were doing every vaccine except for the rotavirus one. Which is not necessary for our babies since they are not in a day care setting and are watched by family.

for me and DH the possible side effects of the vaccine are better than our children actually getting the virus that they are protecting against.

I did hold off on my older DD's chicken pox vaccine until she needed it to go to school.

IMO............the benefits of vaccinations FAR outweigh the risks and I feel more comfortable knowing that my child is protected especially in this day and age of parents who don't vaccinate and the influx of foreigners into this country. I have cousins who insisted on no vaccinations for their kids...........how nice that they are protected from infectious disease yet their kids are open to contracting any number of potentially fatally illnesses. They let their son walk around with pertussis for months because god forbid the kid get the vaccine or even meds to treat the condition after the fact. It's so negligent of them IMO.

If people keep making the decision to not vaccinate their kids because they think they know better than the medical community at large we are going to start seeing outbreaks of diseases that we literally eradicated years ago. And I personally am disturbed at the idea that my child who is and will be fully vaccinated may have to be in a classroom with children who have had nothing thereby exposing my child to possible infection.

Sorry, but I just do not agree with not vaccinating your child. I don't care what any book or website says..................there are risks with everything in life but when it comes to potentially life threatening or debilitating diseases which are easily preventable the benefits of vaccinating FAR outweigh any risk.

Thank you, I think its INSANE to not vaccinate because of all the reasons you listed above...it worries me that people out there think they would know more than the medical community by reading one book and then putting others at risk. When people from 3rd world countries move here, they get vaccinated because of what they've seen around them...people w/polio, etc...if we lived in a country of such poverty, no one would question getting vaccinated.

I usually don't chime in on vaccine threads but this is how I truely feel 100%.

It frightens me to think how many people are choosing to not vaccinate their children b/c of all these books that have come out. If you choose to spread the schedule out, I don't care, if you choose to skip the chicken pox, I don't care but to not vaccinate at all. . .that's scary.

If I can't trust my doctor, who am I ever going to trust? This is not to say, don't educate yourself about the vaccines but I have to have faith in my doctor.

I will respond to the actual "technicality" of not vaccinating and the logistic of it.

There are ways around it. But it's not as easy as people claim it to be!

You could have a religious waiver but you should know that:

- Some PEDs will not accept you if they don't agree to it. So look for a PED office that if open to no vaccination.

- While some school districts might be more flexible, some schools might not. And they can flat out refuse to accept a child unvaccinated. You might have to defend your case in front of the school board.

- They are sick people/kids in schools, hotels, planes, attraction parks all the time. And not just a cold. A little girl had the measles 2 years ago in the school DS is in. So just be very aware of the risk of exposure for your own child.

- You usually cannot pick and choose which shot to give. It's all or nothing! So if you claim religious exempt, you cannot vaccinate your child EVER!

Just wanted to share with you that one of my friend's from high school had rotovirus run through her family. Both her girls got rotovirus, then her and her DH got it as well. She is a SAHM and her girls did not go to school and they both ended up getting rotovirus. She said it was the single most horrific thing she has ever been through and she wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I completely respect your decision to not get it for your DC, but I wanted to let you know that just because your DC doesn't go to school, doesn't mean they aren't suseptible to getting it. Chat Icon

I did give my kids shots up until 12 months. They have not had the MMR yet at 20 months. i am undecided as to whether I will do it or not...What book did you read?

ETA: I refused the hep B, rotavirus, chicken pox and flu

It's called The Vaccine Guide.

I read this book. Just to get some insight even though I knew I would be vaccinating. I felt like I was reading propoganda. There was no research backing up anything he was saying. As soon as he said that vaccines cause autism I put it down. It was a scare tactic with nothing backing it up.... Any book can say anything. That is what free speech is about....

Re: Any Moms out there that do not vaccinate their children?

I did not read all the responses but I have posted on this topic before, yes vaccines are FULL of things I don't think most people would want shot in to their child but they do GREAT things for nearly every person...that said, yes there ARE going to be children that have adverse reactions and I'm fairly confident ANY doctor will tell you that there are risks as there are with surgery, etc....some will be serious, and not JUST a potential autism link....as someone very, very versed on this subject as a long family history of vaccine reactions and issues I do vaccinate my DS but on a VERY delayed schedule. I know some moms that don't vacciante at all as well though...

I do agree with the posters that it can be very challenging at least in NYS if you don't vacciante at all. You will need to submit a religious exemption (or medical --but you must prove that to a doctor) and religious exemptions CAN be disputed with school districts...some districts will fight you, others will not even think twice about it....there was a bill being pushed in the Assembly in NYS for a philisophical exemption (which is allowed in several states) but it has stalled and is not approved--that allows you to jsut say you have a philisophical concern and you will not need to vacciante--for religious it can be questioned and not approved. You *could*run the risk of not being able to get your child into school and then if you want to you will have to play catch up QUICK which kind of defeats the purpose as you'd be getting multiple shots in a short time frame....after much thought, debate, conversations with our doctor, research, etc...we went with a delayed schedule that we created ourself, we didn't start until DS was about 1.5 years old---there are risk associated with doing that but giiven the histroy/situation we were ok with those risks.... we chose the least reactive shots first and then we tried to eliminate the need for multiple shots by waiting to a certain age (I.E. after 18 months a child only needs 1 HIB shot rather than 3 if given before 18 months--and they are still protected. We also did not do rotavirus as my pediatrician didn't give it at the time...I really think it's great that more people are educated and asking questions on tihs topic

another poster mentioned that diseases are returning - this is true - whooping cough (aka pertussis) is a prime example though I don't think that one's deadly. I also remember reading something recently about polio, which is pretty deadly, making a comeback in some parts of the world. the world is a pretty small place when you think about it and it won't be long until these diseases reappear in the US. I'm not trying to bully you at all, but I become very scared for myself and my family when I read about people not getting vaccines - it puts everyone else at risk as well your child. I'm not going to tell you every vaccine is necessary or that the schedule is the way it should be - I'm not an expert - but do think about the deadly diseases and the other children and adults your child will be around before you finalize your decision.

This is a little misleading. Pertussis has been spread through ADULTS not children. That is why they have a marketing campaign to get yourself vaccinated if you are having or have a baby.

Oh, I think adults should be vaccinated too but there have been outbreaks among children so I think we should all do what we can to protect ourselves and our kids. I got a booster recently myself.

ETA: to me, whooping cough is an Oregon Trail disease - something that I'm not supposed to experience because it was eradicated - if people are getting it now because adults aren't getting the boosters they need, that's pretty scary and unvaccinated children can contract this from adults too. I don't really think it matters whether these diseases are spread by adults or children - I think both should be getting vaccinated. If there are people who want to wait some, that's not unreasonable, but there are a lot of risks to everyone when people stop vaccinating.

Re: Any Moms out there that do not vaccinate their children?

Its a tough decision and I have to say I wouldn't have faith in what any doctor told me 100% you are at least trying to educate yourself in different practices. But in the end is it worth to go against the "social norm" so that your child will not be introduced to some toxins? Yes shots contain some toxins but as parents you need to determine what is more important to you illness or some toxic exposure.

IT is your choice and you can only do what you think is best for your child.

I do not agree with the chicken pox vaccine or the flu vaccine and all these vaccines that i think if your child would be exposed to would actually help them more then hurt them (IMO) but for the major ones I think sometimes its best to go with the social norm just so your child benefits from the extra perks of out of school activities and more importantly for the protection against these diseases that do kill.
