Re: "America is not the greatest country in the world"
I think people confuse "I love America" with "America is the greatest country in the world". You can love our country, be proud to live here, want to live here, enjoy living here, etc....without insulting every other country in the world by saying they're inferior to us. I love my house....is it the best house in the world? No...but it doesn't have to be....because it's mine and I love it! Just like America.

I watched about two episodes of this show and couldn't stomach it.
I'm not saying America is perfect but what if it is not the greatest country in the world what is? Honestly... what country is better?
Canada? England?
Really? Socialized medicine? Waiting 6 months for a doctor's appointment? These two countries are also among the highest marginal tax rates in the world. No thanks.
I'm sure others will chime in but this is such a huge misconception. I spent the first 23 years of my life in Canada and never once waited that long for a doctor's appointments. I find my wait times here are almost exactly the same as they were there.
My aunt's brother waited one year for an operation.
I waited 7 months to get a yearly gyno checkup. 7 months! Oh, and BTW, that wasn't even with a DOCTOR. It was with a PA. Wait for the doctor was 11 months.
I made an appt with an orthopedist today (thank you suzibee) and I almost fainted when she said the first appointment was February 1st. I thought it was going to be end of February or later!!!

I've been trying to get an appointment with my old gyn since last May. Haven't been able to. Here. In New York.

I 100% agree. Our country is disgraceful. And I know people in Canada and the UK and they don't mind paying the higher taxes for the life perks they receive. The US is run by a bunch of money hungry savages and I'm referring to both parties who really don't give a f*ck about the people.

ITA. I have seriously thought about moving to Canada. I'd much rather pay higher taxes for guaranteed medical coverage. Yes, socialized medicine. Why is socialism considered a bad thing? I'd rather the people take ownership and power rather than the top 1% and corporations as it is now in the US. Our country is a disgrace.

I think its a totally strange mentality to think that your country is the "greatest". What on earth is the criteria? Its such a silly, nonsensical question. Why is that even a debate/competition?
This planet is full of rich, diverse, interesting, flawed, cultures, what is the point of ranking them?

Hrmm... we aren't perfect.
Neither is Germany or Norway or Denmark or any other place you can name.
I CHOOSE to live here.
I like it here.
Is there room for improvement? Of course.
But this is where I want to be. And.. oddly enough.. a lot of other people choose to be here too.
I am a first generation American and I am proud to be one. My grandparents were proud and so were/are my parents. I am grateful everyday for the opportunities in this country. My family came from a country with socialized healthcare but not much else. They came with only the clothes on their backs and became successful citizens ( not many other countries allow you to become a naturalized citizen).
I believe we are a great country - we are not a disgrace. Are we the best? That is wholly subjective, but we are great. We are a land of innovators and bootstrappers. Google, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, some of the most life altering innovations in our lifetime come from this country. We are a land that is diverse; in race, religion, creed, background, geographic location. We are a metropolis, we are rural, we are suburban, we are black, Hispanic, white, catholic, Muslim, Jewish, doctors and machine workers. We do not always get along but when it all goes down we can agree on the fact the we are Americans.
We have beautiful tropical beaches, swamps filled with alligators, awe inspiring mountains and craters, deserts filled with red rock formations and cities filled with skyscrapers.
We are generous and kind. Not always, but most of the time. I see It every single day. People reaching out to others to aid them in times of need. Sandy, Newtown and even right here on LIF - whenever someone is suffering or needs help we pour out everything we have. This happens everyday, in every community in this country. We give to individuals and we give to greater causes. We give money and we give of our time.
That is who we are. We care. Maybe we are the best, maybe we aren't but we are great.

My father was Danish. He was a dual citizen and paid (I think it was 'crown tax'?) for a good part of his life. His parents were both born in Denmark to good, upper class families - but chose to come here. He had the option to go to Denmark and take us there at any time.. but he chose to stay in the US.
I do believe that despite our flaws, we still have the fastest rising rate of immigration in the world, am I incorrect about that?
In my company I work:
4 men from El Salvador 2 men from China 1 man from the Phillipines 2 men from Israel 1 man from India 1 man from Pakistan 1 woman from Argentina 1 woman from France 1 woman from Japan 1 man from Romania
All of them came to the US as adults. Most of them work here in a white collar capacity. The majority came within the last 10 years. They enjoy it here. They want to stay. They think it's great. They have families and homes and lives in their native countries.. but they choose here. I am thinking that has to say SOMETHING about the country as a whole, no?
And I know that it's a small sample.. but so many people come here and assimilate fairly easily. I guess I think that is pretty great.
As to "GREATEST".. well as PP said.. that is subjective, isn't it? I think the term "GREATEST" is a silly playground term anyway.
I am an American. I live in the United States of America and I am proud of that fact. We need work.. and I can acknowledge that.. but I still don't want to leave.

we have long long waits for operations too. know anyone on the liver transplant list that is not a cheater like Steve Jobs?
Very true. My Dad has been on a list for 2 years. They monitor his condition but it wouldn't matter, if he has another attack, he wouldn't make it without the new liver. He has waited for numerous operations with GREAT private insurance. As a matter of a fact, he has had to fight and wait weeks for scans that need to be done ASAP.

our military is number 1. I give us that.
but we are LAST or almost LAST behind just about every other "great" nation in almost every other category. Like, by researched documented fact.
I just posted an article about how our rate of death in those under 50 is last behind 16 other industrialized nations.
how is that "the best" at anything?
we don't take care of our elderly, or at least we are trying our damnedest not to.
we don't take care of our families. we don't take care of our pregnant women or new mothers. PAKISTAN HAS A BETTER MATERNITY POLICY.
I mean I just cannot take this anymore. I love my country. my family has fought in every major battle this country has ever fought. and I am just SICK of being the washed up child star still thinking he's the shit.
WE ARE NOT THE SHIT ANYMORE.
we are just going to shit.
Jess for President!!!

I think if we say the US is the greatest, not only is it incredibly ignorant. As a PP said, there are MANY beautiful cultures around the world. What makes ours "the best"? It also means that if we assume we're the best which I really think a lot of people do, it absolves us from looking outside for better ideas.

this is all true.
it still does not change the fact that we are declining. It's not romantic to say, but it's a fact. We are falling behind every other nation. We are fatter, unhealthier, education is faltering, we are dying younger, we have more people in poverty, and the worst part of all is that too many of us are so scared for themselves (and I am not saying that it's not with reason) that we are not running away from helping each other.
this country is not the same country it was even 20 years ago. I wouldn't have even considered leaving when Clinton was President either
this is MY country. I will be hot damned if I am "forced" to leave without a fight for what I think is right.
I don't want to fight or argue with anyone here. I don't think we should be squeezing each other for the very last penny.
But I would LOVE to see things change for the better. I would LOVE to see our tax code ACTUALLY BE WRITEN FAIRLY.
there are things that this country has that no one else does. But that does not mean that we can't take the good parts of other countries too to make it better.
We HAVE to make it better. B/c it IS only going to get worse.

actually I think the idea of fighting for what is right and changing your country for the better is WHOLLY and COMPLETELY AMERICAN.
and the one true idea that makes our country great.
we SHOULD be saying WTF. that is what our founding fathers did. that is what they would expect us to do.
the beauty of it is, they made it so we have other recourses besides Muskets, Militia, General Washington, and Paul Revere to get it done.

I agree with Jess (shocker). It's like when people say that criticizing the government is anti-american (that was a more popular line during the Bush era and Iraq war). It's not. It's actually what makes America great. #1 it's free speech but moreso, this was the FIRST country to claim her own independence from a mother country. The first country, the only one to have EVER broken out and formed a new nation on new ideals. This is a country that is all about questioning the old, looking toward the new and striving for a better tomorrow. I really believe that is THE core American value. There are many incredible countries in Europe that also have freedom of speech, freedom of the press, opportunity, but they are so steeped in the past. Their culture is much older and they revere that past. I think one uniquely American trait is that we've always been about a NEW culture that's always changing and that we're always looking to the future. At least that's how I like to see it

You are right Jess.. but one thing the founding fathers didn't do is disparage their land. They did not say "Man.. America sucks we need to emulate X country."
They said "This stuff isn't great right now.. HOW CAN WE MAKE IT BETTER." They didn't focus and whine about how other people and countries were better.. they just wanted to fix THEIR OWN.
Not too many people (from what I see) are interested in coming up with actual ideas to make it better. They are more interested in sucker punching anyone who doesn't agree with their ideology. They are more interested in deepening the chasms - calling people who feel one way "WRONG" or "STUPID" or "UNPATRIOTIC" or "COMMUNIST" or "FACIST" or "HEARTLESS" or whatever comment you want to throw in about INSERT POLITICAL AFFILIATION HERE.
I stand by my feeling that America is a GREAT country. That doesn't mean I can't see the decay, the decline, the need for improvement in a lot of areas... but it means that I think it is WORTH improving. I think the bones are good and the people are good.
I see it like this.. we are sitting around in our house talking about how the neighbors property is so much nicer and prettier and their house is bigger and their pool is cleaner. And instead of DOING SOMETHING with our house, we are more content to blame each other. It's because Obama doesn't wash the windows or because Reagan did a ****** job building the dormer or because Congress doesn't know how to wash dishes or because the republicans hate progress or the liberals have no sense of fiscal responsibility.
I have said it before.. until the parties and by extension the PEOPLE can stop pointing fingers and patting themselves on the back as being "right" we aren't going to improve because we won't take ACTION. And that's what the Founding Fathers were about.. ACTION.

I feel blessed to have been born, raised and to make my home in the United States. But when I hear politicians (or anyone really) say that we are the greatest country in the world, I cringe. It is the height of arrogance to claim our country is better than anyone else's.
And it is not un-American in the least to feel this way. What it IS is understanding that we are not the center of the world, the only country that has things that make it wonderful or a nice place to make your home. We are a great nation, but other nations are great too.
As Americans we are not perfect, and many, many things are clearly not ideal with our government and society. Our government was formed with the intention that we can change and grow as the world changes. It is our responsibility to question, to share our ideas and to make changes happen when necessary.

I have the greatest husband in the world. I have the best kids in the universe. I have said that before and I believe it with all my heart. My husband doesn't give me roses everyday or sing me love songs in the kitchen and sometimes he is grumpy and says sh*t that makes me want to smack him. My kids aren't uber geniuses and they have nasty temper tantrums and don't always do their chores when they are told.. but I still think they are the best. I wouldn't trade them for ANYTHING.
Does that mean I'm a terrible arrogant asshole? Or is it just a way for me to express how blessed and happy I feel to have what I have?
