physician determines that you should take the complete 3-?hour glucose tolerance test, you will be asked to follow some special instructions in preparation for the test. For three days before the test, eat a diet that contains at least 150 grams of carbohydrates each day. This can be accomplished by including one cup of pasta, two servings of fruit, four slices of bread, and three glasses of milk every day. For 10 to 14 hours before the test you should not eat and not drink anything but water. The test is usually done in the morning in your physician's office or in a laboratory.

ITA-if you do this you could be harming your baby. Just eat as you normally would. The placenta blocks the effectiveness of insulin in your body which results in GD for some people. The diet is just healthy eating. Good luck

Re: advice for 3hr glucose test
I didn't modify my diet the days before but the day of the test, I didn't eat breakfast. I went in at 7 am.
Good Luck! Take plenty of reading material!

I see what you are saying now about how it's not how you normally eat.

Re: advice for 3hr glucose test
I don't know what to tell you - each dr is different - My MF dr at columbia with DD had me carb load for the whole week before the test - where you eat normally but then add an additional amount of certain carbs everyday and then they had me fast before the test. But other people are told different things. Honestly GD is hormonal so eating or not eating won't make you pass or fail the test - although eating better is always good only b.c if you do fail you will have to eat a certain way anyway so it could never hurt to cut back on sweets and certain carbs regardless. Try sticking with the "better" less spiking carbs.
Don't stress about the 3 hour many people fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour. I failed the one hour miserably but passed the 3 with very good numbers so you never know.

Re: advice for 3hr glucose test
As someone who administers GTTs, please be sure to follow your dr's orders. I have never heard of MDs requesting patients to watch their diets a few days before, but thats not to say some dont. Just fast for 12 hours prior to the test, nothing but water.
ETA: I apologize that you don't know who I am. I saw the topic on the board and checked it because I know about the test.
