"America is not the greatest country in the world"
Some of our recent discussions (guns, healthcare) have made me think of this amazing first scene from HBO's The Newroom.
I think it's such a powerful opening to the series and an amazing show. I'm considering changing my political affilation to "The Newsroom"
Thoughts? (you need to watch a bit for him to get into it and you can probably skip a minute or two)
ETA: In fact you can skip to minute 3 if you want.

I watched about two episodes of this show and couldn't stomach it.
I'm not saying America is perfect but what if it is not the greatest country in the world what is? Honestly... what country is better?

Really? Socialized medicine? Waiting 6 months for a doctor's appointment? These two countries are also among the highest marginal tax rates in the world. No thanks.

I'm sure others will chime in but this is such a huge misconception. I spent the first 23 years of my life in Canada and never once waited that long for a doctor's appointments. I find my wait times here are almost exactly the same as they were there.

But that's your opinion. Not saying its right or wrong. Just saying that other people think their country is the best.
That's why I don't get when people say America is the best. To that person yes but not to everyone.

Norway, Denmark, Germany
oh and before you bother, Norway has about a 50% tax rate, but they don't pay for school or healthcare or a host of other things that we have to figure out how to sqeeze out of our pitiful paychecks once we earn them.
I am not afraid of taxes. they don't scare me if I know I can take my kid to the doctor and send him to school without a worry or care in my life.

Agreed. 100%. The whole "We're number one!" shit REALLY limits us and makes it easy for people (i.e.: the government) to rest on their laurels. "We're the greatest country ever so we don't have to change anything!"

Re: "America is not the greatest country in the world"
our military is number 1. I give us that.
but we are LAST or almost LAST behind just about every other "great" nation in almost every other category. Like, by researched documented fact.
I just posted an article about how our rate of death in those under 50 is last behind 16 other industrialized nations.
how is that "the best" at anything?
we don't take care of our elderly, or at least we are trying our damnedest not to.
we don't take care of our families. we don't take care of our pregnant women or new mothers. PAKISTAN HAS A BETTER MATERNITY POLICY.
I mean I just cannot take this anymore. I love my country. my family has fought in every major battle this country has ever fought. and I am just SICK of being the washed up child star still thinking he's the shit.
WE ARE NOT THE SHIT ANYMORE.
we are just going to shit.

Re: "America is not the greatest country in the world"
It took me about 2 years to get my tonsilectemy approved my my insurance company. This was with PRIVATE insurance and after YEARS of documented repeated illness. Instead of believing my doctor, the insurance company sent me to THEIR doctor who said I did't have tonsils but also did a lot of testing which probably cost a pretty penny. In the interim they ended up paying for lots of doctor visits and antibiotics. It's not so easy to get treatment in this country either.
My mom is on a medication and she has a bad reaction to the generic. She has to pay full price, like $150 a month for the non generic form. This is with paid insurance, people

Scandinavian countries always win for the "happiest" people in the world. I would pay those kinds of tax rates too for guaranteed health care and education. Never even mind their maternity/family policies.
I haven't seen this speech, but I agree with the sentiment. If that makes me socialist, communist, etc. so be it.

Re: "America is not the greatest country in the world"
IMO, the US is not the greatest country in the world. I've lived in two other countries (Australia an d Germany, still in Germany), and, yes I pay high taxes, but you get so much more for your money.
I don't foresee myself ever moving back to the US...

I wouldn't mind living in Copenhagen, Denmark. It's listed as one of the happiest place in the world to live, The Danish government also takes a special interest in mothers and their children. Women typically get six to 12 months in paid maternity leave. Yes, the taxes are higher, but to me this would be worth it alone.

I have a friend who also grew up in Canada, and came here as an adult. She's been appalled by her experiences here and the fixation on insurance. She was there for her father through a terminal illness, and said they did not have to deal with insurance, worrying about money, etc, and he got excellent care.
Anyway, this fixation many Americans have with needing to be the "greatest" mystifies me. Really, who cares? I love my country and I am proud to be American, but I would never belittle someone from another country. Especially when other countries trounce us in terms of education, conditions for parenthood, health and happiness.
We are legends in our own minds.

Hrmm... we aren't perfect.
Neither is Germany or Norway or Denmark or any other place you can name.
I CHOOSE to live here.
I like it here.
Is there room for improvement? Of course.
But this is where I want to be. And.. oddly enough.. a lot of other people choose to be here too.

Re: "America is not the greatest country in the world"
I agree...and that superiority complex of "america is the best" really hasn't gotten us anywhere good.
I'm still not 100% sold on obamacare but I'm not 100% against it either bc I don't think anyone in need should be turned away...my concern is just with people who continue to reproduce at ridiculous rates, unable to provide and we all pay the price (yes I know it already happens...I just worry what happens if we enable it further)
But socialized medicine aside...look at our maternity leave...it's a disgrace. Our crime rate is crap too.
I love this country...make no bones about it...But I think we have ALOT of work ahead of us to get back to being "the best". There is nothing unpatriotic about recognizing areas that need attention and working to fix them.
