Any Moms out there that do not vaccinate their children?
I have been considering not giving shots to my kids anymore, and after reading a book that gives the details of what each shot is for, the possible reactions, etc...I am 90% sure that I won't be getting them shots anymore. There are however a few that I am still considering. I guess I am just looking for some feedback from moms who don't give shots or at least not all of them. Thanks!

I did give my kids shots up until 12 months. They have not had the MMR yet at 20 months. i am undecided as to whether I will do it or not...What book did you read?
ETA: I refused the hep B, rotavirus, chicken pox and flu

Re: Any Moms out there that do not vaccinate their children?
watch Frontline's Vaccine Wars
I was considering withholding some vaccines. When I was choosing peds, I had 2 pages worth of questions on vaccines a lone.
But, after educating myself, the reactions are nothing compared to death. If the vaccine is to prevent death from disease I have no hesitation.
Other vaccine prevent diseases that do not necessarily cause death. chicken pox, stomach virus, etc. I actually decided to okay these too after a lot of consideration.
eta: we do only 2 shots at a time, as our ped recommened

We are doing some shots but skipping others or defering them to right before school.
No matter what he never gets more than 2 vaccinations per appointment, not 2 shots but rather no more than 2 vaccainations. reason is so if he has a reaction we can better identify the issues behind it.

im not a mom thats against vaccines, so i know my opinion isn't requested...but i just wanted to quote what Shana said. vaccinations are not worse than death.

Re: Any Moms out there that do not vaccinate their children?
I pick and choose. I didn't do Hep B or rotovirus.
but I did all of the deadly diseases and will do the MMR.
more than anything, when they were speaking about...ugh dammit I cannot remember the term, but basically saying that by there is a certain immunity that OTHERS get from all of us keeping vaccinated that touched me.
I would feel terribly if someone who can't get vaccinated got sick and died b/c I chose not to vaccinate.
to me, the benefits of certain vaccines outweigh the risks.

I agree, and I know many pediatricians (including family members) who will not treat children whose parents refuse shots (in general; not the flu shot and optional vaccines).
No matter how well-educated we can try to be, I would thoroughly discuss this with a real doctor. the doctors who advocate withholding shots are in the minority, and IMO for good reason. Yes, there are some reactions to shots, generally in very few cases, but the results of not giving shots can be deadly. I couldn't live with myself if my son died because I made the decision not to vaccinate him fully.

Re: Any Moms out there that do not vaccinate their children?
See, this is what has me concerned. The one that has me most at a loss is the Meningitis one, I think they call it Hib vaccine. The book states that that one has been known to cause severe adverse reactions, and also that breastfeeding greatly reduces the chance of getting it, and that it is more commong in children under the age of 18 months who attend daycare. I plan on breastfeeding for at least a full year, and my new baby will not go to daycare......but I know that meningitis is serious and potentially fatal. But the reactions from the vaccine can also be serious and there have been cases of fatalitites.......I just don't know what to do.....I would feel awful if I didn't get my baby this shot and she got meningitis, but I would feel equally as bad if she did get the vaccine and she had a serious reaction.

Yes that is true. Both my children have needed their vaccination paperwork for school and camp.

I don't skip any but the flu shot
I do limit the number she gets per visit. I'll be honest its a brutal battle. Plus we have one or two more she had to 'catch up' on here in TX because they are specific to this area.

Re: Any Moms out there that do not vaccinate their children?
i keep thinking about that Law and Order SVU episode when the mother didn't vaccinate her son and took him to a playground. he got a disease (cant remember which one) and gave it to an infant who was not old enough for the vaccination and died.
whenever i hear about vaccination debates i think of that episode. yeah i know its tv and not real, but it could happen. there is more of a risk not to give the vaccine then to give it.
again...just my 2 cents.

When I was doing research on the topic I remember reading a story where non-vaccinated children who contracted a disease (I forget if it was mumps or measles) unintenionally infected children while in the waiting room at the doctors office. One of these children was a baby who had not received the vaccine yet and later died. So it's not that far fetched.

I'm not sure...I live in California and I have heard from a few nurses that if you say it's for religious reasons you can legally not need all shots....not sure if that is accurate or not.

Please dont take this the wrong way, but not vaccinating your child at all is not the smartest idea. Especially when it comes to the Hib vaccine as you mentioned above.
You can go back and read all my old posts. I have been in several heated debates about how we over vaccinate our children and the possible side effects. I have my children on an alternative vaccine schedule which I would be happy to share with you BUT please dont make the mistake of not vaccinating your children at all. Besides the fact they will not be able to attend school, camp or lots of children activities.
I have done tons of research, spoke with my pediatrician at length, read several books and still feel given the possible side effects, vaccination (although on an alternative schedule) is still the best thing for my children.
ETA: And please don't be naive enough to think just because you are BF your child they are not susceptible to certain diseases. There is no way to know what your immunity is or the immunity you are passing on to them. I have several friends who EBF and their kids were sick more than mine.
Yes the chemicals in the vaccines are scary which is why I seperate the vaccines. But you cannot protect your children from everything...there are chemicals all around us that we dont know about. Chemicals sprayed on our foods. Chemicals in the soap we wash our hands with.

Re: Any Moms out there that do not vaccinate their children?
It's scary but I chose to vaccinate following a modified vaccine schedule which I can share with you.
The problem is this.... the ONLY way to enroll children in school without vaccines is because of religious beliefs and if in fact you can qualify for the exemption, you are NOT ALLOWED to pick and choose, it's all or nothing so for me I chose all. Good luck, it is the decision that you have to make and you have to live with and I am sure you will make the right one

How many infants a year die of Hep B?
That is really an adult disease, it should be an adult shot not one for newborns.
My child is not in day care so I'm not as concerned about rotovirus. he also isn't near other children so I'm not concerened about him making others ill.
I think each parent needs to do wht is right for them and their family and not be bullied by the cdc and their buddies in pharma.

just lurking over from the pregnancy board...you are able to send your child to school if they dont have all of their shots if you state it's b/c of religious beliefs. but you will need letters from your church/temple, etc. it's a lot of red tape but it is doable if it's something you strongly believe in. i do know someone that has done this.

Honestly by the time they go to school at the age of 5/6 there is no reason to not vaccinate your kids. Their older and their immune systems are strong enough to handle them, better than an infant would be anyway.
Unfortunately many dont like all the shots our kids get, myself included, but if people dont vaccinate at all the diseases that were erradicated long ago will only come back.

Before I had DD I worked for a school district where this was a very hot topic. I can tell you, at least in NY, once your child has had even 1 shot, your odds of successfully arguing against vaccinations are pretty slim. Also, it is not as simple as walking in and stating "I am not vaccinating my child due to religious reasons." It can be a long battle and your child may not be allowed in school until it is resolved either way. In the end, if the school says your child does need to be vaccinated, also understand that you now have to catch up on 5-6 years worth of shots in a very, very short time.
(Obviously this is NY and this is my experience, but I would think it would be the same across the board).

You can claim religious exemption.
My BIL and SIL do this. Their kids are not vaccinated and it drives me crazy. 2 of them are school aged, the other is my DD's age (17 months) and home with my SIL.
I'm more lax about my DD being around my nephews now that she HAS had all but her Chicken Pox vaccination. However, now that I'm about to have DC#2, I'm freaking over allowing my nephews near the baby.
