Am I being unreasonable ? or is this the norm ?
Ladies,
Am I being unreasonable ? or is this the norm ?
I am thinking of changing my OBGYN. It seems to be like a factory.
The nurse called me to tell me to make an appointment in 2 weeks for my first OB appointment. (Also, I never spoke with the dr about my U/S results...we saw a heartbeat)
I spoke with appointment people and the next appointment they had was in 4 weeks. (I would 11 weeks....since my radiologist told me I was about 7 weeks now)
I am concerned.. this is my first baby, I am over 35, I have fibroids... and I am not sure what to do at this point ! Shouldn't I go sooner than 4 weeks ? I had 3 U/S already b/c I had spotting to rule out ectopic and miscarriage.
I left a message to see if they could move me up since the nurse told me I should come in 2 weeks...the office called back and told me I could see a midwife....otherwise wait until my appt that i already had. I did not want to see a midwife for my first OB appointment !
I need your advice... opinions, experiences...
thank you.

Switch doctors. Or call back and demand an earlier appt. tell them you are high risk andyou must come in in 2 weeks not 4.

I didn't have my first appointment until I was 10 weeks. Alot of people told me this was normal. I guess it depends on the size of the practice. If you are worried don't wait though! You don't want to be stressing out for 4 weeks.
Congrats~!~!

I don't think you are at all. My friend was 39 with fibroids and was constantly at the doctor. I changed my ob/gyn also because I thought it was too much like a mill-is yours in Mineola?

Is there any way you could speak directly with the doctor? Sometimes, when you get the Dr. on the phone, they will squeeze you in. Or you could ask to be notified of any cancellations and take that appointment. If you are due to go back in 2 weeks, you should...no questions asked.

I would switch doctors - it's really essential to be with a doctor who takes your concerns seriously. Yes, it is the norm to have your first appointment at 10 weeks, but NOT for high-risk mommies.
After I had my m/c, I wasn't really considered high risk, but I was soooooo scared that my Dr. spoiled me silly and accomodated me in so many ways. He had me come in every week to draw blood to make sure my numbers were doubling and had extra ultrasounds scheduled, just to ease my mind. They were extras, and outside the norm, but that's why I love my Dr. - he cares about the patient and their emotional needs. I don't think I wouldn't have gotten through the first trimester with my sanity otherwise!

I agree with the previous posts... You need to be with a Dr. that you feel comfortable calling any time with anything... and that has compassion.. Try to see if there is an OB that is alone or with only a few people... Where do you live??

I was about 7 weeks for my first visit and I saw a midwife, but I am not high risk, and so yes I think u should switch Dr's. Your concerns should be addressed, not dismissed. good luck!

Re: Am I being unreasonable ? or is this the norm ?
I called back and spoke with the nurse who told me to come in 2 weeks. She said the dr said it was fine that I come in the next earliest appt..and that they like to see patients 7-10 weeks.... I explained that I will be at 11 weeks when I go with the appt I have ...
so now it's a different story..she's going to call me back on monday to figure something out.

If you are not comfortable change practices, but be sure to someone you are really comfortable with before doing the change. Also, I think insurance only pays for visits every 4 weeks during the 1st and 2nd trimesters. I think you should discuss all of your concerns with your MD and then call your insurance company and find out what will they cover considering your medical condition.
