Another contraction question..

How long do they typically last- from beginning to end?

I'm never sure if it's what I'm feeling...I feel mostly menstrual cramp type stuff. It tends to happen first thing in the morning when I get up....or if I just get up from sitting a while...maybe it is just cramps now that I think about it.Chat Icon

I'm also wondering if my back is contracting too...I was miserable aaaalllll morning. My plan was to do some light shopping...couldn't get out of bed. Back just hurt ALL over...and my whole body kind of followed.

Re: Another contraction question..

According to what we learned in lamaze a contraction can feel like cramps and you can also feel them in your back. The length of the contraction can vary. Try timing them.

Make sure you take it easy Tara! Chat Icon

Re: Another contraction question..

tara - i've had a hard time with this question too....they always ask - how long are the contractions and i'm like - how on earth do i know?

do i consider the MINOR pain the start of one and the FINAL no more pain the end? what happens if the pain doesn't stop? that's what happened on wednesday to me - it was like a stereo....always on...at a low volume and someone kept TURNING IT UP...

you don't really have to 'worry' about the cramping until they 'stop you in your tracks' or you can't 'breathe through it'....that's what they told me.

see, I dunno though...my sister had no idea she was having contractions because they just felt like menstrual cramps...she said they never felt worse than that for her. I feel like the only way I'll ever know (unless it's really painful) is if I time them. So far I'm okay in that department!

And I'm resting like crazy today...I've been a total lazy slob all day! Brett has been taking good care of me, made lunch and is making dinner and even got my laundry out of the dryer for me.Chat Icon

I hate feeling so blahhhh...I wanted to get out today and be productive!! Later on we will start doing stuff in the nursery though- minor stuff, and assembling some things. I hope I feel more like myself tomorrow!!

Thanks everyone!Chat Icon

I totally knew them when I felt the "real' ones. I never really had braxton hicks until a few days before I went into labor and I couldnt really time them.

The real ones---I knew exactly when they started and stopped. It is so hard to explain but I woke up out of a deep sleep and said, oh a contraction and loooked at the clock. When I finally decided to get out of bed I went online and could totally tell when one was starting, peaking, stopping and used the online contraction timer.

Re: Another contraction question..

I had back labor and had no clue for a while. I would get these sharp cramps in my back sporadically and no matter how much DH tried to massage them, they wouldn't go away. At some point, I couldn't walk or talk through the back aches and that's when I found out I was in active labor. Eventually, my contractions felt like a tightening in my upper stomach and I could barely catch my breath. But, they originally started as sharp cramps in my lower back. I think my biggest clue was that I couldn't walk or talk through the pain.
