annoyed...neighbor put up new fence
are their any laws about putting the nicer side out and the ugly side in? meaning that our neigbor got a new fence and put the ugly side on our side so their whole property is enclosed with the nice side facing in.

I think you can have the nice side in unless it's surrounding a pool, then you have to have the nice side out so the cross-bars, if any, don't offer a way to climb over the fence.

I was always certain this was the case but at my friends bbq the neighbor did the opposite and did nice side facing into their yard. Old school way was nicer side facing neighbors.

I don't think there are any "laws" per se, other than unwritten rules of courtesy. rather cheeky if you ask me to put the nice side in and not out. Sorry you have to deal with that! If it were me, I'd probably make a comment saying I thought it was odd they did that to the neighbor and then I'd plant morning glories all along the fence so it over took it!

I think the nice side is supposed to face out. You may be able to check with the town. You could always do the same thing & put up another fence w/the nice side facing in. Is it worth it to start a fight with your neighbor over a fence?

We just had a fence installed. We learned that there is only a law (in TOH) about having the nice side out when you have a pool-so it is not easy for kids to climb over. Other than that-you can do what you want.
But it is an unwritten-common courtesy rule to put the nice side to your neighbors.

ahhh i did not realize that about the pool. we have one, although it is closed. totally not worth starting a fight; they are actually lovely people. i was just curious.

I have to disagree. Fences are expensive and why should the nice side face the neighbors vs. the people paying for it?? I can see the reason if someone has a pool - I really didn't know the law since I have PVC - but the person paying has every right to enjoy the nicer side IMO.

When we put our fence up we automatically put the nice side towards our neighbors. We did this because we did not want anyone climbing into our yard via the fence. So technically it is common courtesy and common sense.

I think it depends on the town. When we were putting in our fence, I called the town of Smithtown and they said the nice side has to face the neighbors. They did not mention a pool. We ended up doing PVC.

We put a 4 foot fence to hide the perpetual garbage our neighbors had in their driveway - a 40 foot pile of firewood, overflowing recycling cans, abandoned bikes and toys and trash piles that would be put at the end of the driveway 3 - 4 days before pick-up day. Under those circumstances I decided we should have the nice side since they clearly didn't care what the view was along the property line.

To me, it just looks "wrong" when the nice side is facing your own yard. Plus, I wouldn't want a way for someone to climb into my yard. I wouldn't worry too much. If they're nice people, then I wouldn't care one bit.

Can you tell the town that "Well, *I* think the nice side is the side with the cross-beams on it, so I'll give that side to the neighbors...."  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... 
When we moved in, we had fence all around the back yard. For most of it, the "nice" side was facing the neighbors. I have no idea who put the fence in, but it was falling apart, so I just hung new fence on our side of the posts, so now we both have the nice side facing us....

Thank you! whoever pays for it get's the nice side if there is no pool is in question.
who says that the neighbor gets the nice side. if that's the case, i'll let mine fall down and just wait until THEY put up a new one for me to get the nice side...

OK, I have lived on LI for 1 year now-what I wrote is based on what was discussed when we were putting up our fence. We put up a 2-sided fence so it didn't really matter. The statement is based on discussions we had with fence companies and friends who have lived for a long time in our area of LI. It seems like other people on the board think this too, so I guess it depends on your neighborhood? In our town there is no law-except in the case of a pool-so do whatever you want.

The only law I've heard is nice side facing neighbors when you have a pool.
Our neighbors recently put up new fencing and put the nice side towards us because they have a pool. I felt bad that they paid for this fence and don't get the benefit of the nice side and told my neighbor that. I even offered her some money for the fence but she said it's required by law so she wouldn't take anything from me.
I guess there are 2 ways to look at- it's nice to see the nice side against your yard, but let's say your on a corner house, would you really have the nice side facing in and the ugly side facing the outside of your property? I wouldn't think so because that would look silly.

At my Parents house- neighbors put a fence- nice side on theirs and ugly facing my Parents' yard.
Easy fix- plant big trees in front of the fence. Gives the yard a nice look with extra privacy and you don't see the ugly fence.
