I am pretty sure if you plan to send them to school, they will need certain vaccinations
just lurking over from the pregnancy board...you are able to send your child to school if they dont have all of their shots if you state it's b/c of religious beliefs. but you will need letters from your church/temple, etc. it's a lot of red tape but it is doable if it's something you strongly believe in. i do know someone that has done this.
As far as I know, you can't pick and choose which vaccines to give and then claim religious exemption. If you had vaccinated and then completely stop vaccinating your DC based on a change in beliefs, you may be able to claim religious exemption.

Re: Any Moms out there that do not vaccinate their children?
Breastfeeding your baby is a wonderful gift for your LO. You are passing great immunities and giving your baby the best you can give, bu it's not a DISEASE protection and breastmilk certainly isn't life saving milk.
With that being said, my ped doesn't give more than 2 vaccines a month. I'm all for whatever I think is going to keep her ALIVE. Will I give her the chicken pox? Probably not, it's not a life threatening disease. But I will MOST CERTAINLY give her the MMR and other important vaccines because the overall outcome outweighs the risks.

another poster mentioned that diseases are returning - this is true - whooping cough (aka pertussis) is a prime example though I don't think that one's deadly. I also remember reading something recently about polio, which is pretty deadly, making a comeback in some parts of the world. the world is a pretty small place when you think about it and it won't be long until these diseases reappear in the US. I'm not trying to bully you at all, but I become very scared for myself and my family when I read about people not getting vaccines - it puts everyone else at risk as well your child. I'm not going to tell you every vaccine is necessary or that the schedule is the way it should be - I'm not an expert - but do think about the deadly diseases and the other children and adults your child will be around before you finalize your decision.

I pick and choose which to give my kids. My kids will not receive chicken pox and I am still up in the air about the MMR. Nina never received the rotovirus vaccines but Luke did.

Could someone post their modified vaccine schedule? DD is only 3 months and goes to the ped next week for what I presume is more vaccinations...I feel so completely uneducated about this I am ashamed

Re: Any Moms out there that do not vaccinate their children?
IMO............the benefits of vaccinations FAR outweigh the risks and I feel more comfortable knowing that my child is protected especially in this day and age of parents who don't vaccinate and the influx of foreigners into this country. I have cousins who insisted on no vaccinations for their kids...........how nice that they are protected from infectious disease yet their kids are open to contracting any number of potentially fatally illnesses. They let their son walk around with pertussis for months because god forbid the kid get the vaccine or even meds to treat the condition after the fact. It's so negligent of them IMO.
If people keep making the decision to not vaccinate their kids because they think they know better than the medical community at large we are going to start seeing outbreaks of diseases that we literally eradicated years ago. And I personally am disturbed at the idea that my child who is and will be fully vaccinated may have to be in a classroom with children who have had nothing thereby exposing my child to possible infection.
Sorry, but I just do not agree with not vaccinating your child. I don't care what any book or website says..................there are risks with everything in life but when it comes to potentially life threatening or debilitating diseases which are easily preventable the benefits of vaccinating FAR outweigh any risk.

I trust my doctor and we follow his recommendations re vaccinations. I am not an MD and I don't think I can learn enough about it in a book to fully understand all of the medical and public health implications. The only exception was we did not choose to give DS the swine flu shot- he isn't in day care and we felt it was unnecessary.

But, after educating myself, the reactions are nothing compared to death. If the vaccine is to prevent death from disease I have no hesitation.
im not a mom thats against vaccines, so i know my opinion isn't requested...but i just wanted to quote what Shana said. vaccinations are not worse than death.
How many infants a year die of Hep B?
That is really an adult disease, it should be an adult shot not one for newborns.
My child is not in day care so I'm not as concerned about rotovirus. he also isn't near other children so I'm not concerened about him making others ill.
I think each parent needs to do wht is right for them and their family and not be bullied by the cdc and their buddies in pharma.
We were told by our neonatologist that the hep B vaccine was a big experiment to see if they could eradicate hep B by vaccinating a "captive audience" eg. our babies. We refused it. My kids are 20 months and have not gotten the MMR and we will probably eventually give it, but wait a while. My kids do not go to daycare although we would like to do PT preschool so we may need to make this decision sonner than we'd like.

This is a little misleading. Pertussis has been spread through ADULTS not children. That is why they have a marketing campaign to get yourself vaccinated if you are having or have a baby.

I agree. My niece got pertussis at 4 even though she was vaccinated. The doctor said it is because fewer people are vaccinating so the "cocooning effect" is lessening. It was the scariest things I have ever seen. She would turn blue because she couldnt breathe when she had an episode. And those episodes occurred for 6 mos.

The last two years there has been a large outbreak of Pertussis in my school district- mainly in the elementary school and middle school so it is spreading through children as well.
I think everyone has to make the desicion that they feel most comfortable with. For me, I vaccinate my child because I am a teacher and around kids all day. I would hate to contract something and bring it home to DS.

My nephew has been in and out of the hospital numerous time with pertussis, he has Down Syndrome which for some reason makes the vaccine less effective.

i just wanted to add here that when my 9 year old was 2, she got rotovirus and it was BAD. She was not in daycare, no playgroups, i did not even have friends with kids at the time. She was soooo sick, she layed in that hospital bed hooked up to iv like a lifeless ragdoll. it was so sad. To this day it is the sickest she has ever been. BTW: they had no vaccine when she was little.

I was wondering how you would get around this? You also need them for day care.
I'm not sure...I live in California and I have heard from a few nurses that if you say it's for religious reasons you can legally not need all shots....not sure if that is accurate or not.
I could be wrong, but I think that once you've done some vaccines, you can't claim religious exception.

Thank you, I think its INSANE to not vaccinate because of all the reasons you listed above...it worries me that people out there think they would know more than the medical community by reading one book and then putting others at risk. When people from 3rd world countries move here, they get vaccinated because of what they've seen around them...people w/polio, etc...if we lived in a country of such poverty, no one would question getting vaccinated.

Personally I think it is naive to think that it is ok to not vaccinate because your child is not in daycare, around other children etc. All it takes is for you to be on the subway, touch a doorknob, be in the supermarket, next to the person on line at Dunkin Donuts, and you could be exposed and your children could be exposed.

OMG, I couldn't even read all the stories on this site... so sad.
I for one do vaccinate my DC according to the schedule my ped gives us.
ETA: Even with vaccinations, some things are not preventable. My DD was hospitalized last December when she was 2 weeks old with RSV induced bronchiolitus. It was the scariest thing I've been through.
Even though that could not be prevented, I feel as though I am dramatically reducing my DC risks of getting terrible diseases by giving them their vaccinations.

I have so far and plan to giving him his shots that are a part of the 12 month schedule. After that I am refusing/delaying certain shots (ie. MMR). I also do not give my son more than 1 shot in a day.

This was very sad. I am not anti vaccine. I just don't understand why these vaccines have to have heavy metals in them and other chemicals. I, for one, would pay extra for a "green" vaccine
